Maugan Ra is basically a garbage fire. A unit of Death Jesters is pretty close to that as well.
They are single shot Hit on 2+ wound on 2+ with strength5 ap4 small blasts on casualties.(Maugan Ra 36in range fires twice with split fire, rerolls extended ballistic table) Add on the moral tests for fall back and that's a whole lot of hurt and laughs coming from 1 unit
instead of a Solo Death Jester with only a 5+ invul either forced to stay with a troupe/shadowseer for survivability or remain solo
Edit: Yes I'm aware of the 3 shot mode too, but I don't find myself using it too often. I do use it. Also with the combined shots from a unit of D.J.s you are more likely to roll that 6 to wound making it AP2
I should of added a note that I Play Harlequin Primary always. I've done really well with Solo Harlequin Army. The concept for Maugan Ra came when I was researching CADs to add to either a Masque or Cegorach's Revenge. A masque I would always take 6 Shadowseers but with C.R. you kind of have to find a use for the 3 Death Jesters... adding A 2+armor save to the front of that unit (and maybe a shadowseer veil) increases their survivability while not forcing D.J.s to join a Troupe to be viable.
The problem I see with most harlequin armies is they go in expecting to win, instead of going in to cause the most laughs and headaches. Focusing on the later has allowed me to table Tau, Tyranids, I.G., Eldar and win multiple games against S.M., Chaos, Orks. I've only been tabled twice so far and that was mainly from lack of knowing the opponents army and specials.... like 2+ non stop jinking Dark Angels with overpowered twinlinked everything but even they walked away with a headache.
