INTRO

Hi all,

I'm working on a competitive 40K Salamander Gladius Strike Force, after finding a paint scheme I'm in love with I want this list to be competitive for 1,500-1,850 Point tournaments depending on how it scales...while also being easy to expand to 2,000-3,000 points or higher as I get into more models. I also own 15 Sternguard whom did not make this list, but who can be rotated in if points go higher than 1850. Most of the models are from Betrayal at Calth, so this army can also serve as cross compatible with starting a 30K force, though I'm not really thinking too hard about that yet. Thanks for taking the time to read this.

CONCERNS/QUESTIONS:

My biggest concerns are as follows:

01. I'm not sure if I should field a Captain or a Chaplain to ensure I can legally field a Gladius Strike Force. The goal was to field free transports. I'm just not certain which would be best for this list out of the two IC's.

02. I'm not sure if an Apothecary is worth it for the Command Squad, or if another Meltagun would be best.

03. I've chosen Twin-Linked Heavy Bolters for the Razorbacks, as they have decent range, and are free. I know these aren't optimal, but will this provide enough Dakka in the long run? Should I think about Heavy Flamers instead?

04. I have 35 Points left to spend, but I'm as yet undecided on how to spend them.

Generally-speaking, take Boyz over Toyz. A Chaplain will usually work out cheaper than a kitted-out Captain, and will give any assault unit a bit of extra punch. That said, if you have no assault units whatsoever, a Captain is likely to be a better tank character.

Edit: actually, in a full Battle company, I think you have to take one of each.

You might! But Vulkan can take the place of a Captain/Chaplain for one of the Demi Companies...so he becomes defacto warlord due to that and his bonuses for the majority of troops in the force. I'm not sure if you have to take a chaplain if you take him though, or if you can choose either. Guess I'll try to look that up. One thing I keep toying with are power weapons for the Assault Marine SGT's to give them a bit more close combat oomph.

One hq has to be a captain the other has to be a chaplain. So Vulcan and a chappie works.

I must say, I'm a big fan of the Salamanders characters from the Badab War books. Have a look at Brayarth Ashmantle and Pellas Mir'san.

Not sure how useful placing MM Dec Squads in a Drop Pod will be. And starting them on the table with such a limited range. Seems like Las Cannons or Grav Guns would be better suited.

No earth shattering, thought provoking quote. I'm just someone who was introduced to 40K in the late 80's and it's become a lifelong hobby.
