I keep seeing this pop up but just curious to what actually happened to this faction? I did see someone say they were squatted, but given their range of models I find it hard to believe GW just doesn't to sell those kits anymore and removed them from fluff? Surely they're just getting renamed as per Lizardmen, Skaven, Warriors of Chaos, Empire...

So what happened to them in fluff? Surely they didn't just suddenly vanish?

They got wiped out in the End Times last year. Nagash ate their god of the dead. Settra was killed. Nehekhara was killed even more. Nagash flew his Black Pyramid to Sylvania. And then the whole world blew up.
Nothing of their race, history or culture or character exists in Age of Sigmar anymore. For all intents and purposes Tomb Kings have been wiped clean of the fluff.

Apart from Arkhan and Nagash..
Right, but at this point they're so far removed from being Tomb Kings that I wouldn't even call them that. Nagash is the death incarnate and the ruler of the realm of the dead. Arkhan is one of his mortarchs. And in fluff terms they've been these things for thousands of years, longer than their undead lives in the old Warhammer world.
All WFB armies are fluff wise dead. Everyone died when the planet blew up. Anything in the "realms" is now some new creation thousands of years later made my a magic dragon (or whatever).
AoS only bares a passing resemblance to WFB. If you gave all the characters new names, no on would even try to connect the two. Personally, I wouldn't be surprised if AoS was originally envisioned as an entirely new IP, and some executive manager forced them to leach it onto WFB in the hope of keeping the original fanbase.
Upshot is, everything pre-aos is on the squat list countdown.

Ehh I would say both of them are more of vampire count characters heck Arkhan was moved over there when the Mortarch set came out right? Can't exactly remember.
And Neferata, and her city of New Lahmia. I think it's going a bit far to claim nothing of their culture or civilization remains within Age of Sigmar, considering that several of the most prominent figures in founding civilization in the realm of Shyish are themselves Nehekharan.
As such, I wouldn't be shocked to see elements of the tomb kings revived in future new releases, provided AoS holds on as a game long enough for the undead to get some actual new releases.
In the mean time, though, there's little to nothing about the tomb kings in the AoS fluff proper, and the existing product line has been retired, but the rules still exist for those who wish to use them, whether as an army in their own right or to fill some holes in the rather anemic Death Alliance as it currently exists. For instance, skeletal archers, horse archers, and skull catapults, while not amazing units, can lend undead armies some much appreciated range support, heralds are a gift of Nagash given how much of a problem hero sniping can be in this game, few armies aren't improved by a monster as fast, tough, and brutal as the necrosphinx, etc.

Maybe people should just be patient for once and wait to see what's being planned?
We know their constructs still exist in story. We know Settra was doing something in the last End Times book. Who's to say their models aren't going to be updated? The Skeleton Riders, replaced by living Nehekharans or something.
No one knows. What if. Maybe. Magic words that make anything possible in the future.

Except they can't, because of Nagash & the mortarchs, and the destruction of Settra & co. in the end times. They definitely *happened*.

Only while we who remember them exist. I mean, players who haven't been online or around since 2nd ed won't know the Genestealer Cult used to be its own army before now, and won't know what Squats are. In 4 years who's to say GW won't try to pretend Warhammer never existed and it was always "Warhammer: AoS" or "Warhammer 40, 000"

Ian Watson (the guy who wrote the Inquisition War books) had a (fairly annoying, but I wasn't a huge fan in general) sidekick character, Grimm the Squat. When one of his stories was reprinted in Deathwing, he was unceremoniously changed to Grill the Tech-Priest.

I would have said they can't just kill the WHFB universe too. Look what happened there. They can easily just change them into Wight Kings or something.

They didn't, by definition, kill the WHFB universe. The Old World was destroyed. The fluff for AoS is a /direct/ descendant of the Old World.

Say I take 40k. And I say, ok boys. The tyranids killed everything. and then they got the flu and died. But hey, someone forgot to eat old Roboute Guilliman in his stasis pod. Ten thousand years go by, and he wakes up fit and happy. But he sees everything around him is dead and destroyed! So sad. So he takes some old gullimite he's got lying around, and he creates a magic al world of talking ponies. They sing and dance and have lots of fun together! I'm going to call this new world, Age of Guilliman! And since I work for GW, its "official."
Are you going to accept such a travesty because its "official?" Because if so, you've got a stronger intestinal tract than I do.

Well even in your scenario there will be fans of the ponies because let's face it, ponies are popular in nerd culture these days.

Have an Exalt, good sir.
That said, there is still more than enough fluff connecting Age of Sigmar to the Old World. It's not just reusing many of the names, they constantly refer back to The World that Was.

You're forgetting how many people will buy the expensive packs of both "ponyators" and their nemesis the"blood ponies of murderblood" just because they are GW products, regardless of other better games available.
Btw, I take it you are in fact a GW writer.
Currently most played: Silent Death, Mars Code Aurora, Battletech, Warcrow and Infinity.

Honestly? Sounds better than 40k in its current state. I say go for it.

Yeah, but say you'd spent $1,000 on a Tomb Kings army only to have them completely removed from the game then a new story for your army was created and new models created to go along with the fluff. Would you be willing to put your $1,000 army aside knowing you'd never be able to play it again and spend another $1,000+ on a new army of new models? That's asking A LOT! As much as I LOVE the hobby side of Warhammer, if that happened to me, I'd probably just give it all up.
