I'm planning on building a gaming board, and for space issues, I was thinking of going for smaller than the standard 48x72 board, since I want to be able to play in my living room...

I can easily get my hands on styrofoam boards that are 20x40, and I was thinking of using three of those to get a 40x60 board, which is only slightly smaller than a standard, but would fit on my living room table...

I'll be mostly be playing 1000 - 1500 point games, will I be cursing Gork and Mork , wishing for dear life that I had those extra inches?

I tend to think that I'm better off having a smaller board that I can play than having a bigger board that will be cumbersome...

Thoughts?

Definitely go modular with your board. Then it takes up even less space and can be changed to make new battle fields. For 1000-1500 games, the smaller size should be enough. Bigger points games are better with more table though. Good luck with your table.

I made my playing board out of quadratic 24" wooden panels which I now have 8 of, some with trenches, other blank. That said most of the time we play 1500p games on a 4'x4' board, which fits nice on my table, while still leaving enough space for reserves, books and drinks. We start to use the recommended 6'x4' board while playing 1850 and upward and then the whole table is used and the wooden boards hang a bit over which is not that much of a problem if you bear it in mind but you have to be cautious.

Playing mostly Necromunda and Battletech, Malifaux is awesome too!

40 X 60 should be fine. as long as you deploy away from the center as per the rules nothing much should change.

3x3 works well for 600 points. For 1000 points your table will be spacey. It might start to feel a little cramped by 1500 points depending on how you play.

I think the most important rule is a depth of 4' so you can each have 12" deployment zones and start 24" apart. 4' x 4' is fine - for games of 1500 or less :-)

Bye bye Dakkadakka, happy hobbying! I really enjoyed my time on here. Opinions were always my own :-)

Thanks for the input! I'll be having more than 4 feet long, so I should be alright... Until I get that Stompa assembled and painted...

Personally, my biggest concern with the 4' x 4' table I have is the range on some Tau weapons. On a normal board you can deploy diagonally across to try to mitigate some of that, but here? I guess using a lot of terrain helps.

4x4 is a good small board size IMO, but tends to not work above about 1250ish in points.

Currently in the few people around me who play, there is no Tau player. we are Chaos, IG and Dark Angels, so far, with one harlequin warband in preparation too... But no Tau...

Not yet...

People have living rooms that won't fit a 6x4? I have mine setup in my third bedroom along with a painting desk. I guess go with whatever the biggest size is that will comfortably fit. I have a problem finding space for all my models and terrain on a full size table so you may have to restrict games to 1750 and under.
