So aside from the fact that it will take 3 turns to charge (turn 1 summoned by DS = Flying, turn 2 you land, turn 3 you get to charge), what variant of BT does Possession summon?

Possession says to refer to Codex: Deamons for the rules for summoning units. The problem is there is no longer a "BloodThirster" entry since Curse of the Wulfen is out, which says the 3 BT variants REPLACE the BT entry. I know some would say you only get the BT of Unfettered Fury, since that variant is identical to the original entry, but there is no basis for that. One could just as easily make a case for the BT of Insensate Rage. Both are "BT's" and both replace the BT entry in the codex

Has anyone tried to summon D-Thirster?

I would probably just summon the old thirster since that was the original intent of the rule (as, back then, the other thirsters didn't exist). However GW would probably tell you that you can summon any kind, to encourage sales of the new thirster box (if you can have some options, why not get all three?)

As of last weekend the old Blood DThirster no longer exists in the latest Chaos Daemon codex. Unfortunately GW removed the Blood Thirster from the 500 limited copies of the mini Chaos Daemon codex but hasn't updated their digital codexes or provided errata in a new FAQ. It now references the Curse of the Wulfen dataslates which are a reprint of the White Dwarf rules for the new 3 variants.

You can see what I'm referencing here:

If there is a rule split that has no clear RAW answer, I always lean towards the least powerful interpretation. I would play it like it used to be and take the normal Thirster

I think if we mass-email GW enough for new FAQs we might finally get them to get off their asses.

Then again they probably have a "mass delete without reading" button installed in their Customer Service line. At least for the Rules Query "department".

I guess the point I was trying to get at is "what is a normal Thirster?" Many of us, including myself, have played long enough to know what the "original" Thirster was, but what about someone who just picked up a Codex and Curse of the Wulfen for the first time? How would they know which to use?

I don't really know the differences between the three bloodthirsters, but if there are really are three and you summon one of them., then it would seem to me that you roll a d3 and see which one you get. At least until GW comes out with some sort of rectification for this issue if they ever do.
