Hey Dakka, I'm at that stage again where I can't decide on an army. I was set on Militarum Tempestus for a little bit, because their figs are so nice and I loved the idea of a human elite army. But alas, the lack of choice in their army ended with my boredom.

I want to know what you guys think are the most fun races to play. Fun to build, paint, play, which have the most interesting special rules, etc. I'm really bored of SPEHSS MAHREENS! Cos it's all my friends play. So I'm looking for a different race who are fun, and have nice models.

Cheers all

If you like Tempestus, consider allies perhaps?

There are a lot of options open to you as a Imperium player, as well as FW options (given the available $$$).

Otherwise AdMech seems to be pretty interesting, complex and different.

It’s a very subjective question.

What you like the looks of is very important. You are going to be spending a lot of time and money building and painting them, so it should be something you enjoy.

Picking an army who’s fluff you like is also key. It’s the hook that ties you into the background.

I’d suggest you read through the fluff part of the rulebook and see if anything calls to you.

If you want an elite human army, and don’t want MT or SM that kinda limits your options. Sisters of Battle might work for you. Or switch to the xenos side, and get Tau or Eldar.

IMO Tau is fun to paint, Orks are fun to play.

Dark eldar have fantastic models to paint but suffer from to much finecast crap but conversions are easily made to save you from some of that. They are also fun to play hard but fun.

I've heard that Dark Eldar have a similar play style to the MT. So I may check them out. I've always liked the warrior figs, although I'm pretty against their messed up fluff haha

Miltarium Tempestus isn't meant to be a standalone army, I would highly recommend pairing it with Inquisition to fill in the gaps. Henchmens can fulfill a variety of roles and they also bring in some alternative transports that are better than the Taurus Prime you're saddled with (both get access to Valks but Valks are just plain awesome regardless).

Daemons are quite fun by virtue of the rules that employ randomness. "Wargear" is rolling on tables before the game starts to see what wargear you get. At the start of each of your Shooting phases you roll 2d6 and consult a table to see what happens, with some results impacting you negatively. You always get a save against anything but the worst Destroyer table result. Unless your model has an armor save (Daemon Prince w/ armor or a "wargear" result that gives you armor), Grav weaponry needs 6+ to wound you. Everything Deep Strikes if you so wish. You have four distinct play styles to choose from or mix, and the range of models provides great flexibility on how to paint them, especially the Tzeentch related units. And if you lose combat there's that ever so slim chance all your recently dead models come right back... or your entire force poofs into the aether!

You also have Psychic powers available to you if you so desire, some gnarly vehicles with tough-as-nails profiles, MCs and FMCs... quite a wide variety of options at your disposal. Certainly much more than Militarum Tempestus can offer. The general approach to combat is different but I think you could cobble together a combination of Chaos god forces that fit your particular play style.

Deamons do seem fun - always been a bit of a fan of Tzeench and Khorn.

I've never thought about using Inquisition to aid the MT, or in general looked at their units or dex. What sort of bonuses do they grant? I'm assuming if I included them with my MT, I'd have to paint them all red and black

Just look at every post ever about orks and you'll find that while they are lower tear power, they are one of the funnest to play and to play against. They Will ENTERTAIN You And You Fellow players.

Craftworld Eldar are fun because of variety. Thanks to all the different aspect warriors, your army can have a variety of colour schemes and play styles. You can make a melee eldar army, a shooty eldar army, a psychic eldar army...blah blah blah. It's also an army where you can pick any unit, and have a reasonable hope of it being useful in some situation. Even the 'bad' units are still pretty good. They don't have many poor models either!

Just be careful with the power level of the army you build. If the people you play with are not the uber competitive types, try to steer away from mass jetbikes, wraithguard and wraithknights. Eldar are not an enjoyable army if no one will play you.

Operation Pitchfork ring any bells?

Going for a Human faction that not everyone has with fun special rules? Maybe the Admech/Skitarii might do something for you, plus you have the added bonus of being able to ally Tempestus with them

Daemons. Pure daemons and all of their randomness and neat little bag of tricks can make every game different.

An honor guard centric Space Marine list.

Fun assaults, absolute fun time to model and paint (only ultramarines have HG, and only 4 at that.) go with old marks of armour and new ones, combine and create an awesome complement of men who will mince anything with a 3+ save with relic blades and a 2+ with power axes.

Then throw in the land raider spearhead and watch as everything you touch dies,

Orks are one of the most fun armies to play. And not just fun for you, but also fun for your opponent.

They have some very surprising close combat prowess and will often catch a lot of your opponents off guard with how quickly they are forced in to the assault phase.

But you will never be turned down for a game when you are telling them you are running Orks. And their models have a lot of cool detail, There is a lot of variation amongst the models, even the infantry. And if you like to make your own custom models or steal armor or weapons from other armies, then this is the army to go with.

Harlequins might be worth considering. They're less similar to MT than Dark Eldar are, but they are a sort of more Dark Eldar version of Dark Eldar. Their list of options is a bit on the limited side, though, and it seems like you were going for shooting rather than assault?

Probably the nicest models in the game now, too.

For me it's any top tier army currently. Not because they're top tier but because they all have the same things making them top tier, which is a ton of mobility , survivability, and just tricks as a whole. I'd say Tau is my favourite of them as they're extra mobile, but yea if you look at it they all have the ability to move around like crazy.

I'll pluck you like a flower.

Could just fluff it that the Inquisitor forced that regiment or w/e into service. The Inquisition provides psychic powers, tanky dudes with stormshields and uh... servo skulls, I think, not sure if they'd help MT's a lot.

If you want to stick with elite-y humans, go with Elysians Drop Troops from FW, you can even keep your MT's

Daemons, loads of variety, in terms of weird troops. Also the random rewards and semi-random powers change how each unit functions a little, so games with the same list are a little different each time. You can also change your army composition to an extent by summoning different troops (but not as much as most people think).

Not to mention you can try fantasy too.
A big part of why I play daemons (I do like the fluff too) is that I can simply do more things with the same models.

I've recently been looking into the new Cadian Battle Group which seems like there could be a few fun lists to make. I've made a couple of lists:

http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/678479.page

The other armies I'm considering (mostly because I already have a little collection of both) would be Tau or Death Korps.

They really are expensive... But they're pretty boss in both fluff and looks.

Orks for me, though I'll admit I've never been a great player with them since it's hard to break my marine mindset.

I remember back in fifth a buddy and I traded armies so he played my space wolves and I played his orks. What followed can only be described as one of the worst games either of us play tactically. He was way to reckless with the marines losing bodies left and right, but I played way to conservative with the orks.

Orks are probably the most fun for everyone involved as they die by the bucket load win or lose. Lots of tactics and decently viable units can make each Ork army play a bit different from each other but very few of the Ork units are outright OP and must have (Tankbustas being the real allstar of the codex). They aren't top tier by any means but they aren't so hopelessly outclassed that they can't krump some gitz (although certain extra shooty gitz give the boyz in green some trouble).

Speaking of shooty gitz the Tau can be a very fun army to play but you have to be careful of not blowing the opponent out of the water (which is rather unfun for the blown up person). Tau are very combined arms and unit synergy in nature which is great fun to play. Tactics such as deep striking Crisis Suits, Fire Warriors in Devilfish, outflanking Kroot, etc can be a lot of fun and keeps the Tau from falling into the boring trap of Gunline Tau which just sits and shoots the enemy's face off. Also I think "MechWarrior Tau" is rather boring when spamming nothing but suits (particularly Riptides and Stormsurges) as it loses a lot of the unity synergy charm that the Tau can utilize.

Love me some Orks vs Space Wolves, probably one of the better matchups in 40k right up there with old school Tau vs Guard.

I dunno, it's probably my area but I've never seen an Ork player have...fun. they just place their models on the table and then remove them and leave vs the majority of players they are up against...for my own part I just feel guilty playing against them
