Certainly miles ahead of the shovel ware being made with the IP now.
GW used to care about the quality of games based on their IP, now it's just about getting every penny they can no matter how bad a game is.
I'd dispute that.
Space Marine was very solid (if not mind blowing), Mordheim was good fun, both Bloodbowls were good (if a big buggy early on) upcoming TWW and BFG look to be very much on course for good things.
Warhammer Quest on mobile I thoroughly enjoyed, Space Hulk and Ascension were solid (if again not mind blowing).
I dont think quality has gone downhill since DoW, (yes there have been some tacky and useless games) but overall the standard has been above average to very good.
GW hasnt found a studio to do a AAA game yet (whatever AAA means these days). However they have shipped the IP out to several companies who have released quite enjoyable games. Will you remember them as all time classics? Probably not. But name me an all time classic of late anyways in gaming.....
Space Marine was probably the closest in terms of getting the Atmosphere of 40k right. The Guards felt right, with their mix of troops freaking the feth out and their Sergeant holding her damn ground and commanding her troops. The Orks felt scary because of their numbers and savageness, the Space Marines felt like the elite strike force they're meant to be, there was tension when the Daemons came in. Overall, I thought it was a solid game. I guess originally it was supposed to be a trilogy until THQ folded, which makes me sad because after the ending of the game, I was really interested to see what they would've done next.

You are aware that there's been like 47 games for various platforms (mostly mobile/Facebook) under the 40k IP released in the past two years, right? GW has been handing the IP out like candy. It's not just triple-A studios buying it anymore.
I wasnt debating the number of games out there.
I was debating the other posters ascertion that the quality of said games was crap.
Overall it is not crap. Yes out of 47 games you're going to get one or two flops but even the limited selection I outlined above have been fair to good quality.
As to AAA games, all Im saying is a GW related AAA game has not been released of yet imo. Whether that is by hook, crook or just bad luck we dont know. But I havent seen one that I'd compare to say the likes of GTA, Skyrim, Fallout series, Halo series etc etc.
And no, Im not saying those games were perfect either, just that they had a lot more financial, developmental, investment and marketing done on them. Compared to say Space Hulk 1 or the original Bloodbowl.

I'd honestly like to see more non-RTS, non-isometric games in the setting. If I want to see the 40k universe from the perspective of passing seagull, I'll go to my FLGS and play a pick-up match. I want more games like Space Marine where I get to see the action up close and personal. I'm keeping an eye on Eternal Crusade, but persistent online worlds are starting to feel tired to me.

Horror would maybe be a thing in the game Space Hulk deathwing, with Nids and such, currently there is a game in the works called WH40K (obviously) Eternal Crusade. It is going to eventually be a Massive battle simulator similar to Planetside 2 with a large map against several different factions with battles going on in certain parts of the map and others are just calm areas with defenders waiting for the next attack, they plan on implementing 'Nids as a PVE aspect with factions such as SM CSM Eldar Orks IG and Tau eventually being added, Eldar and Orks are currently in the progress of being added, the game is in alpha but shows ENORMOUS potential, if you have played Planetside 2 you see it just like me, if you havent its free to play on Steam, i think it will eventually be Free to play but currently you have to pay 40 dollars to gain early access but i think its a game worth investing in, its incredibly awesome when you rush through the battlefield heavy bolters firing at you and chaos marines shouting to bring you down as you rush through the thick of the battlefield your fellow battle brothers supressing in return to try to help, as you rush towards your fallen battle brother as you realize the battle will surely bring death either way and you help him to his feet and yell your battlecry "For the Emperor!" And you rush forward firing your bolters screaming for victory. ill leave you with that

Not sure, the Wiki article doesn't say whether a game launched or didn't, it simply separated the "canceled" from the "announced".
ETA: Slated for June 2016, pushed from end of 2015.

I grew up on RTS games - Age of Empires, StarCraft, Rise of Nations, you name it. Somehow never got into C&C though; I just wasn't a fan of the resourcing system. I still maintain DoW is the best RTS to have come out this millennium, though. It's what got me into 40k in the first place, too. I recall the campaign mission in the original where you first encounter the Eldar - I thought that was the closest to horror I'd ever seen RTS come, and in general DoW really did a good job presenting the hopelessness of the universe in addition to having great gameplay that rewarded more than just click speed.
What I'd really like to see would be a horror game in the vein of System Shock 2 / Dead Space / whatever - you're a Guardsman on an Imperial Navy ship when the Gellar Field flickers for a second and demons pour in. You get action, a picture of how dangerous the universe is, and GW could even throw in a handful of Chaos Marines to show off how cool Space Marines are. Then you've got a Chaos Dreadnought as a boss fight, and maybe a Sister of Battle supporting character who yells at you to go faster throughout the entire game.

way back in the 90's there was a turn based rpg type 40k game. Space marines vs. chaos. I can't remember the title.. I mean it was the 90's so don't expect the epic graphics of today. But frankly when I compare that to what's out there now, it was probably the most faithful representation of 40k tabletop campaign. Turn based, movement distances, weapon ranges. It took tactics to win through that. I really don't think RTS is the right fit for 40K. It should be a turn based game.

Skyrim-like open world moddability.
Mass effect narrative and choices, or Witcher 3.
Space Marines gameplay with a bit more HOOMPHS, maybe mixed with Mass effect gameplay.
More then 1 Faction campaign, SM/CSm, Eldar; Ork, Tau, Cron, IG, each with their own gameplay styles.
SM would be like a classic RPG Paladin with power armor and bolter, would have to make difficult decisions, save the Hive city people, but miss on the opportunity to end the Chaos cult?
Eldar would be pretty much the same, but more like an Archmage gameplay, the decisions that you will have to take will have much more deeper consequences that any other faction.
CSM/Ork, you're evil and/or Bad ass, you're free to do what you want, but the game is harder sinch little to no one wants to have anything to do with you, except for Cultists/other orks.
Tau will give you the perspective of an outsider, someone neutral, use of high tech gear and even pilot your own Exo armor at some point.
Cron acts like a huge threat, ancient doom that awakens to see their tombs be scavenged by mortals and tries to repell/kill them, can use secret paths that no one knows of to go around.
IG would give you command of an IG squad, a veteran squad comprised of members that no one wanted, its up to you to make the most of what you've got and use each of them strengths and skills to achieve your assignement around the world.

I'd really love a POE/WL2 type game based around FFGs dark heresy . A really old school WRPG, but taking advantage of modern advances. That would be awesome. I don't think it would be impossible task either, if you license dark heresy from FFG, a lot of the systems could be based on the rules (I prefer the original, but 2 defiantly has some good stuff), and a lot of the lore is already written by FFG, assuming it's set in the Calixis Sector. Plus, buttloads of weapons, armour, ect in the expansions. The Rogue Trader RPG would be a cool basis too.

Surprised so little mention of Space Hulk. Back in its day, it was a very clever translation of the board game for the computer. It's also very different from the mass battle games everyone seems to love (DoW).
I dread the coming of Dawn of War III - Its likely you'll get Space Marines and Orcs with the base game, everything else will be DLC, buggy, and there will be no single-player campaign. It will be all multiplayer maps (blech!).
