Look at an ork boy and look at a gaunt. Which one would you rather paint 100 of, and would it be a chore?

Not saying that s the only option, but that will give you a sense as to where your heart is.
That would be my advice as well

FWIW, I think Gaunts are faster to paint than Orks, but that's just me and it depends what standard you want to paint them.

Tbh I'm thinking of starting a Nid army!

I was thinking of getting the "Start collecting" nid box, but any recommendation on core unit's and loadouts to get first?

I'll be getting the models and paints before I bother with the 'dex. kind of how I've always done it, but normally results in some mistakes lol.

At least get yourself the battle scribe file and look in there.
It isnt the codex but blindly buying models isn't the best idea.

Here is my suggestion of a core for a horde army

Pick this formation

Spoiler:

Add a CAD
With a nice HQ ( most likely flying hyve tyrant ) some fun things and a few Venomtrophes
And you got yourself a swarm

If you are more into a winged swarm + winged monsters you might like this formation as a start for your army.

It depends if you want to have some randomness in your games go Orks they also have awesome models and have awesome Fluff Tyranids are better but not the greatest either so just depends on what you want out of your army

Tbh I was thinking of getting two skyblight formations.... if that's allowed? Not too familiar with formations tbh.

Yeah it's allowed. You can take as many formations as you have points for.

I find harpies a bit underwhelming, so taking four of them doesn't appeal to me. They are cheap for FMCs, but that's about all they have going for them.
6 squads of respawning OS gargoyles is pretty awesome though.

With the new genestealer allies which army has the potential to win more is pretty well decided for nids.

warhammer 40k mmo. If I can drive an ork trukk into the back of a space marine dread and explode in a fireball of epic, I can die happy!

Orks.

They're the reason the IoM still exists, after all. The Emperor should be dead (old age and whatnot), but he's not, only because the Orks believe he's still alive (same way Trukks painted red go faster, because the Orks believe they do).
