Well, she did openly support gun ownership by African Americans. It was seen as a way to ensure their freedom in the post slavery days. Hardly a stretch considering Tubman was the first woman to plan a US military action.

Were there a lot of pro-gun control democrats during this time period?

Was this before the 2nd amendment was personal ownership, or am I remembering wrong?

That didn't start getting ruled on in that fashion until roughly the 1970s so yeah this was way before that.

There were some gun control type laws which were part of the whole Jim Crow thing. One NC county for example required registering pistols with the county sheriff who could deny the registration. Another state (which one escapes me at the minute) mandated separate white and black militias, and stated no black militias could be formed if there were enough white members. I don't know how pervasive gun control measures were though, but there was at least some attempt in some localities.

A lot of gun control laws started to appear during Reconstruction and Jim Crow, with the intent of disarming black citizens.

I've seen this comment in various ways all over the interwebz. I was just wondering what right-wing website it started on?
It seems to have cropped up on a Guns.com article from April 20th and wandered from there. I know I started seeing this image on Facebook plenty:
Which is pretty amusing both for the lies of omissions present and that the woman portrayed isn't Harriet Tubman. Forging the narrative!
Thanks for the info. There were just way too many similarities for it to be organic to me.
I personally wish they would have picked someone that had a bigger impact on American history, but once the candidates were named a few months ago, it was pretty obvious which way it was gonna go.
