So I play in a fairly friendly meta, and I want to pick one up purely for painting as it looks like a blast. However, I know they have a reputation for being trash. So how truly bad is it?

Truly truly truly outrageously bad. For least worst results, get an MFF and maybe some burna boyz in there, but don't expect any results past garbage tier.
It can't shoot with BS2, can't assault with being, what, 30 points less than a WK (don't ever calculate how many times more durable a WK is for those 30 points. Just don't do it.) and it can't move with non-SH Walker rules.

"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"
"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"
"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"
"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!" |

Yeah. I remember playing one that managed to immobilize itself in the first movement phase. I remember it being so wide that it had a hard time trying to get past any terrain on a decently made table.

I'm expecting an Imperial Knights supplement dedicated to GW's loyalist apologetics. Codex: White Knights "In the grim dark future, everything is fine."
"The argument is that we have to do this or we will, bit by bit,
lose everything that we hold dear, everything that keeps the business going. Our crops will wither, our children will die piteous
deaths and the sun will be swept from the sky."

Went to a tournament last weekend, talking to one of the Ork players there, he mentioned that the Morkanaut was his MVP.
Turns out the KFF, and having a unit of 3 Meks, 2 Burnas inside makes the thing pretty survivable. Especially since most armies try to glance vehicles to death.
Combine that with the fact that most people are pre-occupied dealing with the fast elements of his army, and that the Burnas can hop out last turn to grab objectives, the things are pretty decent.
Decent for Orks mind you, but decent.
Also of note, this tournament did not allow Lords of War, so that may skew it too.

I've used one a lot vs a couple of easy going opponents and it's been fine. It also looks great if you go large on dredds and have 15 kanz, 4 deff dredds a stompa and a morka.

The only thing that makes me raise an eyebrow at the Nauts is that in canada they cost almost as much as the Stompa. And I'd much rather have a Stompa.

It just falls into the trap of many things in that point level. When to get to the 300pt level you start comparing yourself to the WK, and big problems come from that because the WK is the most underpriced thing in the history of 40k. So before, the 'nauts were in a bad spot, they were overpriced ($$ and points) for what you got, but now they are overshadowed by superheavies as well!
It may have lots of HP, but can be stopped dead in its tracks just like any other vehicle. If it had ramshackle it would be much more usable, but still in a rough spot due to it's cost.
I would put it right next to the decimator, maybe a little under.

It is a wonderful looking model, but its equivalents just do what it does so much better. It really needs BS bump and point drop.
It can be pretty fun in a game where you're opponent isn't spamming AP1 or Grav. If it was a superheavy it would be much better.
Looks great in a dreadmob.

So it sounds like for competitive play, the Gorkanaut is trash and mainly just a fun centerpiece to paint, but for casual games he's okay. Maybe I'll take him with my Kanz in a funsy list

Count it as a Renegade Knight (the Gorkanaut does have a big ass gatling cannon, a klaw and a carapace rocket launcher which are easy count-as for the Avenger Gatling Cannon, Thunderstrike Gauntlet and the Stormspear Rocket Pod).

Its a 300pt model that can move 6 inches, and then run up to 6 inches. It doesn't benefit from any Ork Rules such as Waaagh or Ere we go.
For survive-ability it has 13/13/12 which for an ork vehicle is fething amazing. Unfortunately thats about where it ends as far as defensive features. If you take the Morkanaut you can get a 5++ against shooting which is nice...ish. You can throw in a Elite squad (burnas) and equip them with 3 mekz and then with Grot Riggers you have 4 IWND rolls which is great. Unfortunately thats about it. It still suffers the same problems as every other walker in the game, slow and easy to kill with a melta shot.
For Dakka.....wow for 300pts you think you would get some serious dakka, but nope. The Morkanaut in my opinion is the better of the two. It comes with a KMB, a KMK, two Rokkitz, and 2 TL Big Shootas. Not bad per say but think about this. you have a 1/3 chance to hit with a KMB and a 1/6 chance to hurt yourself with it. Fail. the KMK is what makes the Morkanaut better, as the KMK is probably the best ranged weapon in the game for Orks (S8 AP2 Small Blast Gets hot). The Rokkitz would be ok if they were TL but since they aren't your only going to hit about 3-4 times total in a 6 turn game. And the big shootas? well I think the one thing the Ork codex has enough of us S5 shooting.
The Gorkanaut is even worse because it has the same weapons minus the Kustom Weapons and replaces it with a Burna (not bad necessarily) and a stupid gattling gun which looks cool but it fires 3D6 shots which = about 9-12 shots on average a turn. Do the BS2 math on that. thats 3-4 hits each turn, and I believe its only S6 so....not useful.
Both have Giant Klaws, special rules for them which make no sense but they are S10 AP1 swinging at initiative...of 2 or 3 whatever. But to actually use them you have to walk across the entire board and not die, I have only done this once.
Overall the Nauts were a great idea that GW fethed up. They were supposed to be the Orks answer to Knights and Wraith Knights, instead they are utter trash.
The only use a Naut has in a game is to draw fire like a MOFO because it does look scary, it just doesn't do anything beyond that.

It's a 1/12 chance to hurt itself, not 1/6.
Also of note, it's immune to S6 shooting, which is fairly prevalent in the game right now, so there's that.

It's afraid of melta, grav, strong melee, cheap tarpits, sm dreads...for just 300 pt. You're better off with a stompa for the same $ price.

I have used my gorkanaught in three games. One of those games the first pen it took immobilized it.
The only thing it did in that game was scare my opponent from going to a central objective. Which did gove me an extra card turn one.. but meh

I once faced two in a 2K game. AllI can say is that I am glad that my SM power gamer opponent was also involved (it was a 3-way) as he took the bulk of the other ones wrath. I just sat back and spent several turns planting shells in it until it eventually stopped.
I only just got it in time though - a turn more and it would have been on me. That thing was tough.

In a fun, non-competitive environment, the Morkanaut performs just fine in the right list (lots of vehicles, bikes, etc). Use it as an extended kustom forcefield (due to its base size), a mobile gun platform, and a CC threat should anything get too close. But, yes, everything everyone said is true. For the $, it would be better buying a Stompa. For the points, they are better spent elsewhere in most circumstances. It is fun to play, though, in the right list and against the right opponent...in the right setting.
