Hi guys, I've decided to pick up some chaos and I made a decision to play my army without troop transports. Does anyone know if/how this was possible? I was thinking using kharn bezerkers as troops en mass, perhaps with a daemon lord with wings as well. Is there any further advice to make this idea possible?

It will be EXTREMLY hard to win... unless your opponent is severely mentally handicapped (even then it won't be too easy)

Your Berserkers will die en masses as they march across the board. This should please Khorne.

You may want to try using the Khorne Daemonkin codex if this is your plan because at least you'll be getting Blood Tithe points to summon in more units and buff those who do live as your army gets slaughtered.

I like it.
You can field units of more than 10.

Use line of sight blocking terrain to advance.

Use distraction units like cultists as cannonfodder in front to get coversave.

Perhaps if you have a helcult formation of two cultist units and one helbrute to run in front and draw fire.

Inside your mind, corrupting the pathways

I use foot CSM (nothing other than codex: CSM) quite a lot. Mixture of 7 man CSM squads with a melta, 2 squads of MoN raptors with 2x meltas, a couple of squads of Plague Marines, couple of squads of 4x AC havocs, and a cheap lord. I try to keep all squads 7 men strong (because Pappa Nugle loves 7 ), but often run Havocs and raptors as 5 men to keep them cheap and let me field more units.

Stick the Havocs in a tall building somewhere, then run everything else through cover. Keep the raptors behind buildings etc so that they don't get blown away, then pop them out to toast vehicles/MC's.

Keep your meltas and champions at the back of squads so they die last, giving you more chance to kill valuable targets. You can generally put enough MSU's on the table to give people a headache wiping them all out while you go roung claming objectives with the raptors and keeping them with the plague marines. The aim of the game is to play to the objectives and run away if your unit looks like it is going to get wiped out to deny kill points.

Why would you want to handicap the codex even more?

Running CSM without transports is easy, just take two units of outflanking cultists then rock nothing else but maulerfiends, heldrakes, forgefiends, obliterators, and lord on a bike with a unit of spawn or other bikers

That said if you want to use any actual chaos marines.......best to grab some transports cause they can and will die off easily. Never let that marine profile trick you, their moral stinks and alot of things in this day and age rock ap3 or better.

I would sign this contract but I already ate the potato

When I run my KDK, I sometimes take regular CSM, but they always get a metal box. It does give them protection against small arms even if they can't charge the turn they disembark. I do the same with my Possessed. In general I would never run without transports for regular infantry. Bikes and jump infantry are speedy on their own and generally can't take transports anyway. Terminators don't need a transport, but that is because they can (and should) be deep striking.

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/7/24, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~16000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Imperial Knights: ~2300 | Leagues of Votann: ~1300 | Tyranids: ~3400 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000 | Kruleboyz: ~3500 | Lumineth Realm-Lords: ~700

You need 20 man blobs that are fearless (either because cult or lord gives them fearless). Also, a couple fearless cultist blobs help too to draw fire.
What I'm running @ 1850:
HQ-Bile (165)=165 165
HQ-Kharn “THE SLAYER”(160)=160 325

T1-CSM x 20 (270) +MG x 2(20)+MB(5)+Paxe(15)+17CCW(34)+MoK(40)+IoW(20)=404 729
T2-Cult x 22 CCW (98)+Flm x 2 (10) =108 837
T3-Cult x 23 (102)+AR x 21(21)+HSx2(10)=133 970

LoW-Chaos Knight Paladen(375)+MoK(50)+Dirge(5)=430 1400

F-Bale Turkey (170)=170 1570
F-Spawn x 5 (150)+MoN(30)=180 1750

Fort-Shield Gen (50)+ 2 x extra shield (50)=100 1850

It's a bit transport vehicle-esque, but would you consider fortifictions? Charging out of a bastion with an escape hatch lets you cover ground very fast, and the Dreadhold towers make for amazing looking chaos bastions.

The bastion idea is really cool to me.
What is the ranges and placement?

Chaz, how many points on your games?

From 1500-2000. Recently I've always made room for 3 Sorcerers.

Cool!
So a blob you can only hit on 6s and with 2-4 up coversave seems good.

Issue is it lacks oomph. Most dangerous thing becomes the Sorcerer's Psychic Shriek. I'm gonna switch them to Plague Marines for the next few games and see how that works out.

Perhaps some chaos chosen, with 4 plasmaguns taken in draznichts ravagers formation from CS, to reroll failed to hit.

I'd hold off making any purchases for Chaos until the new codex drops. Who knows whats in store for them!
