Sorcerors are priority target #1 for Centstars, I see.

Joke's on the Centstar, because the Sorcerers can make them pop their own Librarius Conclave.

The Librarius will most likely be in the same unit as the Cents. Much how like the Sorcerors will either be protected by some kind of Terminator meat shield or a wall of cultists.

The Librarius Conclave does not require you to deploy them all into one unit. One tactic--which someone actually already posted about in the thread in 40k General about these new powers--is to have one Librarian with the Centurions and then another on Bikes with Grav bikes near the Centurions so they still get the benefits of the LC.

So yeah, maybe you won't be ganking the whole Conclave in one go but losing any part of it hurts.

Why would one do this? If you are going to protect a unit with Invisibility, why wouldn't you protect the one that's going to have your important things in it?

I guess it makes a bit more sense in ITC, but still...

Yeah, they're pretty alright in general. Some of these seem pretty damn nifty, honestly.

Now imagine what will happen if these get paired with a new Codex with reduced cost units (provided a new Codex doesn't invalidate the formations altogether)

At least it's not ork level. The core comes at 385 pts. But the rules are still far from what chaos deserves.

I'm liking this. I might actually get to play my Iron Warriors as actual Chaos Marines for a change. That'd be the first time in years actually.

Overall I think I'm going to enjoy this release

Meh, color me not impressed.

-Black Legion Warband is just sometimes PE(E!) and a boost to Boon, which probably will still suck.
-Cabal <<<<< Conclave, especially since there's still no good star unit for them other than maybe Spawn
-Daemon Engine Pack isn't too bad, but nothing to write home about imo. Forgefiends are decent but we still play in an edition where there's a pretty solid chance of that expensive vehicle getting one shot.
-Hounds of Abbadon is pretty ok. Waaagh is one of the better things from Orks, and the occasional (but completely random) pseudo Furious Charge+ is ok. Assault Infantry is still pretty bad all around, though, even with big buffs.
-Tormented requires you to bring Possessed. Sure, you get Rending, but still. Pass.

Yeah, but this is Chaos we're talking about. We shouldn't expect them to be as good as other armies. We should just be happy that they aren't worse.

Yeah this is my feelings too. The only formation worth it is the Cabal which is a less good conclave.
I think you could make an interesting list by allying the Cabal all on bikes into a Renegade Vraks list that took lots of 55pt spawn squads.

I don't even play CSM except as an occasional tack-on to my Daemons, but it just feels annoying how the Formations are done. Compare the Cores (I assume Black Legion Warband is the Core). Reclamation Legion gives rerolls of Reanimation and wide Move Through Cover and Relentless. Demi-Company gives ObSec en-mass and use of the best Doctrine. CSM gets... sometimes Preferred Enemy and a boost to Boons, which suck anyway. Whoo.

None of the formations seem to give just free rules like most of the ones that are out so far. No just given MTC, Stealth, Hammer of Wrath, or anything like that.

The Black Legion Warband is great: Knacker a Rhino and shoot with PE at everything else that phase. The Cabal can hang out in a unit of Obliterators, who are Daemons, meaning they'll get bonuses to their Invulnerable save from Cursed Earth and the Grimoire when they aren't getting them from the Mark of Tzeentch. Speaking of Tzeentch, rolling twice on the Boon table doubles your chance of becoming a Daemon Prince and many of those boons are actually handy. It makes taking the Gift of Mutation really good. And it's not just challenges, but the Boon of Mutation as well. pair a Sorcerer of Tzeentch with a Dark Apostle and go to town generating new Daemon Princes. BS5 Forgefiends are nice too. The Hounds of Abaddon get bonuses to assault in combination with Dirge Casters, that cancel Overwatch. That's good. The Tormented are handy like the Obliterators because they're Daemons, and having Fleet, Rending, WS5, I5 Daemons is good.

Some people are complaining about the Black Legion Decurion, and actually it isn't bad.

Assuming you wanted to just run PA Vanilla Marines, you were buying VotLW anyway. Looking at it like that, how many tax units actually exist in the formation? There would be none.
Vanilla Marines are still junk because Plague Marines exist, but it really isn't as bad as some people are making it to be.

However, we need to see the rest of the formations from this, and any of the formations from Crimson Slaughter.

Favoured of the Warmaster only applies to rolls from the Champion of Chaos rule.

Shroud of Deceit will be fun. Especially against a Tau unit--imagine a riptide or a Kx139 shooting at other Tau.

Sounds very, very pretty.

Shroud of deceit is hilarious. I can't wait until someone takes control of my chapter master and then makes him use his orbital bombardment on his own men. Bonus points if he scatters onto himself.

Wait, is there anything stopping him from placing it on himself? Normally you can't shooting allies, but is he an ally of himself when you take him over?

Unfortunately, his rules come packaged with him. I think the statement that they were in the WD was probably false.

Hopefully he is either an Upgrade to a Tactical Sergeant or a low-price HQ with Independent Character. If he has to run around on his own he is dead. Also, disintegration weapons could be nice.

Just managed to pick up one of the 25th anniversary banner figs for a reasonable price on eBay. If I get one of these 30th Marines I may combine the two on to one base. It'd be like a little Anniversary dio . It would only need a magnet in one foot to make it swappable back to it's original base.
