Been reading FW HH book5 and theres a piece of fluff where Angron/Lorgar are attacked by an Eldar vessel. They board it and make it to the Autarch (Farseer?) who states Angron is "on an 8 sided path" or something similar. Lorgar states that he will save him however and they finish off the Eldar.
What is this fluff relating to and how does it tie into Angron/Lorgars relationship? Who was the Eldar and why did they try and warn Lorgar etc? Was it similar to Eldrad trying to warn Fulgrim of the Heresy?
I have vague recollecdtions of it in a HH BL book but cant find it.

thanks!

Surely the eight sided path is just a poorly veiled reference to chaos and its eight pointed star?

To be fair Lorgar has saved Angron and set him on a single track to bloodshed rage and murder!!!

Yes I think so too but why did the Eldar intervene, I think Istvaan had already happened at this point so warning Lorgar was pretty pointless!

You sure? seems like a pretty poor warning..since Angron was already ultra angry and Lorgar had already decided his fate. Must surely be pre Istvaan.

Went back and had a read there. There isnt actually a date listed for the incident. However its written in one of those sub text boxes (seperate to the main fluff story) with two other pieces of fluff that are post Istvaan (basicaly the incident seems to have taken place on Angron/Lorgars journey to the Calth system).
However I cant be 100% sure.

In that exchange, the eldar thought they would only be facing Angron, in an effort to kill him before he turns to chaos. Lorgar goes with him in to the eldar ship, and thus foils the future the eldar saw (ie Angron's destuction to prevent him following the eightfold path). The eightfold path is clearly a reference to chaos.

Not sure how much to spoiler or not, so here are my thoughts
Spoiler:
I believe this opens Lorgar's eyes to a possible future for Angron that Lorgar either hadn't seen or was ambivalent about. With the "confirmation" by the eldar, I think that energizes Lorgar to assist in Angron's ascension. I think you'll see that Lorgar then goes out of his way to protect Angron and pushes him into his ascension
.

8 sided path could be more specific, I think the big red killy bloody god has a bit of a fetish for that particular number.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
And Lorgar could save Angron by pushing him to ascend to daemon hood, so rather than Lorgar being 'don't worry I'll stop this' he's more like 'don't worry, I'll assure it' as Angron was dying slowly due to the nails, and pushing him to Khorne was his way of assuring he doesn't die.

I'm not sure if it was ever the authors intent but my impression of the story is that while the Eldar claim to endeavor to stop Angrons ascension to deamonhood, the actual object of their interference is the complete opposite.

When the Eldar attack, the two marine legions are about to come to blows, fracturing the attack on Ultramar and the 500 worlds. The eldar attack unifies the legions and ensure their completion of the shadow crusade and eventually the creation of the ruinstorm.

These Eldar want to avoid the Empire achieving an easy victory and emerging from the heresy united and relative unscathed.

Either Lorgar gets the idea of using Angrons ascension as a catalyst for the ruinstorm from the eldar, or he had already considered it, but he the encounter nudges him towards that path.

This whole event happens during the scouring of ultramar space by the joint world eaters and word bearers.

Lorgar has actually manufactured the whole scouring of ultramar space to do two things 1) cut off ultramar in a warp storm, 2) turn Angron into a demon prince.

:Lorgar knows Angron is dieing from the Butcher's Nails ,and knows you can't remove them so the only way to save him is to transform his body. So he manufactures a giant ritual of world destroying and rituals upon rituals during each world destroying. The World Eaters are pissed at the Word Bearers because they take to long in battle on the planets. The Word Bearers take too long because they're performing parts of the ritual while in battle to save the World Eaters primarch.

At some point a small fleet of eldar try to stop Angron, and the whole exchange happens. But they don't know that Lorgar is already aware and is doing the work. Angron and Lorgar slaughter the eldar together and Lorgar comments that they should just paint their armour red because they're always so covered in blood.
