Subject: GW North America 100th store opening celebration
Considering they celebrated their 50th Hobby Center in 2004...might have been 2005, but close enough...that's only an additional 50 net surviving stores in 10+ years. That seems like a lot of atrophy/failed stores.

Just some personal experience here, but in my area I've seen MANY GW locations open and close in record time over the past few years. There was a battle bunker that opened, then promptly shut. A very old location within a mall was closed down. Then another one opened up in a strip mall (it's still up), and now a second one has opened up in my area but rumor has it that one is closing as well (some regular dudes who hang out in there have told me this, came from the manager himself).
Perhaps there are obvious reasons why to more learned folk, but it seems to me like someone is really making mistakes somewhere at GWHQ - be it analyzing potential sales or selecting locations or what . . .

From what I've read on dakka over the years, mikhaila should shoulder some of the blame for that - his game store has seen off quite a few GW stores by all accounts

They closed a bunch and now they're celebrating open more?
That was my thought as well - it must be the 100th "active" store. I'm surprised though, I thought there were more than 100! Has there been in the past?
They had 100 stores in North America in May 2013. 87 in May 2014. 84 in May 2015.
Thanks for that! Does take the ring out of this a bit...

Why do they celebrate 100 stores now, if they had 100 of them running (albeit temporarily) already in 2013?
Might it be the 100th store *opened* in the US? As in, including those that have previously shut down?
Boom. Called it.
No, you didn't. If you had actually read the post, you would have seen this:
the opening of the 100th North AmericanGW store on 28 May
(emphasis mine)
I believe North America also includes some other minor countries, besides the United States.
They apparently didn't celebrate when the 100th store opened in the US, which I guess is good because it sounds like it didn't last long.
ya I always thought usa was central America or part of it was south america.
P.s. I know what north america is just annoyed by the igornace lol. It is getting to the point where you wonder what they teach kids at school lol. It is like someone from UK unaware they are not the only euro country.

It's "Celebrating our 100th store OPENING" Not, "our 100th store."

But every store has to be opened before it's running.
If they once had 100 stores previously, they they must have performed more than 100 openings a long time ago.

I searched the web and GW site. I found a 2003 article where they opened their 50th store in the United States. 20 more in 2004. The article went on to say they should have there 100th by 2005.
Business will come up with all kind of contrived reasons to "celebrate" or market particular dates. The bottom line is GW is attempting to drive traffic to their stores and this appears to be a convenient reason.
As for my area, GW's presence picked several years back when we had a total of 7 GW stores in the metro area, 3 of which were within 15 minutes or less of my home, with a couple of stores having six of more full size tables open 7 days a week typically from 10 AM to 10 PM. Now there are only two, both one man stores open effectively 32 hours a week, closed Monday and Tuesday. Both stores typically only have one full size table with the other full size table now typically taken up by the current board game offering and then their standard demo tables.
To compound it, when GW rapidly expanded in my area, it effectively killed the existing LGS's. A comic book store recently has been incresing their game offerings, but does not offer but a token selection of GW product catering primarily to CCG's, RPG's, board games, and X-wing.
Effectively this "event" is only serving to remind me of what has been lost and still absent in my area despite living in a metro area of over 4.5 million with 750,000 in a approximately 35 mile radius which is how close (far) the closest legitimate LGS is from where I live. I have been to towns with not even half as many people as my area of town yet still have multiple LGS's. What did they all have in common? No GW stores.

"Minor countries"? Typical American ignorance at least we won't have an orange muppet with half a dead cat as a hairpiece running the show in a year's time...
Anyway, on to this model. Will he be a special character? Are the Ultra bits sculpted on? I'd be interested in ripping his left arm off and putting a new one with a CF pad on there...

Second call for someone wanting to pick one of these Captains up and send it to me. I will cover shipping costs and reimburse for some effort. PM if interested!

No promises, but I'll see if I can get one or 2 of them. I work until 4 on that day, so if they sell out before then we're SOL...

Yeah, that is kinda what I am afraid of. I love collecting Captains, and as a Crimson Fists player, I feel like I should have more Power Fists. He might even make for a nice over-priced Sternguard Sergeant.

I don't work until 5 and I plan to be there when the store opens, so I should be able to grab one for you, if you want.
