Okay guys. In the Chaos Codex in the terminator listing, it says "any" terminator may replace his combi bolter and power weapon for 7 points. And in the same listing for the Champion, it says the champ can take from the terminator weapons section of the wargear list. It's 22 points over there. Pretty absurd points difference, especially considering a termy champ isn't any different from regular terminators statistically. So where do I calculate his points?

Names are important. If the "Terminator" upgrade is 7 points, it only applies to models with the name "Terminator". Sargeant types often have different wargear options and sometimes pay different amounts for the same option.

Look at the Unit Composition:

Unit Composition: 2 Chaos Terminators, 1 Terminator Champion

The options for Chaos Terminators are for Chaos Terminators, while the options for the Terminator Champion are for the Terminator Champion. The option to take a Chaos Icon which is available to "...one model in the unit..." may be taken by either a Terminator or the Champion.

I guess. Sounds ridiculous, champs have the same stats as his suad mates, no idea why I have to pay over triple the amount of points. Thank you for the reply.

The Terminator Champion is a Character, so not the exact same profile.

That's true. I mean, I guess it's because I can challenge and kill people one on one then.

The Terminator Champ also has the Champion of Chaos Rule, so in theory he stands to get a lot more benefits out of the lightning claws as the game progresses.

In practice though, yeah he's pretty much just another Terminator.

Nope. Standard two attacks.

His actual stat line is identical to that of a normal Chaos Termie. It's just the different name and two rules that sets him apart (as well as the options).

Is the unit type (Character) one of those?

More of an army list question, but related to the topic, what set up do people recommend for terminator champions, specifically for melee orientated terminators?

A single specialist weapon, replace the combi weapon with a second power weapon or replace both weapons with a pair of specialist weapons?

I usually prefer Mark of Nurgle above all else, because +1 toughness helps out regardless of the situation. Mark of Tzeentch works too, since it also improves their survivability, but much less so than Mark of Nurgle (MoT basically only activates when you're hit by AP2 weapons, while MoN protects you regardless of which save you use)

For the other marks, Mark of Khorne is slightly weaker because it only provides more attacks in the first round of combat, but also gives you access to the Icon of Wrath, which lets you get a more reliable charge in and Furious Charge (which can help out on the strength department). Mark of Slaanesh helps out if you decide to go full-claws, since Initiative 5 beats the majority of Initiative 4 models out there. Icon of Excess also helps with the durability, as a FnP after your terminator armor will definitely make you a hell of a lot harder to kill (although whether or not this is better than a MoT or a MoN will be dependent on the situation).
