So I've been seeing posts about people's various custom army groups, and since I actually prefer playing custom vs custom games, I'd make a thread for people to share their fluff/lists/colors/history about their own custom armies!

Let's see what you've got

"I don't have a good feeling about this... Your mini looks like it has my mini's head on a stick..."

"From the immaterium to the Imperium, this is Radio Free Nostramo! Coming to you live from the Eye of Terror, this is your host, Captain Contagion, bringing you the latest Heretical hits!"

I had a Chaos Army that's fluff revolved around ambushing SMs and extracting their Gene Seed to experiment on and corrupt. I had each of my Chaos spawn reflect a different loyalist chapter.

My orks have the theme of nuthin but stormboyz. While stromboyz are in my lists I have other units that are technically warbikes and deffkoptas, but are modeled to look like the suped up cybork versions of stromboyz who have big shooty gunz.
While stormboyz have low life expectancy the deathskull boss mek and Painboss who took over have made them even more survivable and killy.

Skitarri (Imperial Guard, "Space Marines", Tempestus, Skitarii) employed to use Experimental and Prototype weapons discovered across the galaxy, but mostly uncovered from within their home planet of Schrott's continent spanning Vault.

Lots of Tanks with crazy weapons, an Ordinatus Majoris armed with a Sonic Disruptor, many baneblade class tanks with many different designs, "Space Marines" are experimental Exo Suit wearing special forces, All sorts of mechanical and technological madness.

I've posted the longer fluff plenty of times, ill post the (more or less) full later if requested. not to mention pics.

508th Hammerhead, Imperial Guard Infantry Regiment

This regiment holds a distinct hatred for the forces of chaos, putting forward inordinate amounts of resources towards research and development of specifically warp resistant equipment and weapons. Unfortunately they have since been brought to ruin when Tau attacked their sector en masse. The 508th was neither equipped or trained to deal with such a threat, and has suffered substantial losses attempting to hold off the assault.

507th Shock Army, Imperial Guard Armored Regiment

An armored regiment located within the same sector, the 507th was better equipped to deal with Tau, and has fared substantially better in their assigned areas than the 508th. They have been periodically sending reinforcements to the 508th since the conflict began, however as Tau attacks intensify and supply lines grow thinner it is questionable how long they can maintain this.

I always enjoy pulling TT wins in my fluff, but even if you don't win, random funny/awesome moments can become fluff in there own right. For instance, take some of my cultists. I have one cult champion (called "Lord Ironcoat") who has become, fluff wise, a hero among the cultists, for being seeming unkillable. This coming from a game where he killed a terminator Sargent in a challenge, and then was the only survivor of another few games when his whole squad was wiped out. On the other end, I have one I call "Ralph", Ralph, with surprising consistency, has been the first model to die in many games, and has never survived a single game, often being taken out by exploding vechiles, or failing dangerous terrain tests. So fluff wise he is a clumsy screw up who is considered the biggest failure in the warband. "KHORNE DAMMIT RALPH! YOU LET THE SPAWN OUT AGAIN!"

Khorne Chosen Marine Riding a Juggernaut

Belgium

KDK Warband named the Iron Slaugther.

Came to me during a thread discussion after we've got the KDK rumors and leaks.

For some reason the discussion diverged to Crimson Slaugther book and i was listening to Iron Maiden Fear of the Dark song.

So i though " hey Iron Slaugther, kinda sounds cool, and it also sounds like a Power/Death metal band name", so it stuck.

Not much of fluff about them, just a bit around my Lord Cainlorn the Blood Masked.

Khorne Lord that got badly wounded in his face by a Plasma shot when he was a Zerker Champ, Had the Dark mechs smucks make him a facial plate by pouring adamentium directly on his wounds, the face plate took the form of his Screaming disfigured face that looked like a Skull with some remnants of flesh.

He's riding a custom bike Daemonically Possesed.

His former mount was a Juggernaut, during a battle with White Scars, he dueled with a WS Co Captain, the WS managed to kill the Juggernaut with lucky Plasma shots, but Cainlorn took his skull anyway.

After the battle he retrieved the WS capt, Master crafted bike and the remnants of his former mount, gave it to the Dark mech, who used the jugger physical remains to reinforce the Bike, de-sacralize it, and call back the essence of the jugger back into the construct, wich twisted it even further, the sound of the metal twisting and cracking decided Cainlorn to call it "Twisted Metal".

He's riding ever since then.

Blood Angel Terminator with Lightning Claws

Currently running CSM/IA 13 or SM/Scions/IG. They're meant to be Fallen Angels trying to recreate the Order (an order of knights from Caliban) calling themselves "the New Order". I use the CSM/IA 13 so that I can run the Fallen Champions formation (because Cypher + infiltrating Chosen = awesomesauce), and I'm currently putting together the SM/Scions army, hopefully going to be able throw in IG eventually (my wallet can't exactly do it all at once without entering the afterlife).

The New Order basically started as a squad of Fallen who popped out of the Warp together, and got picked up by a Rogue Trader as bodyguards after butchering their way through a Chaos Cult which had been growing in influence on a small Civilized World. Their leader eventually managed to get his hands on the Rogue Trader's Warrant of Trade, and used the Dynasty's resources to found the New Order. They came out alongside an Apothecary, so they were able to remove the progenoid glands in their necks to slowly begin building up the numbers of Astartes in the New Order.

Gene-seed is a seriously rare resource for them, since they only had 8 Astartes to begin with, most of the members of the Order become Knights (basically, Scions) after completing training, with some of the best equipment that can be provided to them. The most exceptional of these Knights (talking about the top 2% or so) are chosen to join the Paladins (Astartes), and receive further training and genetic enhancement. Those who can't be trained from childhood form the rank-and-file of the New Order's military (sort of like half-members of the Order, called Yeomen) , since the New Order is composed primarily of men and women rescued from worlds that have been shattered by Chaos incursions, and thus few are going to be young enough to become Knights (erryone else is basically IG).

Full lore here:
Spoiler:

Foundation: After several decades serving a dying Rogue Trader Dynasty, the Fallen Angels' leader (I've been debating with myself on this one, whether or not to run with Zahariel, a Librarian from the HH series, or a custom leader) managed to convince the Dynasty's final scion to name him heir to the Dynasty. After securing the Warrant of Trade, which came with the condition of putting down any religious Cults in the Sector, though most members of the Dynasty chose to interpret that as "non-Ecclesiarchy" Cults, Zahariel set about reinstituting the Order, whose principles the Lion and Luther had so spectacularly failed to uphold. Using the resources available to him as a Rogue Trader, Zahariel went about setting up an intricate network of spies within the Sector he was responsible for protection (might make this into a sub-sector instead). Using these spies, he was able to protect this Sector from anti-Imperial revolts to an uncanny degree.
Zahariel also used his influence as a Rogue Trader to create highly profitable trade routes across the Sector; doing his best to create thriving economies all across his region of space. Due to the age in which Zahariel was born, he had never really seen Xenos as a sort of arch-enemy, and thus has no problem with establishing mining operations and the like in conjunction with certain Xenos species. Thus he has acquired huge amounts of resources for himself via shrewed negotiations and intelligent use of his rights as a Rogue Trader. During this time, he also made a habit of frequently sending agents to orphanages across innumerable planets to recruit children into Zahariel's private army. Trained from a young age, these children would eventually become Knights of the New Order.
A sad, but glorious beginning: Once several dozen thousand Knights had been amassed (several decades of training and building numbers, at least), Zahariel leads them into battle on a Hive World that is in the process of being conquered by a powerful Demagogue of Chaos that has already conquered a dozen systems before this one. The beleaguered PDF forces of this world's Hive Primus looked into the sky as screaming Valkyries hurtled over the Hive; dropping tens of thousands of well-equipped warriors behind the hordes of Heretics in the process of storming the Hive. As this occurred, assault landers landed thousands more light tanks and improvised battle vehicles. As the defenders watched the walls of ordnance and hot-shot laser fire, Zahariel's voice sounded crystal-clear through every working Vox within the Hive,"This is Zahariel of the New Order, calling all faithful of the Emperor to step forward and crush these weaklings beneath their boots. The Emperor calls upon you to defend you families! Any who is possessed of a weapon and the faith to use it, let him step forward to cast these blasphemers from your homes!" With that, the PDF manning the fortifications and millions of men and women surged forward to destroy the host assembled before them.
As the well-disciplined fire of the Knights cut down swathes of Cultists, wave after wave crashed into the rear of the Demagogue's forces; destroying them utterly. The civilian losses that day were staggering, but the victory was absolute. And, although the war upon that world was ultimately lost, due to the Traitors' overwhelming numerical superiority in virtually all other Hives upon the world, hundreds of thousands of recruits for the New Order were acquired in that war; enough to kickstart the Order' operations across dozens of Sectors of the Segmentum Obscurus. In the millenia that have followed, the New Order has grown to encompass two Chapters around the Eye of Terror, one near the Maelstrom of the Ultima Segmentum, and one near the Storms of Vengeance of the Segmentum Tempestus. With each passing century, the New Order grows ever stronger; sending its elite forces forward to combat the omnipresent threat of Chaos.
Organization:
The New Order is organized into 4 Chapters, currently, though more will be founded whenever the New Order has sufficient power to do so. The Grand Master is the head of the Order in its entirety, with each Chapter having a Chapter Master at its head. Each Chapter each fields several Brigades of Knights (10-20k troops a pop) and many more Brigades of Yeomen (20-40k troops a pop), and is responsible for maintaining the Sub-Sector wherein it is situated (basically just means that they ensure there the Sub-Sector is as pacified as humanly possible, so that the Chapter can recruit from it). Whenever a Grand Master dies, the Chapter Masters form a Grand Council to choose a new one, and the Chapter Masters are chosen in a similar manner by the Admirals under their command. Astartes are organized into multiple Fleets tasked with pacifying any and all rebellions that are Chaotic in origin. Every fleet is commanded by an Admiral (always an Astartes) who is appointed by the Chapter Master. The unit of the Ravenwing is, of course, preserved in the New Order, as a fighting unit of the original Order, and remains a corps of Veteran Space Marines specializing in rapid attack warfare on jetbikes (standard bikes are considered to be too slow to allow for the Ravenwing to redeploy swiftly enough to be in the precise location necessary to turn the tide of battle, though, on the tt, I still have to use regular bikes).

-Orks- The WAAAGH is basically lead by two Warbosses (Vankraken and Scuzzer). Both think they are the boss and the other is the #2. Scuzzer is the thinker and loves to come up with crazy ideas to win the fight and loot. Vankraken loves looting so much that he steals every idea he can and uses Scuzzer as his strategy maker. The poor Nobz in all of this are very confused as to who they are suppose to answer to (questioning who is the boss usually ends with a PK to the face so only the dumbest of Nobz bother asking) while the boyz are too wrapped up in the Ork life to question which of the two big stompy bosses they should be listening to more. Deathskulls to such a degree that they go out and loot other Orks for the WAAAGH. Even other klan's preferred tactics aren't safe from their looting. Extreme hatred for all things Eldar (bunch of point eared gitz) although dark elder at least have nice pointy bits and their "hova trukks" tend to explode nicely). Currently taking on a Tau colony world as well as fighting any gits that show up to try and take their preclaimed loot.

-Tau- The Tau hunter cadre is in a former Imperium system that has recently been claimed by the Tau Empire. While securing decisive victories in the hopes of establishing a new Sept in the area, the end result is an over extended force surrounded by enemies (lot of Orks that tend to show up trying to loot things and calling everyone gits) and supply lines that have been interrupted due to the Tyranid threat arriving in the Eastern Fringe which also has opened up more opportunities for Freebootas, Dark Eldar/Corsairs, and even some overly zealous forces of the Imperium to attack logistical lines. For a while the Cadre was without an Ethereal who was killed during some of the ship to ship combat in the final days of the fight for the system. Forced to rely on the leadership of the cadre's sub commanders the Tau have fought off the Ork WAAAGH numerous times but casualties and supplies have been becoming increasingly limited. Very recently a small fleet of colony, supply, and troop ships have arrived in the system to reinforce the Tau position and begin the establishment of the new Sept under the leadership and guidance of Ethereal Aun'El Cena (cue trumpets).

-Grey Knights/Inq- The order known as " The Burning Heart of the Emperor" lead by Brother Captain Mannis and Inquisitor Mel are out cleansing the Emperor's worlds of heretics, xenos, and daemonic corruption. Visions of an event that supposedly will lead to the eventual start of a massive daemonic incursion has brought them to a system that was recently abandoned to the Tau (due to bureaucratic error, incompetent local government, and the increased Ork activity destabilizing the sector).
"This threat will be purged, the sector cleansed of all corruption, the daemonc threat stopped. These foul creatures made the Imperium bleed and that will not be forgotten, it will not be forgiven. They will be shown the Emperor's fury and they shall learn, fury burns" -Brother Captain Mannis-

-Space Wolves- Wolf Guard Battle Leader Bard has basically taken the keys to one of papa wolf's battle barges and is out cruising with his wolf bros looking to start fights, get squig faced drunk, and hopefully pick up some Sisters on the way. These adventures are known as "Bard's Booze Cruise"

Currently I'm working on fluffing out an army combination of sisters/space wolves to instead be an amazonian type army that used to be part of the space wolf defense force on Fenris. They were sent off on a sort of suicide mission to secure a webway gate in a system closer to Fenris than other chapters. The mission wasn't important enough for Space Wolves themselves to deal with or just didn't care enough to deal with.
Long story short, they survived the fight and secured the gate over the next hundred years, suffering a lot of losses. They became more or less hero figures to the native population for quelling the xeno threat. Since they were never intended to survive, the Space Wolves had long forgotten about them and never sent any supplies, reinforcements, or even a transmission to check in. The surviving few from the original army were placed in charge as the most capable candidates to defend the system and stayed to protect them.
Over the next thousand years or so their descendants (or in two cases, the originals but heavily augmented with bionics) are still in control and have been forming their own armies. They raid ships passing near their system for supplies and armaments to bolster their ranks.

Still very much a work in progress but this is more or less a summary of what I have so far.

Chapter name: The Shining Helms
Motto: Tueri Caput
Battlecry: "Wear a helmet and you're always safe!"
Colors: All dark blue except for a shinning silver helmet

Originally an Ultramarine successor chapter named The Shining Stars, soon after their founding they suffered a catastrophic attack from Chaos Space Marines. They narrowly drove them away, but 75% of their number was lost including the chapter master and all the leadership save for the captains of the 6th and 10th companies. It was entirely a coincidence that these were the only officers wearing helmets during the attack, but the fledgling chapter attributed their survival to diligent use of protective helmets.

Changing their name to The Shining Helms, they have become fanatical believers in the protective powers of the blessed helmet. No Shining helm is ever seen on the field of battle without head protection, and veterans can often be seen wearing sculpted crests on their headgear, or helms of exotic armor patterns. Particularly zealous Helms will occasionally go as far as attacking other space marine chapters they find lacking in "discipline" or taking the helmets of honorable foes as trophies.

The Shining Helms are not strictly codex compliant. The captain of the second company leads three squads of elite sniper scouts, the dreaded Headhunters, who deliver the emperor's justice to unprotected skulls. Shining Helms apothecaries are tasked with not only recovering the gene-seed of fallen comrades, but their helmets as well, and can often be seen with a slew of helmets hooked to their belts. Additionally, the chapter employs squadrons of Field Police who answer only to the chapter master and drop onto the battlefield to enforce helmet discipline among the ranks.

Chaos Marines: the Iron Host, branching from the Iron Warriors, 21 marines were marooned on an icy planet which was taken over by a Nurgle-ized bombs filled with daemonic spores that slowly ate away all the flesh of the marines and replaced each cell with a spore. Instead of recruiting other neophytes, the Iron Host instead boost their numbers by being cut apart, acting like starfish in the presence of the spores that infected them in the first place. Lord Anthrallis, first to wake, was chosen by the Daemon of the virus to lead his marines to spread Nurgle's presence.

I also have an Orks army that's slowly coming together:
Waaagh boss, Kon Kushin, Masta of Da Fasta, wiv a gud strong 'ead on his shoulders, leads a waaagh, made up of mostly deffskulls and evil sun clans, mixing into one under His banner, known as Da Face Brakaz, of showing off all the crazy stunts he can pull of while riding his ramshackle steed. One of these stunts, was charging a space marine captain, who was also riding a bike, and instead of using his power klaw, Kushin instead reached out as far as his neck would allow, and collided faces with the captain with such force, the unhelmeted captain's head ripped off his body. Chalking his victory to Having worn his "Speshul 'Elmet", which was now irreparably crushed and warped into his skull. Kushin proved that he was da biggest and da strongest.

The Orks of da Face Brakaz have a rather annoying habbit of looting the bikes and other vehicles belonging to the Iron Host, to the point of mutual benefit. The marines create a bike, the orks 'improve' it by adding more guns, cannons, engines and wheels, and the marines steal them back, being sure to not kill amy of the brutes, so the Orks are still around to believe that the best bike around just got jacked by some spikey humies. This leads to the Brakaz following the Iron Host to battlegrounds, where the orks rush forward and are treated in a fashion reminiscent of the days of old where Iron Warriors would send wave after wave of Guardsmen into the fray. The good thing with Orks: they always grow back.

I came up with the idea for a SM chapter based on Polynesian/Maori culture. Haven't come up with a name yet, but I'm thinking they'd be a Salamanders successor (fire/volcano motifs are prevalent in Polynesian mythology), but likely using Codex: Space Wolves since I imagine them as being a more assault-based. I'd need to modify some flavor text (Hellfire instead of Hellfrost, etc.), but I think it'd be a simple transistion.

At my desk

My Ork army right now is five flyers (In the middle of converting a sixth) with some Boyz for mandatory Troops, a Big Mek for mandatory HQ and some Mek Gunz for reliable firepower. I just love Ork flyers, so I field tons of them (the table does feel a bit small when 80% of your army is flying, but it's fun). I have some basic fluff about a Big Mek who's obsessed entirely with flight recruiting a bunch of Speed Freaks and told them to go flying in what he's built.
I'm working on some custom rules for a Big Mek flyer so I can have him zipping around too. Everyone I play against thinks the list is ridiculous, but it does sometimes win.

My Chaos Space Marines right now are formed of a small contingent of Emperor's Children that corrupted a previously loyalist chapter that had been desecrated with promises of Slaaneshi goodness, got them all hyped up on space drugs and told them of the Maraviglia. So it's basically just Noise Marines on a search for the perfect sound, on a quest to recreate the Maraviglia. Some Daemons come along too because they're doing so well. I call them the Chorus of the Apocalypse.

I'm also in the middle of another Chaos Marine project to do one Chaos Lord (Well, a Sorcerer for Tzeentch, but lords for the other three) dedicated to each Chaos God and one squad of each cult unit to go with them. Four horsemen of the apocalypse (and their fanatical followers). I love the fluff of chaos characters and I love the modeling opportunities.

My Eldar threesome list (Craftworlders, Dark Eldar, and Harlequins) doesn't really have a great deal of specific fluff, I play those factions because I love everything about them. But what I do know is that they are defending some crone worlds for when the Eldar come back from the brink of extinction, so they all work together.

Still fluffing out my space marines, they're basically a contingent of Emperor's Children that weren't around for the whole Isstvaan shabang and are continuing their crusade spreading the imperial truth and killing off their traitorous brethren. They have kept their iconography the same to show that their pride has not been corrupted. (Basically they're just an excuse to use my 30k Emperor's Children in 40k).

3000pts Blood Angels (4th Company) - 2000pts Skitarii (Voss Prime) - 2500pts Imperial Knights (Unnamed House) - 1000pts Imperial Guard (Household Retainers)

2000pts Free Peoples (Edlynd Fusiliers) - 2000pts Kharadron Overlords (Barak Zilfin) - 500pts Ironweld Arsenal (Edlynd Ironwork Federation) - 1000pts Duardin (Grongrok Powderheads)

I'd need to modify some flavor text (Hellfire instead of Hellfrost, etc.), but I think it'd be a simple transistion.

Of what i've found the Maui word for Fire is Ahi and Warrior is Kekoa, something like Ahikekoa Marines/ Chapter of Ahi or anything else.

Good info. Thank you for that. Pulled up Google Translate (so, you know, grain of salt and all that), and came up with Ahi Ariki (Fire Lords)

I came up with the Rust Runners, a White Scars Successor Chapter. Their colors are red, orange, and tan. They still favor the Mongol-style facial hair of the White Scars and also their tactics to a tee. They fight almost exclusively on bikes, though they have Land Speeders. Most of their tanks are backfield, if they ever even bring them.

The Black Watch: Seven elite mixed-force brigades formed during the Scouring from the remnants of Imperial Army regiments that survived the Heresy, mostly from the Solar Auxilia and "Old Hundred". They are based in a small 19 world fiefdom ("The Holdfast Imperialis"), held in the Emperor's name by their commander and founder, a Perpetual. Has ties to the Ordo Malleus and Mars Mechanicum. Much of their activities are classified by the Inquisition and Munitorum.

On the capital world of the "Holdfast Imperialis" (located in the Segmentum Tempestus), is a fortress known as "The Keep", the exact location unknown even to the brigade and regimental commanders of the Watch. Here are based "The Eternals", a specialist group utilizing Dark Age technology to deal with problems of Chaos corrupted Dark Age constructs (things in the same vein as the Bloodtide Incident, and corrupted Castigator Autonomous Bipedal Weapons Platform). They are also pretty competent daemon fighters, although nowhere close to the Grey Knights. They work closely with the Ordo Malleus. Inquisitors and Mechanicus personnel visit "The Keep" on a regular basis.

I'm still fleshing out each individual world in the Holdfast. Friends have commented that it all sounds a bit Mary Sue-ish. But if it is, screw it. I'm having fun with the whole thing. It makes for some nice custom forces to paint up.

Chapter Name: The Storm Bringers

Founding: 23rd Founding

Primarch: Roboute Guilliman

Tactics:
-Codex Astartes tactics
-Artillery strikes followed by a Assault Squads flying towards the battered forces
-Tactical and/or Devastator Squads fighting the enemy then Terminators teleport to the battle, preferably inside the enemy army.

Home: Fleet-based

Backstory: A successor chapter of the Ultramarines, they were a Codex-compliant chapter prior to the destruction of their homeworld, its name now lost to history. An Ork Warlord and it's klan attacked the Storm Bringer's world in an invasion that would have lead to a WAAAGH!! if it succeeded. The invading Orks were so numerous, they were making planetfall in hours, striking numerous cities on the planet. Codex Astartes tactics and strategies weren't enough to hold back the green horde. The planet's forces were forced to move back to the world's capital, which houses the Fortress-Monastery of the Storm Bringers, within months. After holding out for more than a year, Inquisition forces finally made it into the system. Unfortunately, after communicating with the leader of the relief force, it is revealed that the Inquisition deemed it necessary to perform an Exterminatus on the planet, stressing the need to stop the soon-to-be WAAAGH!! The Astartes on the planet immediately prioritized the evacuation of Imperial citizens while they and the PDF held the line against the Orks. New strategies were employed to further delay the Orks. Assault Squads performed suicide jumps and Terminators teleporting into Ork forces, trying to disorganize the Orks while surviving artillery vehicles bombarded the farther ranks of the greenskins. Tactical and Devastator Squads rained fire from the opened ramps of Stormraven Gunships after more Assault Squads and the Chapter Master jumped into the fray. Finally, the evacuation was complete, and it was the military's turn to fly to safety. Once reaching the Inquisition's forces, the Exterminatus began, and the Storm Bringers' hearts broke at the sight of their world being devastated by the Inquisition's mighty power. It wasn't until a few days later did the news of a brave company of the PDF sacrificing themselves to evacuate everyone (including the Space Marines) reach the Storm Bringer's Chapter Master's ears. Flying into a rage uncommon amongst the blood of Guilliman, he locked himself inside his room and fasted for thirty days. Afterwards, he gathered the survivng Astartes and together, they vowed to never fail humanity again. They gathered all battlefield reports and intel, all the strategies that they employed and compiled them with their favored tactics from the Codex Astartes and formed their own book of war; the "Scriptum Tempesta." To this day, the Chapter continues to adhere to the Scriptum Tempesta in the defense of humanity, and has always brought the storm to those who seek to destroy it.

Battle Cry: "Like thunder, we march! Like lightning, we strike! WE BRING THE STORM!!"
