So... Recon Armour is basically Scout Armour, right? There isn't a Heresy era version of Scout Armour from what I can tell. What does everyone do... just use the 40k era armour and scrape off the Aquilas? I'm playing Iron Warriors and I kind of like the idea of some crazy Marines scouting forward to radio back targets for the heavy guns.

Remember: Aquilas were also used as: Markings of someone (or the armour) having served in the unification of terra, and in the latter crusade as a mark of production as well. Hopefully FW will put something out, but untill then, scout armor should work fine

I'll never be able to repay CA for making GW realize that The Old World was a cash cow, left to die in a field.

True... but it seems to me that a couple of Iron Warriors Recon dudes wouldn't have participated in the unification of Terra or done anything worthy of being granted an Aquila. I could see one scout maybe, but not all 5.

I'll try sanding off the Aquila from a bolter Marine and see how that looks. Pretty sure I have some leftover somewhere.

well, there's nothing in the fluff that says recon marines MUST be new have the squad be some punks who took out an enemy warlord on terra or something

Also - the scouts dont have an aquilla on their chest if I remember right. The winged skull is the Imperialis, and was a different thing used by the army regiments a lot. I don't think it was restricted.

I believe it's been retcon'd that winged skull =/= Aquilla. So technically I don't think you need to remove them from the scouts. I personally would just to get them to match the no-bling look for 30k.

If the chests end up looking too barren, I would suggest plastic rivets from tinchy train group. the .06 will give you a more realistic looking rivet, well a .08 is good if you want the chunky "bounding stud" look. It well help add abit of detail to the chest after your sand down the winged skulls.

Thanks. Solid advice. My intention is to match the "unadorned" look of the standard 30k MkIV plate... maybe try to add some studs on a knee or shoulder pad. I'm also debating helmets. The only description I can find for scout/recon helmets is from a Space Wolves short story where the Marine comments that nobody wears them because the face is all glass and tends to break and cut your face.

Aquila means eagle, the winged skull has long been used in place of the eagle but has never been same. The winged skull has been called the Imperialis since 2nd edition, it was the loyalist campaign badge during the heresy:

Ok, if the Imperialis is indicative of the loyalists... then I DEFINITELY have to get rid of the off my dirty heretic Iron Warriors.

The Aquila that is restricted in 30K is the palatine Aquila, the double-headed eagle. Only Emperor's Children could rock it on their chests, although it appears on the occasional vehicle or shoulder pad.

The Palatine Aquila is a double-headed eagle, but it is NOT the same Aquila plastered on everything in 40k. That is the Imperial Aquila, and even in 30k, anyone could wear the Imperial Aquila.
See my post form almost exactly a year ago: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/648582.page#7833877

As for OP's question, the write up for them, as well as their models, do show power armor, not scout armor. Most likely just modified MkII or MkIV, with a very rare few using prototype MkVI.

Iron Warriors normally shun non-practical adornments, so it would be kinda weird to see Iron Warriors running around with big gaudy aquilas or winged skulls.

Hey, so I've converted two guys wearing recon armor. I run a recon squad lead by a vigilator that I really like. I use normal 40k scouts for the meat and potatoes of the squad, but I wanted the serg and the vigilator to look a little cooler. I'm trying to finish them up this week, and I'll post some better pics when I do, but here are my lousy cell phone WIP shots:

I was going for a sort of universal soldier meets roman legionnaire thing, which is exactly what 30k is all about in my head

The serg is just fantasy chaos marauder legs and torso covered in putty, with contemptor elbows for shoulders, an old kasrkin backpack, a marine head, and marine gauntlet hands on marauder arms.

The vigilator is marauder legs, fancy blood angel muscled power armor torso, maraduer arms with marine gauntlets, pauldrons made out of old fantasy elf shields, and a puttied cloak.

I feel both look pretty 4+ save-y, which looking a bit fancier and more distinctive than a 40k scout. If I had infinite time, I'd do a full squad like that, but I don't, so normal scouts for the rest of the squad work fine for me and everyone else I play with.
