Subject: Is Silver Tower worth buying for the actual game and not just the models?

The models are excellent, and it looks like the models that will be coming out in the near future will also be very good. But, how about the game itself. I really like how I can use a couple of characters from both my Stormcast and my Seraphon armies as heroes in Silver Tower. But, I honestly haven't had the time (and probably won't) to sit down and watch a full three hour playthrough video. So, I'm curious what you all think about the actual game. Is it worth the $150 for the game + models or is it mainly just the models that people want and will let the game fall to the wayside?
Thanks

I would say yes.
Similar to WQ in gameplay 'feel' but not the exact mechanics. In that you have a party of heroes, you move through the dungeon, fight stuff, try to kill the boss, complete mission, get renown, get loot, with some randomness. And, there's some character progression in going from game to game.
It's basically PVE with players alternating between controlling, rolling for the opposing Tzeentch forces. The latter is mostly driven by 'AI' type cards but someone still has to move them around, etc.
What I like about it is that it is PVE, that no two games are alike, there are a lot of heroes to choose from, then add character progression and different skills / loot that you can pick up.
Also, am hoping for expansions but I don't know anything about that.

OTOH, I have Imperial Knights : Renegade, and I am super mad that the 40k rules and the Renegade "game" rules were printed and bound together. If the 40k rules and the "game" rules were each a separate pamphlet, that would have been ideal.

Really you could watch about 20 min or less of a video of a how to play and youd be good.
I never played the original, before my time but everyone who I have shown the game to and had them play say while it is different in the character customization, they like it.
Fact is its not trying to be the Old Warhammer quest. This is a different take on it. It just keeps the dungeon delve-ness of the original.
the game is a lot of fun and I am defiantly in it for the long haul. There are another 4 mini expantions slated after the first hero box, then in Dec its slated to have a large box set that is Undead focused.
Spent a lot of time already today wondering how I could do my homebrew missions, such as to a orc fortress and use my Ironjaws, or have the heroes travel to Khornes domain.

It is a fast, violent coop dungeon crawl. It is not the origional, and doesn't try to be. I have moved away from gw this past year due to its rising costs. I rarely play 40k but atill play aos (would play more but the new chaos mounts are $$$). Due to the rising costs, I have started buying other coop board games and mini based games.
This game has brought me back to gw hardcore. The gameplay is great and I would buy it even if it used single mold minis from mantic. I would suggest it, especially since it is being supported with further expansions, minis, tiles, mission packs, etc. The great game will only get better.

It really depends on whether you like dungeon crawlers or not.
There are much better dungeon crawlers out there (that are cheaper, too).
About the only selling point this game has is the models - and even then, I don't rate them that highly. Just GW doing the "extravagant and overblown" just because modus.

I played this last night at the club for the first time and greatly enjoyed it.
We didn't find it nearly as dangerous as OldQuest and strolled through the first Trail, the second was more challenging (unless you are a Gryph-hound then you seem to die at every combat ). The end of Trail bosses were quickly dispatched and us Oldquest players were suspicious that there was some unpleasant turn to come which never materialised.
We played it pretty much straight from the box and didn't find the rulebook that straight forward - we were three rooms in before we found out how to gain treasure cards for example.
Another group we playing on the next table and they found it more challenging. On reflection I think we were lucky with encounter roles (plenty of scutlings and blue Horrors but nothing big or bad) they seemed to be under allot more pressure.
The Sigmar Priest's ability to damage every adversary in the room was a bit powerful. HE seemed to dispatch most of the bad guys on his own as his player was rolling well for action dice and Destiny as well.

I know a lot of people who are WAY more interested in Silver Tower than they are in Age of Sigmar.
The reviews I've seen put it very easily at the top of the GW board games we've seen recently.
Also, I would consider picking up a lot of Age of Sigmar models just to use them in the Silver Tower (the app has statlines for 37 Age of Sigmar heroes).
I honestly can see a lot of people picking it up once GW proves that they'll support it (release an expansion or two that isn't just App content).

Is it as good as Heroes Quest?
HQ had its own charm - I liked the secret doors, door tokens, cardboard furniture, chests etc it just seems like silver tower looks a bit empty in comparison? Just wondering if anyone can compare Heroes Quest vs Silver Tower?

All of the reviews I've found have compared it against the old Warhammer Quest (and sometimes they'll trace WQ's origins to Heroquest).
But I haven't seen any that compare it against current co-op dungeon crawlers (Descent, Undercity, Shadows of Brimstone, Journey, Super Dungeon Explore, Imperial Assault, Level 7, etc.).
I wonder what people would have to say if you asked them which dungeon crawler to buy rather than just "is this one good?"

I think that's a fair point. I don't think I've seen any reviews comparing it to any "modern" dungeon crawlers, other than passing mentions that the figures blow all the competition out of the water (which doesn't really need to be stated, as it's pretty self evident).
I think the question asked needs a qualifier attached too, as there could be any number of reasons you'd pick something over it. Surely at least as many reasons you'd pick it over something else. Some people only care about price, while for others it quantity of things included, for others it's quality, and for many it'd be a combination of all three. FWIW, I'm one of the "all three" persons, and I think that what you get for the cost of this game (high quality figs of an aesthetic that I enjoy and a fun game) it's very worth picking up.

My opinion of it is that the rules themselves put it squarely in the bottom tier vs its peers in dungeon crawling board games. It has decent replay, the board is very meh. It does have some good points too. Its easy, the models are great, it plays smoothly. Taken on its own merit and not compared to its peers, its probably worth it. You are really paying for the models though.

Like other recent GW board game releases, it's actually got a pretty solid rule set. If you consider the theme (exploring an evil chaos sorcerer's mind-tripping palace) it does that quite well. Lots of variety in party composition and 9 missions in a campaign, of sorts.

You can get it at a deep discount online to bring it more into the realm of "this is worth it just for the figures even if the game sucks" territory.

100% Yes if you have a small close group of friends that would be down for it. I'm very fortunate to still be good friends with the guys I grew up gaming with and we all still play.
As soon as quest was rumoured we were sold! After playing a couple of dungeons last weekend, it's definitely a hell of a lot of fun.
There is no set Quest master but a guy has to read the narrative as the tower evolves - this can be handled by one player or you can pass the book around - either way its a good laugh if you're all up for it!
goes great with beer and pizza too.
Enjoy!

Only played through the first trial so far(Hysh). But I found it to be a great game to play, if not a little unforgiving in the destiny phase. Nothing like having the Ogroid drop in on you in a narrow corridor, with 4 of his badass Tzaangor buddies. What's worse, the Ogroid goes from 9 wounds to 18 after becoming enraged. My brothers Darkoath Chieftain took a serious pummelling from him!
2 players can manage fairly well if you get decent scores in the destiny phase, but there was times where you struggled because the 5 dice ended up as a set of triples and doubles- not helpful! I can only imagine how it plays when there's 4 of you on the board.
