So, we've got Execution Force, Betrayal at Calth and Deathwatch Overkill out so far. As above, what do we think of the new games?

I'm watching them with interest. Personally, they're a bit pricey for me and I haven't bought any yet for that reason. If they were a bit cheaper I would likely have picked them up.

My general reading of them is that they are too luck based / random overall? They arent so much indepth tactical board games as play and have a bit of fun?

Cautiously optimistic, I suppose.

Execution Force didn't excite me hugely - though I'm aware a good number of other people have good things to say of it - but Calth and Deathwatch have both been better examples of the game-producer's craft than any 40k offering of the last few years.

Played a few games of Betrayal at Calth with my nephew using proxies for the miniatures (Picked up the rules, boards and componetnts on ebay for less than £10). We've enjoyed it enough that I plan to purchase the full game so that I can get hold of the figures and some extra boards.

I also purchased Deathwatch Overkill when it was released but have yet to assemble the figures and play a game. After reading the rules it looks like fun and I am looking forward to having a game.

Well so far the only one I am looking forward too is Lost patrol and, frankly, that's more because of the price point is where I like it.

I am looking forward to what Forge World has coming down the pipe. Blood Bowl, Mordheim, even Epic (Which, honestly, is the only 40k I can be convinced to play)

The rumored AoS game has me interested but it will depend on the price point as well.

BaC is a bargain, especially if you get it for 20% off. Great segway into 30k in general. Heard the game isn't half bad as well (haven't played it myself). The minis aren't as flash as 40k ones, but that's kind of the deal with 30k marines. Well, apart from the EC.

Execution Force has lovely Assassin models which were well needed for an update, but the game? I didn't really enjoy it all that much. The Assassins would always have a rough time killing the Chaos Lord, since he could essentially kill an Assassin every phase he could see one. All you could do is pray he doesn't roll AVERAGE.

Finally, Overkill is an amazing game, along with beautiful models to look at (see Para's P&M blog). At our FLGS we had a Overkill game on a 4x4 table and it was a blast. Even on the regular boards the GS cult always has a decent chance to win, especially when some of the big bads turn up. I would say this is my favourite out the 3, but also the most expensive of them. However, IMO the models that you get are so much worth it that I would even advise just getting the Marines off eBay for £50. Absolute bargain considering you're essentially getting 10+ HQs all with amazing details.

If you can't believe in yourself, believe in me! Believe in the Dakka who believes in you!

The only boardgame that was ever a Specialist Game was Bloodbowl. The rest were all OOP when there was a Specialist Games division. The new games, including Space Hulk are not Specialist Games. There is no Specialist Games (yet?). Is that just semantics? Well, if you are waiting for Specialist Games to get going, you might be confused about the introduction of these new games. And, maybe expecting them to be supported with expansions like the old Specialist Games (and some of the old boardgames). Right now, they are not designed by or supported by a special division. When they go out of print, they won't be supported at all. It would probably be easier to follow events and discuss them if they were folded into Specialist Games.. And, maybe that would keep updates and new scenarios coming.

Deathwatch is fun. And, surprising tactical. But, hard to proxy. So, it's on hold until I get more mini's painted.
