Hello,

I wanted to ask the community at large if there are any collectors of the following older Imperial Guard lines:

- Mordian Iron Guard
- Steel Legion
- Tallarn
- Vostroyan
- Valhallan
- Catachan

Furthermore, I would like to know:
1: Which Regiment has the most appeal to you and why?
2: How do you obtain these miniatures including 'Out of Production' items if any?
3: Which Regiment do you dislike the most?
4: Do you still play games with your Regiment?
5: Have you heard rumours of your Regiment becoming discontinued or updated in future?
6: What methods have you used to convert/modify your miniatures to fill roles that your line may no longer have miniatures for, if any?

The Poll is multiple choice if you collect more than one Regiment. Be aware that I have excluded Forge World Regiments, and Cadian Regiments, as these lines are current and are available for purchase in Games Workshop stores or Forge World.
Thank you for your time and kind regards,

Vostroyans are head and shoulders higher quality than standard cadians, and the fixed weapons are relatively easy to convert to better stuff (heavy Bolter can simply be clipped off and replaced with another heavy weapon, flamer can be left a flamer or the top can be replaced with a melta barrel).

They are one of two objectively superior choices for guard models, in my opinion. The other bring Dkok.

"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"

Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"

"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"

Nae love for the Mordant Acid Dogs?!

The last one looks to have fought alongside a reprogrammed Necron sent back in time.

Edit: Oh, realised you meant actual models. Well, shucks.

Hello, did you vote for Vostroyans despite not collecting any?

That is correct, for the purpose of this poll and subsequent questions I am not interested in any existing miniature lines outside of the ones I have mentioned, or Regiments that do not currently contain miniatures.

Thank you.

I used to own a sizeable all metal Mordian Iron Guard regiment. I had bought some of the specialty models (certain special weapons and/or heavy weapons) from GW direct, but most of the army was bought second hand, predominantly from the swap ship here. It was still expensive, and a bit of a pain in the ass having to strip all the models I got from people, but it was certainly unique.

I sold the whole army a while back as I wanted a fresh start. The metal was a pain to convert and they didn't produce certain models I wanted (namely plasma gunners) so I reconsidered what I was going to do with my army. Then Victoria Miniatures released her Tannenberg Fusiliers line in resin, and I made the switch. Now I have an army that looks very similar to the old metal Mordians, but all in easier to deal with resin with much better proportions, and easy army swaps for all the special weapons I need, all for the same price as GW was charging (less for special weapons).

I've always loved the Mordian fluff and I liked the bright uniforms, if only just because they'd pop a little more on the tabletop.

Thank you, Praetorians have been added to the poll.

In regards to the picture you have shown, is that your own collection? I admire the paint work.

There are only a few out of production vostroyan models, but I got most of my vostroyans on Ebay, particularly the sergeants and plasma gunners. For OOP stuff, I own 3 mortar teams, and two different OOP sergeants, got all those on ebay. I bought most of my standard line infantry from my local game shop, because I want to support them.

I play with them all the time, particularly now that guard has cool new formations.

I really dislike the standard plastic cadians. I think they're the most boring regiment of guard, lore and aesthetics wise, and the bubble helmet + totally blank, round shoulderpads are really just awful. Vostroyans cost barely more (if at all, if you're good at ebay) and are vastly higher quality minis.

I have heard no rumors, because there are none. GW will sell vostroyans until they run out of stock of the metal models.

I recall those miniatures, however with the exception of Praetorians that can be converted from current Mordian Iron Guard, I am not interested in the entire lines that have gone out of production.
Thank you for your input however.

I use some similar ones from Victoria Miniatures, but I run them in grey with different heads, so they resemble the CSA.

I collect a Valhallan army. I backed the TGG kickstarter, and since that left me with both male and female IG, I decided to make them the 597th from the books.

I own a very few Steel Legion models, and have always wanted to play them, but the paucity of special weapons combined with the general lacklustre of mechanized guard since 5th edition has left me hanging empty-handed, sadly, so I didn't vote in the poll.

I have been doing a 30k superheavy company with the guard models (mostly Baneblade kits) I have purchased, but that is neither here nor there.

1: Which Regiment has the most appeal to you and why?

Well, I'm obviously pretty fond of the Praetorians, as I collected them. Honestly, if I was back in 2002 when I started playing 40k, knowing what I know now, I might have collected the OOP cadians (superior to the plastics and included the most useful special weapons) or even metal Catachans (dirt cheap, vastly surperior to the plastics, and easy to paint).

2: How do you obtain these miniatures including 'Out of Production' items if any?

The core of the army was always bought second hand. Metal strips clean, so second hand metals are as good as new with some work. However, I was able to fill a lot of the gaps with blisters off the shelf or with bitz ordering. For example, I think at one point I placed an order for nothing but Flamers, Meltas, and sergeants.

3: Which Regiment do you dislike the most?

I think they're all cool in their own way. The IG range has always been a high spot for GW. I'll take the opptorunity to lament that Steel Legion only got half a range, as they're amazing models, but without an Autocannon, flamer, or melta, they're a tough sell.

The range I probably would pick last would be Valhallans, just because they make me just want to build WWII soviets instead.

4: Do you still play games with your Regiment?

I haven't played 40k in almost two years.

5: Have you heard rumours of your Regiment becoming discontinued or updated in future?

Lol, no. The Praetorians were basically a joke army, and I think GW was shocked that they sold at all. They're one of the only official regiments to have no mention in any Codex since early 3rd.

6: What methods have you used to convert/modify your miniatures to fill roles that your line may no longer have miniatures for, if any?

Not much, really. The only missing piece for Praetorians is the plasma gun, and I clipped the barrel off meltas, and glued on a plasma tip instead. It's a crude conversion, but it seems to work okay.

Vostroyans! I have a company command squad that I acquired on ebay and a full veteran squad that I purchased off of someone at the local store.

I love the look and story of the Vostroyans and plan to build up the Vostroyan Heavy Armored 24th regiment, the 'Iron Bloods'

Steel Legion: The Original Bad Asses with Gas Masks!

I started collecting them when Codex: Armageddon came out. I think it was the Armoured Sentinel that really drew me in. Over that time I have built up a fair force of about 3000+pts, and growing.

I really liked the look of the models, gas masks, goggles, cool lasguns. The figures themselves had some interesting poses as well. Overall the idea of a mechanised force sounded really cool. And I believe that at the time they came out it was their 'special rule' to be able to take Armoured Fist Squads. So they really did have a different look and feel to other Guard regiments.

I personally opted for a different paint scheme than the studio one. I felt that the ash wastes and urban areas would tend towards being grey, so they got a blue/grey look.

I harbour no ill will towards any of the other regiments, but don't feel drawn to any either.

All of the infantry models are still metal only, and I doubt they will ever see a redo in plastic. I believe that the whole line is still available from the GW webstore; with the exception of the alternate Commander, alternate Sgt, Commissar, and perhaps the grenade launcher trooper. Luckily the heavy weapon teams (excluding the Missile Launcher) are rather easy to convert if you were so inclined; just swap the weapon. As well, the DKoK line can sub in for special models, or veterens quite well.

Here's a couple pics. I really should finally get around to taking some good 'Gallery' shots of these guys some day.

My favourite is Armageddon Steel Legion, because the're mechanised and I like mechanised warfare.

I also like the idea of Praetorian Guard, but las-locks? eh?

And the regiments I dislike (from least to most)
Vostroyans - Good fluff, but too pompous.
Valhallans - too russian-like. Who needs tactics, when you have abudant amount of troops?
Mordian - Too unnatural and illogical approach to warfare. They are basicly wannabe Space Marines in flak armour.

Seriously, Steel Legion all the way. If GW re-released their army range in plastic with full kits and options, I'd find it significantly more difficult to refrain from spending money I don't have on models I can't afford!

For those who are interested in Praetorians, there's always Cadians with Empire Pistolier heads (Chris Peach's army project featured in WD a couple years back);

I've had a Steel Legion army since they were introduced in 2000.

I think there are only 2-3 sculpts that are OOP. GW still sells most of the line on their website. Surprisingly, a squad of SL is only a penny more than it was 15 years ago. How is that possible?! I mean, if you listen to anyone who justifies GW's prices, they'll quote you all kinds of stats like inflation and commodity prices. Yet somehow, GW has only raised the price by 1ยข in 15 years...

3: Which Regiment do you dislike the most?

Probably Catachans. Mainly because of the thinly-veiled Rambo aesthetic.

4: Do you still play games with your Regiment?

They're one of my main armies, so they see the tabletop in a regular rotation. Definitely more of an NPC race, though.

5: Have you heard rumours of your Regiment becoming discontinued or updated in future?

No and no. Though plastic Steel Legion occasionally makes the rumor mill, but it's about as believable as plastic SoB.

6: What methods have you used to convert/modify your miniatures to fill roles that your line may no longer have miniatures for, if any?

Anyone with an all metal army is pretty much required to have a dremel. Many of the SL minis have their lasguns close to their body, so it involves a lot of careful grinding and fine filing to convert the missing special weapons (flamers and meltaguns) in the line.

When I played guard (my previous army to Tau), I played exclusively with Kasrkins, with custom (PigIron) helmets on my heavy weapons squads.

Before I chose them, I was seriously considering SS Mordian CCS & Veteran squads and penal Catachans with yellow bandanas for my army theme, but I chickened out.

Those are beautiful! I'm currently building up a Praetorian style regiment using Cadian bodies and Victoria mini heads, it works surprisingly well just using different heads on standard GW bodies. I really think they are missing a trick by not offering a range of different heads themselves. If the likes of Kromlech, Spellcrow, and Victoria can make a business out of it, surely there is money to be made right?

Seems like a simple way to breathe life into a fairly static range of models too.
