Just curious, has anyone started a conversion to use 40k armies in 30k rules?

It seems like it wouldn't be too hard. Mostly just shifting a few units around, inventing some rites of war etc etc..

It seems like 30k has a stronger inherent balance, significantly less power creep and clutter, some smoother running rules. (better graviton instead of grav, no atsknf, very little fearless)

If nobody has seen this project undertaken yet, would anyone be interested in it existing?

These are my opinions. This is how I feel. Others may feel differently. This needs to be stated for some reason.

It'd be all fun and games, until someone implemented Eldar.

On a more serious note, lacking all those Xenos factions makes it a lot easier to balance.

I wouldn't mind seeing a 30k Eldar list, but suggesting that to some 30k players may present a very telling reaction...

(Although a 30k list would be mostly Corsairs, as the CWE and DE cultures in 40k were in the process of maturing. Corsairs looks to be more like what we would see in 30k.)

The miniwargaming Youtube channel has done some interesting battle reports with xenos armies in 30k. They used Tyranids (since the 'Nids hadn't actually entered the galaxy yet, they were representing some sort of insectoid race) and Necrons (non-Decurion) whose tomb world awoke early. The Salamanders just thought they were some sort of rogue AI left over from the Dark Age of Technology. The games were surprisingly close.

2000 Khorne Bloodbound (Skullfiend Tribe- Aqshy)
1000 Tzeentch Arcanites (Pyrofane Cult - Hysh) in progress
2000 Slaves to Darkness (Ravagers)

Sorry, you guys have a misinterpretation of what I am suggesting. I don't want to see xenos races taking place in the 30k time period.

I'm talking about adjusting 40k armies as they are in 40k to use 30k mechanics. Rites of war, no formations, no decurions, low restrictions etc etc.

It seems like a lot of the interesting options/balance revolves around how the armies have been built around the those core mechanics. So... Why not play 40k using the superior 30k format?

Because its the 30k armies that make that format good, not the format itself. 30k armies are properly balanced to fight each other well.

Simply limiting 40k armies to no formations and 25% LoWs won't change 40k's terrible army balance

He means redisigning them into the format that 30k armies use. Points cost for min squads, larger max squads, RoW, support troops, troop-like elites, ect. Honestly, it might work, depends on who does it.

This.

A lot of the options and stat lines and everything for 40k can just be slid right over. Some little tweaks here or there because there are clearly options that need them. But increase unit sizes, Make additional models cost less so there is less MSU or at least incentive to do otherwise. More upgrades with a flat cost to the unit and less cost per model (again incentive to boost a unit instead of taking multiple min sized one.) Restricting people to the FOC's used in 30k to rebalance how units are selected. Rites of war that make different units into mandatory compulsory troops.

Some of the "support" codex's could be made into "Agents of". Harlequins as "Agents of the Eldar" that could be used by DE or CW Eldar.

I don't know. It seems like the 30k mechanics would not take THAT much work to adjust for everybody. Yes, work. The unit size/costs would certainly be some work. But it could be a lot of fun.

Some armies would be harder then others. I like the idea of no atsknf and very few units with fearless so that moral plays a much larger role. So Nids would need some major adjustments or else their army wide fearless would become pretty crazy. But yeah...

30ks structure seems like a kind of 8th edition where the game has just been refined into a much more smoothly running game. All the basic mechanics are there. So why not?
