FLUFF-

Chapter Relics
Everburning Brand - After the destruction of the Fire Hawks’ homeworld in the Age of Apostasy, it is said that one of the chief Armourers of Watch Fortress Erioch, a Fire Hawk himself, went mad with grief and would not leave his forge, until at last, even his superhuman constitution failed him, and the strain of exhaustion and hunger slew him. The Power Sword he forged known as the Everburning Brand burns with the mad rage of its maker, believed to be the provenance of this tragic event. The Brand’s power field is incredibly potent, but dangerously unstable, and the blade within the field has been shattered in several battles, only to be painstakingly reforged.

RULE-

Str +2, Apr 2, Master Crafted, Gives 4++

The Shattered blade- Any fail of 1 to hit in CC after all rerolls, the sword breaks and its blade ruined. It is now St +0 AP4 with no abilities.

I think you should make it an AP3 flamer with torrent.

Steve steveson- To be clear, I'd sell you all out for a bottle of scotch and a mid priced hooker.

Why ap3? This thing is everyburning. I figured AP 2 was good for it. - 50 points for the sword.

50 is WAY too many for something that can become useless. 30 sounds...okay at best.

The issue I am seeing is that there's a lot of fat to be trimmed from your weapon. Let's take the 4++. It seems good, but the problem is that the characters using this are likely going to have an Iron Halo already, which is a 4++. It is largely redundant.

I'd say if you cut the 4++ and price the sword around 35 points, you're pretty in the ballpark.

Not the case. While its more like that a miss will be a 1, you are still much less likely to miss so are overall less likely to break.

lel no.
You roll two dice. What's the likelihood one will be a 1?
You roll four dice. What's the likelihood one will be a 1?

Edit:

To be absolutely clear, a model's WS has nothing to do with how likely this weapon is to break. A WS 2 and WS8 model will break it the exact same number of times.
However, the number of attacks you make DRAMATICALLY increases the chances of losing it.

Exactly. I want it to be strong but a good chance of it breaking at some point in the battle. It has a habit of doing so.... I def think the 4++ is going to stay. Drop it down to 40 points.

The 4 attacks scenario: say 2 1's are rolled. The model has lost its weapon!

The 4 attacks scenario: say one 1 and one 2 is rolled. The matster craft rerolls the 1. If its anything BUT a 1, it doesnt break.

Its a naturally risky weapon, but its AP 2 +2 Str and gives a 4++ fpr 40 points. Its a sweet brand.

But for almost everyone who uses the sword, the 4++ is entirely pointless. Lemme break it down.

For Space Marines, there are 5 types of character who can take relics; Chapter Master, Captain, Chaplain, Librarian and Techmarine.

The Chapter Master and Captain each have Iron Halos as a stock piece of wargear. This gives them a 4++.

The Chaplain has a Rosarius as a stock piece of wargear. This also gives him a 4++.

The only models who would get any potential benefit from the save inherent in the sword are the Librarian and Techmarine. Which is fine enough, but do you really think it is a good choice to give the sword to them and have them mixing it up in melee? You've created an interesting weapon with some decent rules, but it just needs some fat trimmed from it.

Edit: And also, there's those things called Storm Shields floating around available for almost all Marine characters. Because if you're making a melee focused Marine, the shield is a must, further reducing the relevance of the sword's 4++.

The reference of a flamer with an extremely similar name went right over your head.

You see =] The person who made this brand was a weaponsmith, and a damned good one at that. It is made for and by a techmarine it seems and I think its the best option is to let a techy use it.

He doesnt get a save, and he never swings in CC. hah Maybe i should make a rule that a tech marine can only weild it bc he will be the only one to know how the pieces fit? hah

Also... i got the flamer torrent comment. just dont care for flamers on swords. It just doesnt make much sense for this fluff. But celestines does. Or maybe if this was an inquisitor weapon or something
