I wouldn't blame TLOS of sight or any one rule. GW killed it with multiple cuts.

Random charge distance
no assault out of reserves
no assault out of a stationary vehicle
overwatch
taking causalities from the front.

all this combined makes assault a joke for most units.

Assault is dead because of scatterbikes and HYMP among other things.

I don't believe assault is dead, once you are in you can really do some damage, unfortunately getting in is can be very rough, if you don't get wiped out trying to get in often you are crippled. I do alright with my assault armies(which is what i prefer to play) however its much more risk vs reward between assault and shooting. Sometimes things work out for me sometimes they don't, there has been many times my army has gotten crippled before they ever get in because a shooing army, gets 2 or so rounds of shooting +overwatch before i can get into combat. Once in I think the weapons do alright, but Assault doesn't have a ton of good rules for closing the gap right now. But no assault is not dead.

What you described sounds pretty much like assault being dead to me.

They aren't actually saying assault is completely dead, it's kind of an exaggeration, but not much of one. Obviously assault does occur time to time.

What they're actually saying is shorthand for "You can't realistically win most games against a good army on the back of assault units unless they are some of the few assault units in the game that are so ridiculously broken and beyond most assault units that they actually function correctly at their job."

It's much faster to just say assault is dead, and plenty of people like me will pick up on the meaning.

exactly, there was a day and a time and a place where commanders and assault units were much more relevant to the game and they could put in work, but the power level of shooting has gotten out of control, at no point is it ever favorable to be a CC unit over a shooting unit unless your on the receiving end of a charge.

I wouldn't know about wraithlord but of course daemon princes, one of the only good things in the CSM codex.
