Hi guys,
I'm doing a footslogging/airbourne list for my guard, as I really like the idea of loads of cheap infantry and flyers screaming around.
But this means I have limited options for AT firepower, I already have lascannon HWT's but they die far too easily.

I have a vendetta, but other than that I have no idea how to give my poor guardsmen something to deal with nasty tanks.

does FW have any alternatives??

any ideas would be appreciated.

Best way to go IMO is to get some allied Eldar.

Or if you don't want to be a heretic, SM allies.

I speak as an IG and BT player. IG infantry units suck ass.

Tried and true melta vets,

out flanking scout sentinels with las cannons or auto cannons.

earthshakers for lighter vehicles.

single melta bombs in cc...... lel

honestly plenty of options, how many tanks are you expecting?

Not a lot if your not taking tanks..are you taking drop sentinels.
are you using forgeworld elysian ..(which is the army it sounds like you want) if so then you can really up the flyer count

yeah I have one squad of melta vets in a taurox, but they're in reserve, so there's no way to field them effectively without having them in a transport. melta bombs are a shout,
Does anyone know anything about rapier laser destroyers?

Sentinels seem to be a fairly popular idea to be fair, but are they any better than a LC HWT though? asking bc I have no experience with them

I have 2 vendettas, however now you mention it I think that if I stuffed my melta vets in a Valkyrie that would be a good idea, and its not a tank.

Since I've picked up the new IG formation "emperor's wrath" purely to let me run a Manticore and 2 Wyverns for no HS slots, I have been running a solo Rapier Laser Destroyer in each HS slot to great effect. It makes for awesome anti tank power in a durable, cheap platform great for dealing with what guard is pretty bad at dealing with: heavy vehicles and spammy spam transports.

"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"

"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"

"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"

"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!"

Yeah I've heard great things about the rapier can you tell me where you found the rules for it though? I'm very tempted to buy a few. good idea!

For my AT I use (apart from HWT's) -

Lascannon Tarantulas x3 w/ Camo Cloaks (That's cheap twin-linked BS3 Lascannons, only drawbacks being that they're immobile and have limited modes)

My Fortress of Redemption brings Krakstorm Missiles and the Icarus Lascannon.

Artillery helps as well - my particular favourite is the S10 AP1 Deathstrike.

I just found them on battlescribe.... they're quite simple.

Deathstrikes, lol such fun.
Tarantulas are a good idea, I like that one maybe a few of them and a rapier battery for good measure.
good ideas thanks

EDIT: does anyone know what happened to sabre platforms?? because theyre kinda in line with my thinking aswell, I cant find them anywhere though?

Personally I have had some success with a single HWS. I wouldn't spam more for the reason you mentioned, but it gives me a credible anti-tank threat on the table from turn one.

You can also put lascannon HWTs in your command squads. It's particularly good to do this with the company command squad because it means you get BS4 and access to carapace armour and camo nets.

I see that you agree with the idea of meltavets but you say you have them in a taurox in reserve. Why keep them in reserve to begin with?

TBH Guard tanks are probably not the best AT options anyway, other than Pask.

I have them in reserve because its the only tank in the list, therefore its very likely that it would just be blasted away as all of the opposing AT would have nothing else to shoot at. But now i'm leaning towards sticking them in a Valkyrie now.
I see your point about not spamming them, and I have a LC in my CCS

cheers for your ideas!

In response, I have Autocannon Sabre Defence Platforms too but I didn't include them in the AT list for a couple reasons. First of all, they're skyfire so they're not great at shooting ground targets and in the AT department an autocannon isn't very effective these days.

If you are looking for AT, why not the manticore ? Multiple S10 hits on a vehicle should be ok.
The AP4 doesn't matter when you take 2-3 hp off.

Forgeworld has the good artillery on carriages, especially the cheap earthshakers

Deep-striking Tempestus are good cheap melta delivery systems

Tempestus are pretty inefficient, points wise.

Really IG just do not do AT firepower these days except for suicide melta.

Which is what he meant by the Deep striking Scions. Two or three squads of 5 with 2 meltas tend to do the job pretty well.

The Vendetta is probably your best antitank flyer.

The Vulture comes in a close second IF your targets are vulnerable to S5 because dear holy god the dakka is ridiculous, but it'll bounce off too much without you getting to roll dice.

Rapiers are okay - artillery unit type makes them tough, but ultimately they're not that much shootier than a lascannon squad issued appropriate orders.

If you really, really want to prove a point, there's always the option of the marauder destroyer. 12 hellstrike missiles and three twin-linked autocannons is pretty damn shooty.

How about artillery batteries? Fits with the infantry theme, but with the firepower of a tank (oh and far more survivable than a tank too).

Forgeworld discontinued them, because they were really really good up until the point interceptor + skyfire meant you couldn't shoot the ground any more and then nobody bought them.

They're in the Imperial Armour Aeronautica if you still want to scratch build them - the Wyvern half hexagon platform with a leman russ exterminator cannon would do the trick quite nicely, and since practically nobody uses either part you can get them cheap.

yeah I might stick an earthshaker battery in there for larger games. does fit the theme though, cheers

8 hellstrikes, 3 TL AC, twin linked assault cannon turret and twin linked heavy bolter turret, + 6 s6 ap 4 bombs.

It weighs in excess of 5 kilos, and, sadly, isn't really worth it being armour 11.

Aw well that's a shame, its a really awesome model and looks like it could dish some serious damage, is it just because of the weight of the model that it isn't worth it? Just curious.

The new Death from the Skies book has some intesresting additions to aircraft. There's an attack pattern (a group of aircraft flying in formation, but not necessarily from the same squad/detachment) with 3 flyers that net you Tank Hunter; another with 4 flyers net you Tank Hunter AND Ignores Cover!

Sadly, the book has update rules regarding the Vendetta. But I'd say go with the Valkyrie profile, as they're the same aircraft, structure-wise (and I doubt your fellas wouldn't go with it as well)
