Having picked up a load of guard, I'm looking around for something to put these mountains of men into, as well as a few tanks. I looked a bit at battle foam and it seems nice, but I was really impressed with the KR "Kaiser 2" style, a bag that, with the foam I chose, fit 8 vehicles, 100 men, a valkyrie and some heavy weapons teams.

My main questions are: how hard is it to modify their foam? I need to fit 3 bullgryn in and was hoping I could just cut out some excess space for it.

What's their quality like? Is the foam similar to the stuff in the Citadel GW cases? Are the bags durable?

Overall it's $180 I think, which I'm willing to invest if it means I'll be set on room for awhile, was just wondering if their stuff was quality and if there is anything of similar quality for less.

They're great.

The foam is soft and conforms to the minis so often doesn't need modifying but can be easily cut.

It's also much easier to expand as a system because you add more card cases and then select the ones you need to transport and throw them into your padded case.

I'm up to 30 multicases now.

I’ve got a Kaiser 3, and 7 KRU worth of foam. It’s a softer foam, a little softer then my old GW case. My GW case is the 3 trays of 4x9 minis in red foam, and probably pushing 20 years old, they might have changed since then. I’ve had no problems with quality on the KR, but I do tend to take care of my stuff and am a light user. If I have any complaints, it’s the poor pocket layout on the Kaiser 3, and the fact that it’s quite heavy when loaded. Of course, I’ve got more lead in my collection then most. The Kaiser 2 actually looks like it has more useful space, despite being a smaller bag, and should be lighter.

I’ve not tried to modify the foam. After all, half the point of getting custom trays is so you don’t have to! But when I was cutting out the expansion bits for things like sponsons and my wave serpent, a sharp hobby knife and a little tension was all it took. So if you need to hack things up, you should be able to do so easily. I might look into getting a tray of their pluck foam rather then knifing up a regular tray though. Or a tray with big slots. I have a half width, half hight 4xRhino tray that I will often use to transport odd shaped things. Just use scraps of foam to nestle things in the larger space.

KR I think is the happy middle ground of the case world. It’s less expensive then battlefoam, and doesn’t have all the customization options they do. I also prefer the soft foam philosophy. There are other, cheaper, options, but they are generally just troop slots and pluck foam. I’m obviously biased now, but when I was doing my research on getting new cases, I picked KR for a number of good reasons, and have been happy with it.

I have one, not yet used by evidently great quality and looks to be more than capable of doing whatever job I need of it. Mine is the cardboard one so I imagine any ones more durable will be doubly worth it.

My main reason for wanting to modify the foam is that I don't want to buy a tray just for ogryn (I only have 3), plus I'm worried that standards for CCS won't fit without minor modification.

With KR’s squishy foam, you can have bits hanging out of their slots and not worry too much about them. This depends a lot on the model. For things like back banners on my marine sarges, I’ve been OK. My actual standard bearer I find another spot for. But if you wanted to cut out a wall to fit a tall mini in, I don’t think it would be an issue.

How big are the Ogryns? Terminator sided? Dreadnoughts? My concern here is that you need a tray deep enough to hold them. So you probably need something at least 1/2 a KRU deep. Not sure if any of the other trays you are looking at would have that depth/space to modify.

Somewhere between terminator and centurion devastator I'd reckon, since I don't have any of the latter to compare them to. If the slots in the KR are the same size as the standard Citadel cases I can probably use 1 and a half slots per model like I do with my terminators.
