So, what's so great about it? Does it offer any other viable tactics rather than flyrant spam?

Battlescribe derp, showed Princelings as troops. I'll rework. Might have to remove Mawloc.

Are you allowed to use a single sheet from this rule set? Or is it like an "all or nothing" kind of formation. For example, could someone use Patriarch as an HQ choice? I guess you'd need a codex in order to take it solo unless these all work as datasheets.

Yes you can use a Patriarch as an HQ in a CAD of Genestealer Cults. You do not have to use the formation, however you have to use the Troops provided in Genestealer Cults. If you want to add Tyranids, you must add a Tyranids detachment (CAD, formation, whatever) Genestealer Cults & Tyranids are Battle Brothers in the same way every Imperial Army is BBs with themselves.

You just can't use the Patriarch as an HQ for Tyranids, because he isn't a Nid HQ. This is the same as trying to take a Blood Angels Chaplain as an HQ for your Space Wolves. They may both be Space Marines, but they are in different books and part of different Factions.

Essentially you can make your own cult from it as each selection is marked as a specific type.

HQ: patriarch, prime, magus etc.
All are marked as hq, elite, troop etc as needed.

So providing you make a legal choice its fine.

You act as though there's much else to the Tyranid codex.

Now the potential for invisible skytyrant swarm we might see more in the mix. I might try a Skyblight/Skytyrant/GSC combo, or GSC/endless swarm. Invisible carnifex broods even. Tyranids are the first horde army with access to telepathy, how it will play out is up in the air. 30 toxin hormogaunts with invisibility and shrouded is a scary proposition.

Daemons are technically considered a Horde army (players just rarely paly them that way) and have had guaranteed Invisibility since Belakor was reintroduced.

But I agreed that Nids have some great uses for telepathy and may be able to do some stuff Daemons can't.
