There might be some older threads on this, but thought I'd check with people here about what 40k podcasts they are listening to. I tried going through Google results and found a lot of podcasts that were intermittent or defunct, so I figured the community might know best which podcasts are alive and kicking.

[UPDATE] For anyone searching in the future, here are the suggestions I got as of Jan 2016.

(Omitting any details about quality/content/frequency)

I listen to Forge the Narrative. They new episodes frequently. I enjoy it. I would say they lean a little to more competitive game play. But there is enough hobby stuff to go around.

The Right

Forge the Narrative
TFG Radio
The Independent Characters (Now stopped, but lots of timeless casts you could go back and listen too)

And in the interests of saving your time.

Avoid 'Masters of the Forge' I've painfully endured 3 episodes and although they seem like good guys, its just too much like amateur hour. Poor quality recording and poorly planned/scripted (Just like 2 dudes talking, which is what it is... not my thing)

Roll to Seize is one that these guys do once a month, more laid back and humor based.

The Independent Characters is the best 40k podcast. They have an extensive back library of episodes which were made to be as timeless as possible.

They shut down last year but recently announced they will be back in March.

Their Show of Force (Faction specific reviews of rules, fluff, mini support etc) and FW book review episodes are their best in my opinion.

I actually thoroughly enjoy the Masters of the Forge. They've become one of my big two to listen to (alongside the always-awesome Preferred Enemies) recently. They definitely have a different way of doing things from some of the other podcasts out there, but I really enjoy them. They also include lots of homebrewed content, which is great if you enjoy that sort of thing (and I do).

Wolfkin is a lot of fun, but they seem to be putting out episodes less frequently.

Independent Characters are fantastic, and I look forward to seeing them reborn.

ATTENTION
. Psychic tests are unfluffy. Your longing for AV is understandable but misguided. Your chapter doesn't need a separate codex. Doctrines should go away. Being a "troop" means nothing. This has been a cranky service announcement. You may now resume your regularly scheduled arguing.

I listen too:

Forge the Narrative
The Long War
Roll to Seize
Mob Rules Mobcast
Heroic 28s
Imperial Truth

Imperial Truth is a 30k podcast, covers a lot of lore, the hobby, gaming, and has Black Library author interviews.

EDIT: doh!

Re-read the OP and realized there was no need for a 'what frank listened to' post haha.

What is alive and kicking? Not too sure since I stopped listening to tabletop based podcasts with the exception of Life After the Cover save but once The Independent Characters comes back I'd probably start listening to them again.

Three ones that I listen(ed) to. I like these guys because they're focused and positive, quite a few other podcasts out there often turn into super-long and agitating gripe sessions:

Life After the Cover Save - super random/off topic, and definitely NSFW, but always a good laugh.

Forge the Narrative - good strategy stuff

Independent Characters - good archive of episodes covering gameplay, hobby, and fluff

Singles is good but it covers a lot of games and is pretty short. So in terms of a 40k podcast it's not bad, but it's not exactly something I'd listen to if I really want something very 40k.

Now their battle reports, those are super awesome for 40k stuff.

I'll pluck you like a flower.

Shorter is better. The show is usually about an hour. That is long enough.

I actually thoroughly enjoy the Masters of the Forge. They've become one of my big two to listen to (alongside the always-awesome Preferred Enemies) recently. They definitely have a different way of doing things from some of the other podcasts out there, but I really enjoy them. Same here as far as Masters of the Forge go. I haven't listened to all of their episodes, but the five or six I have caught had perfectly fine sound quality and they always do some fun things. They are definitely more narrative focused and they cover the lore quite a bit. If you're after straight competitive gaming I would skip this one, but outside of that it's a fun podcast in my opinion.

11th Company (which is on hiatus as mentioned above) was my favorite by far for a very long time. They cover a lot of the tournament scene but in a way that makes it fun to listen to. It felt like one of the higher end shows.

I actually also had fun with some of the older 40K radio episodes. I know Romeo and crew have caught flak over the years, but they had some really great interviews and I've not seen a show manage to capture that feeling of sitting around the house/shop with your buddies and just BSing about random 40k stuff all day.

Independent Characters is pretty cool and I've heard it's supposedly going to start up again soon (just something I heard on another podcast - I do not have inside info lol). As someone else mentioned, their "Show of Force" show were top notch.

Partial Arc - Probably my current favorite. Very fun, fast paced and easy to listen to. My only complaint is that I wish it was a little longer or possibly that it could happen more than once a month. That's just me being selfish though. I really enjoy that one.

A lot of people also mention Life After the Cover Save in these conversations. Someone above mentioned how it's kind of random. While that's true, it also bears mentioning that it has almost nothing to do with 40k most of the time. The best description I've heard of it is that it's not so much a 40k podcast as it is a general comedy podcast that acknowledges that 40k exists. If you go into it with that mindset it can be a fun listen. If you go in expecting a true "40k podcast" you will hate it.

Edit: I just googled ablutions and apparently it does not including dropping a duece. I should have looked it up early sorry for any confusion. - Baldsmug

Wait, what were we talking about again? Did I ever tell you about the time I gave you five bees for a quarter? That's what you'd say in those days, "give me five bees for a quarter", is what you'd say in those days. And you'd go down to the D&D shop, with an onion in your belt, 'cause that was the style of the time. So there I was in the D&D shop..."
