PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT:

I keep seeing an unusually large number of people who have no clue what their exchange rate is complaining about exchange rates and values of currency. In the same manner that some people are becoming a bit annoyed by the constant CSM ARE UNLOVED AND SCREWED BY GW threads I think it's a bit annoying to constantly hear peopleshouting about exchange rates without any clue whatsoever... Aussies...

It's easy to check Google for current rates. The AUD hasn't been anywhere near parity with the USD for at least a couple of years or more. It currently sits at 74 cents AUD to the dollar USD. I've been up on it for a while as I've been buying quite a bit from AU and was getting more when the exchange rate was 69 cents AUD to the dollar USD a couple of years ago.

Thank you for your attention. I hope this clears up a misconception that's been circulating for sometime.

Inside your mind, corrupting the pathways

And when exchange rates in any way match the price of goods in Australia and the blocking of retailers selling from one region into another in order for people to pay exactly the same price rather than at a vast mark-up is ended, I am sure people will stop complaining.

K, but exchange rates don't justify being a dick to half your playerbase.

Tactical Squad - GBP 25 / USD 40/ AUD 60

If the only factor in the pricing was exchange rate then it ought to be: GBP 25 / USD 36 / AUD 50

It's even worse when you consider sales tax - the UK price includes sales tax of 20%, the US price doesn't include sales tax and the aus price includes sales tax of 10%. So it ought to be GBP 25 / USD 30 / AUD 45

Clearly there is the cost of transportation and also local sales costs (which are higher in Australia) but these are not sufficient to account for the difference (assuming that GW is shipping 40' container loads and not wasting money with less efficient shipping methods like surface-air link).

The US prices don't include tax ? So American don't pay 40 when they buy a Tac squad ?
How many $ do you pay your Tac squad ?

Usually the local rate, iirc. So it could vary wildly

US sales tax is a local thing and generally is not included in the displayed price. Tac squads are $40 + sales tax as appropriate whereas the UK price is £21 + 20% sales tax (£25).

My point was that the UK price without sales tax is £21 so the US price without sales tax (if it was purely exchange rate based) would be $30, not $36 and the AUD price should be $41 + 10%.

Yes, I understand there's more to the pricing then simple exchange rates and I am also not without sympathy to our brothers across the way. I was only laying to rest this ridiculousness I've seen popping up rather frequently in regards to the AUD vs the USD. I don't remember who keeps throwing it around but it just won't go away for some reason and no one else has corrected it yet.

That and the poster keeps posting it in threads that have a tendency to get locked down...

You also didn't factor in time, as in when the exchange rate change (which is quite often). Back when the Canadian dollar was basically 95c to the USD's dollar, we still paid roughly 1/6th more for our miniatures (and then a 13% sales tax on top of that) despite our dollar being nearly the same. When our Dollar fell, GW actually RAISED prices on newer released models with the justification that our dollar is weaker. But there was no decrease in price when our dollar was stronger.

Also, in the past GW straight up increased the price of certain models. Plastic Bloodletters were 25 CAD on release, but are now 35 CAD with no increase in parts, and the 10 dollars was raised in the span of 2 years, not over the course of 10.

As for the australian case, this is not only a problem with GW, but with the gaming industry as well. It's mainly due to a lot of old laws that were set in place for a reason that no longer existed (namely old exchange rates) that no one ever bothered to go around revising.

Hell, I'm not that bothered by the Stormraven. Why? Because, as it stands right now, it's "limited use".When it's shoehorned in to the Codex: Space Marines, then yeah. I'll be irked.

People understand exchange rates. The simple fact is that exchange rates don't account for the discrepancies in GW's international pricing, and never have.

Moving on.
