I've been trying to use my Deathmarks more often, and I've been trying to come up with some different strategies for dealing with them. Let's say my opponent has a Tau Commander attached to a unit of Crisis Suits that he likes to keep in reserves. If I win the initiative, do I have to roll reserves for my Deathmarks on my turn, or could I leave them in Deep Strike Reserves to take advantage of my special rules when the Commander comes on? I didn't see anything in the rules stating that I had to roll for every unit in Reserves every turn, but I may have overlooked it.

P.S. I'm aware that Deathmarks may not be the most effective way to deal with Crisis Suits, but sometimes I like to do stupid things to throw my opponent off-balance.

Clearly stated under Arriving from Reserve' (pg. 135, main rulebook) with their use of the word 'must'.

Well, I imagine that depends on what you mean by the word 'try'.

Haha well said, there's often some very strange rules interpretations on here.

On topic - yes you have to roll for reserves, you can't choose not to. Although there are ways to try and manipulate whether your units arrive that turn or not e.g a Comms Relay

Yeup.

Of course, there are some exceptions and that is usually by having been given a set turn by which they arrive. In most of these, though, it is usually a Turn 1 or Turn 2 event, so the possibility of rolling for Reserves is negated by it being set to arrive by the time you would normally arrive.

I went home and re-read the Reserves section last night. Not sure how I missed the word must. I guess this another example of the game discouraging the use of tactics in favor of rolling the dice. Oh well. I'll just have to hope for Hyperlogical Strategst (or use Zandrekh/Imhotek as my Warlord).

IIRC you have HAD to roll since at least 4th, likely 3rd

Especially for 5th/6th ed style missions, being able to hold fast, scoring units off the board until late game is incredibly powerful. Msking it automatic makes it more so.

There's also a strategic warlord trait that lets you reroll reserves, if I recall.
