Ive been playing 40k a long time but Ive never really used forge world models much. I know the baneblade has become common-place but I hate vendettas and I was hoping to pick up Avengers instead. Im trying to build a tournament list so I want to know more officially than just "local group is ok so its ok" sort of thing.

What's 'legal' is a decision between you and your opponent. As for what is 'legal' for a tournament, you would need to ask the organizer for that tournament as only he can answer your question for sure.

Again, for a tournament only the tournament organizer can decide what's legal. If they want to run a tournament where all Chaos players use the 3rd edition codex then that is their perogative. A tournament organizer can make any house rules he wants.

Its rules were written with 6th edition in mind, but it should work just fine in 7th edition, and is designed to be played in standard games.

As for RAW 40k, the Avenger is still legal, yes.

But I know very very few tournaments that play RAW.

From Games Workshop's perspective, everything sold by Forgeworld is perfectly acceptable in "standard games of Warhammer 40k". If a unit has rules that are available in a book that is currently available for sale, you're generally golden. If a unit has rules that are only available in older books that are no longer available for sale, you'll need to check with your opponent or a tournament organizer. The older the source, the less likely people are to agree to the unit's use.

When playing in tournaments, all bets are off. Every tournament and community group has its own peculiarities and house rules when it comes to what units are allowed.

'Out of date' is also something quite hard to quantify with 40k - for example, we're in 7ed so is the 6ed CSM codex 'out of date'? Most people would say that 'in date' just means to use the most recent version.

As mentioned, according to GW, the model is perfectly legal for games of 40k. The most recent rules are in Imperial Armour Aeronautica, where it is a Heavy Support choice for Adepta Sororities and Imperial Guard.

Some tournaments or clubs might have a more restrictive policy that doesn't allow Forgeworld or Imperal Armour units or something, so best to check before you take it to those places, but this is likely to change per tournament. You could also magnetise it to accept a Vendetta/Valkyrie weapons load out, and use it as one of those in tournaments that won't allow you to use Avenger rules. I've done this with Aquila Landers before (since I also dislike the Valkyrie model)
