I'm keen to try out KoW, but with models I already have (for now). I play Tzeentch daemons with a bunch of daemonettes allies.

So I can use daemon princes (fiend), horrors (flamers), deamonettes (succubi) and flamers (efreet), right?

I noticed that the base sizes for lesser abyssals etc. are 20mm? Seeing as I can just put a number of models on the appropriate tray (or magnetic sheet) that's fine, but isn't that different to the rest of the game? Also 75mm for fiends!?

The important question is getting a list, I can't find it. Do I have to buy something particular or just wait a bit?

That is the free abyssal rule list. The full force list is available in the printed rules (the full or gamers version) which you can either buy seperately or should come free in any of the army bundles.

The list is called "Forces of the Abyss" and is included at the back of the 2nd edition rulebook, which you can purchase in either hard copy of PDF. You can also build the army for free using the builder at easyarmy.com

The game is effectively element based, so the number of models on a unit base or movement tray doesn't really matter that much. Mantic have some guidelines for it, but if you're using 12 models on a 25mm base to represent a "regiment of 20 models" that's explicitly and officially listed as fine in their FAQs (can't recall if it's in the rulebook or not). All of my human and elf infantry are based on 25mm rounds instead of 20mm squares and it's 100% legal for example.

I see, makes sense for the free stuff to be more basic.

Thanks

It's worth pointing out that the Night-Stalkers army is very demon-y and is also worth considering.

But yeah, the FAQ (see here: http://www.manticgames.com/free-rules.html ) specifically says that using fewer models on a tray of the appropriate size is fine. They give some guidelines for minimum count, but honestly as long as it looks good I'd say it doesn't matter that much.

Id like to point out that the list SliverMK2 linked is from *last* edition, so its pretty much defunct (everything got more expensive with 2nd ed - the basic 80 points KoM shieldwall was pushed to 100 and everything else was balanced around that)

But yeah. You could use the Forces of the Abyss for your demons, or you could use the nightstalkers list, which is more of an "eldritch demons from beyond" type of list. Use kow2.easyarmy.com for now, and get the rulebook later (gamers edition should be fine, unless you want the fluff). If you like the look of the nightstalkers list, its in the uncharted empires supplement.

There is not this idea.

I actually think the Nightstalkers fit the "feel" of GW demons a bit more.

That PDF is from the last edition and is horrendously out of date.

There are up to date versions on both Easy Army and on Battle Scribe.

In Swastakowey's thead on Reviews & Tactics I wrote a bit about my experiences with playing an Abyssal army for the first time. (Short version - they are a whole lot shootier than I had expected, and really, really a lot of fun to play.)

They do not play a whole lot like Chaos Daemons in Warhammer, but closer to Tzeench than any other Chaos Power.

The Auld Grump

*EDIT* They are a well balanced army... and against a squishy army like Ratkin, the Flamebearers do a heck of a lot of damage.

The reason I bought rules and became a real wargamer was because I wanted a properly thought out structure to govern the action instead of just making things up as I went along.

Thanks.

Any idea of if or when there will be a abyssal starter list for 2nd edition?

You don't need one.

You can go to http://kow2.easyarmy.com/ or get Battlescribe on your phone/tablet/computer and use the updated files to make a KoW list.
