Aha, want to build a Legion, but find the prices are too damn high? Today I'll show you how to create a small but respectable Legiones Astartes force.
My budget is £200.
Begin!
1:
Buy BaC, no, seriously, you won't regret it and these squads can be outfitted in a number of ways and the potential for conversion is great, you can divide the 30 tacs whichever way you want! I personally used 2 Legion Veteran squads (Magnetized for customization purposes), a Legion Support Squad and then a Legion Heavy Support squad. The terminators can be easily converted to your Legion's 'flavour' of terminator, I bought some Cyclone Missile Launchers off ebay for six pounds for Fulmentarus. You can swap weapons around the Chaplain and Terminator Captain using leftover bits (Plasma Pistol counts as Volkite and Power Sword counts as Paragon Blade,) for customization.

95+6=101, 99 pounds remaining.

2: Get some old rhinos!

Good old metal bawkses, you could buy the new ones, but hell, they are not time accurate! Instead, get a bunch of old Rhinos from 2nd edition on eBay. I picked up three for 26 quid in total. Unless your opponent is OCD as hell, you really shouldn't have a problem since it's the same kind of rhino!

101 - 26 = 75. 75 quid left!

3: Get your Legion's special unit!

Most expensive of these, by far, is Suzerain, but headhunters can be just tac marines in disguise and other special sauads are no more than 50!

4. Get any remaining bits!

Run out of bits or can wangle a little more on ebay? Use any remaining cash to get what you can.

It's infantry heavy, but it works. I used the remaining money to get Kheres Assault Cannons for my contemptor.

- 535pts
40K - 2000pts
HH - 3000pts

not sure how it all money's out, but I'd bite the bullet and avoid the PotL list all together:

2 Calth sets (build at least 2 20-man tactical squads, turn the other 20 marines into whatever you'd prefer. 10-man terminator squad, convert the "chaplains" and praetors into whatever)
ebay 1 additional Contemptor to run a full 3-dread talon.

your Legion's primarch
your legion's special stuff/whatever theme you chose.

I'll never be able to repay CA for making GW realize that The Old World was a cash cow, left to die in a field.

I'm with the 2 x calth sets.
2 x 20tacs, 1 x 10 termins, 4 special char and 20 extra marines to kit how you want. Plus 2 dreads and with a few magnets you get MM/AssC/CCW for both arms (L/R).

Most expensive things are calth and then suzerain as the special unit. Thats 95+60 leaving money for rhinos and other bots. The cheaper you pick up calth the better.

I would also agree that pride of the legion is a trap. Veteran squads are way too expensive.

The easiest and best way is too buy 2/3 boxes of Calth and do a good old fashioned infantry spam, you're looking at about 240 at full retail, so you can probably get it for less than 200.

If you were to take a BaC box and try to kitbash other units out of it, which ones would be worth it? Support squads? Heavies (with only HBs/MLs) Destroyers on foot?

Tacticals and Vet Tacs are the easy builds, but are any of the others that can be made with just basic PA bodies worth it?

I guess Heavies with Missile Launchers would be good.

Also, the PA bodies could be good for any special non TA units like the Ultras with axe and shield.

If you can't believe in yourself, believe in me! Believe in the Dakka who believes in you!

There are only so many bits in my box. I’ve looked into making those guys, but the parts, axes in particular, are sparse. A lot of my storm shields went into another project as well. And while I could order bits, keeping on topic for this thread: how to do in on a budget.

In my case, I’ve got a number of RTB01s in the Simple Green at the moment, so will have a good number of bolters, flamers, and MLs soon. But I’ve still got 10 BaC marines on the sprue. At least a few are going to be made into HQs, but I’m looking for what I can do with the rest.

Holy Terra.

I did PotL, and dont regret itone bit: I have a completly (read: mostly) fearless army in 30k, where the big Problem is supposed to be Ld

What i did:

BaC:
2x 10 man Vet Squads
1 10 man Support Squad (Volkites from FW)
Converted BaC Termi Praetor to Primus Medicae
Used the Chaplain as a Chaplain
Contemptor With Kheres and CCW
`Nother one: bought a contemptor from FW, used the MM from Calth as Conversion Beamer, bought a Volkite Culverin from FW
5 Mor Deythan: bought MK VI armour from FW, used leftover bits from calth and Vanguard Vets to make them look nice.
DARKWING!
CONVERTED PRAETOR!

As you can see, i have spent more and more Money on my Horus Heresy army.

If you played Iron Warriors the contents would be good for one of their Havoc squads. You'd still need more to get or convert more bits HB, ML, and/or LC bits to have anything more than a 5 man squad.

Support squads also, but again you'd need to hunt down more special weapons.

You can build standard Seeker squads (combi-weapons are a little sparse in the BaC box if you would even want them)

I think Destroyers would be hard because iirc the BaC box doesn't have alot of bolt pistols

It's pretty easy to make one of each combi weapon by splicing the spare part with a normal bolter.

For destroyers.. hear me out... Khorne bezerkers. Very cheap second hand, wearing period armour and lots of bolt pistols.
Granted , need a lot of cleaning up, but with a bit of effort, cheap and look good.

Oh.. and I've found, that with a bit of work, chaos raptor packs make perfectly usable mark 2 jump packs, and so so so much cheaper.
