Subject: Help for Daemons against the Draigo-Star?
|
 |
Thrall Wizard of Tzeentch

Hey guys,
Long time since I've posted. Shame.
I just wanted to know, as a Daemon player, is there a reliable way to beat the Draigo-Star? I play mono-Tzeentch, and today a friend challenged any 1500pts monster mash with Grey Knights. I used Aetaos'rau'keres, Kairos Fateweaver and a weak Daemon Prince, only to find that he had fielded one ten-man paladin squad with four Psy Cannons, a banner, an Apothecary, Draigo and all armed with hammers, along with a further 5 base Paladins and a Stormraven. Fatey and the DP dealt with the two weaker units, but I could not beat the Deathstar. Psychic didn't work, so I charged them with Aetaos'rau'keres. We were locked in combat for 4 turns, but even with Stomp, Souleater and Riftbringer I was only able to kill 5 Paladins. I denied force the whole time, but as soon as they got it off I was buggered. The Daemon Lord died and the game was drawn. Is there any tactic for beating this Draigo-Star? Preferably mention Daemons, and moreover Tzeentch Daemons, but other comments are welcome. WHAT DID I DO WRONG!?

Did you fish for cursed earth? If just 1 of your dudes had cursed earth, your daemon lord would have had a re-rollable ++2 save.
I would have summoned troops and played to the objectives. Sounds like you could have easily won, as you had more models. Vector strike the flyer to death, and shoot his unit with the big boom staff on the gargantuan. Don't bother fighting it, you can out run it easily, and then his +500pt blob unit is stuck in a rut. Go kill the rest of his army and then stay in the air or out of range.

Basically you should win this match easy. Daemons eat greyknights for breakfast.

Agreed, but it really should be the other way around. I absolutely love the look on GK players faces when I beat them with Daemons. I even played a guy once who offered to play a diiferent army because "my Daemons would be at a disadvantage". His "pity" quickly turned to frustration as I began to table him.
As for Draigo-Star, yes, you need to ignore it until everything else in his army is dead. The only time I would ever charge it is if I had 2-3 MCs posed to assault and so close that none of them could fail the charge, Force if NOT active and Draigo is in a postion that he cannot have wounds allocated to him, nor could he challenge. Remember, if a character is not engaged (2" from a friendly model in combat) the cannot issue or accept challenges.
If you can pull that off, the Paladins become easy pickens. You should be able to wipe all of them on the charge before they can strike, then Draigo is the only model to worry about. Next round of combat, you challenge him with the model with Robes, and all your MCs pound him, while he can only put wounds on the 2++ rerollable MC.

We had no objectives, it was purge. Fateweaver failed to get Cursed Earth, the DP had no Mastery Levels and the Daemon Lord went for Biomancy. That went badly as he got Life Leech and Haemorrhage, the latter of which I swapped for Smite. The summoned horrors died too quick to use Psychic. So I ended up outnumbered most of the game. Oh, and Draigo kept 2+ Banishing the Daemon Lord.

Remember, Aetaos would deny his Banishing on a 4+ so save your dice for that.

Kairos has a D-weapon standard in his spell lore. Is there a reason you weren't able to fly around, popping Paladins off?

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

Probably because shooting Grey Knights with witchfire powers isn't particularly useful... They deny that power more easily than you can cast it if there's a GK Libby with a warding stave in the squad.

I think you should try Flying circus against GK, with the Death from sky supplement, they now have almost no AA defences unless they take fortifications. So just take the Inferno Tetra, Fateweaver, and Belakor, then take a few pink horrors and hide them behind cover for WC battery for summoning.
Just fly around and cast whatever witchfire at the GKs, I think you should have more than enough WC against GK to swing the psychic phase in your flavour ( unless theycombat squaded). Refuse combat by keeping in the air and just keep shooting, the maybe only exception is you can try charge the Nurgle DP with Balesword into his DK, with S7 (the formation bonus), rerolls to wound (due to poison), I8 and WS9, you will have to be really unlucky to lose this duel. All other daemonic FMC just swoop around and wreck those so called "Daemon hunter" with ease because they can't fight back........
Just remember to buy armor for as many DP as possible, Incase they get the cleansing flame go off, S5 2D6 auto hit is no joking even you are now T6, once you are grounded near Draigo and his Pally during his turn and arenot grimored, only Chaos Gods can save you........
