IG troops are NEVER fielded on their home planets where the regiments were raised for this reason.

The PDF forces serve that purpose for "home guard", and it is these who are most often going to be whom Imperial forces come up against in the case of insurrections/revolts.

Actually, that isn't entirely true when it comes to strategically important planets that may, or may not, be warzones.

See: Cadia and Armageddon.

It's true enough given the GENERAL nature of the question.

Of course, GW has probably retconned any fluff of value since 5th ed (last edition I played or cared about) so it's probably all AoS canon now.

they've not retconned anything major since 5th edition that I can think of.

I would think those are the exception rather than the rule and really in effect the forces that are stationed there are really just PDF by another name. Cadia, the stay at homes are PDF (if not in name). In Armageddon its more that they were recruiting straight into the warzone from the planet that WAS the warzone so thats more of a "current need" scenario.

Mordians would make this a grey area. Because their homeworld is gak the bath insane with chaos to begin with, there's little distinction between their PDF and IG.

Also, for fun times:
The Cyclops Demolition Vehicle is used by the Imperial Guard for battlefield demolition. Basically a small remote-controlled vehicle packed with explosives and guided towards a target from a distance, it is used for breaching enemy fortifications such as pillboxes and bunkers with devastating results.

However:

Mordian 201st Iron Guard Regiment - Hive Secundus crowd control - Vaust Hive World

While not quite repression in the way you are defining it, I believe there is a little anecdote in the current AM codex that goes along the lines of the Death Korps of Krieg setting up to respond to a rebellion in a hive city.

http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Siege_of_Derondii

The telling quote is:

"Krieg soldiers deployed in the towering mountains that overlook the primary Hive. Several artillery and siege companies begin to bombard the city spires and both rebels and inhabitants were mercilessly gunned down as they tred to break out from the besieged city. After five years of relentless shelling, the rebels offered their unconditional surrender to the Imperium; they were ignored, and the shelling continued for another five years. All signs of life in the hive ceased after just three, but the bombardment still continued for another two years."

The Mordian Iron Guard is a great example of a "home based" IG Regiment that, as part of their daily duty, is the brutal repression of the human population of the planet.

So, yeah, the IG gives zero feths about "civil liberties" and the like. If they're ordered to exterminate a human world, they are going to exterminate a human world.

I will agree with the previous two posters. As it has been said, the population would most likely be executed and you would have a new population imported to keep up production.

"There is a cancer eating at the Imperium. With each decade it advances deeper, leaving drained, dead worlds in its wake. This horror, this abomination, has thought and purpose that functions on an unimaginable, galactic scale and all we can do is try to stop the swarms of bioengineered monsters it unleashes upon us by instinct. We have given the horror a name to salve our fears; we call it the Tyranid race, but if is aware of us at all it must know us only as Prey."

Glad it got mentioned in the end. Iron Guard wouldn't think twice about orders to level an entire population even if it's their home planet. It would be just another day in the of the Mordian Iron Guard.

Iron Guard would do this, clearly. I like to imagine that the most disciplined and toughest regiments like them are really likely to execute orders to the letter (that is to say, kill everyone on sight if ordered). Less indoctrinated units could be more reluctant and have remores while doing it and very few would actually refuse under the death penalty the IG command would impose. I can very well think of internal rivalries and intercine incidents between these two types when they fight on the same front and are ordered to repress.
I don't know if there are any example of such problems in the fluff. I would emphasize on this for my dudes.

Almost any Guard would do it!!! They are all trained that way and have commissars pointing guns at their heads to make them do it.

Life (death) is cheap in the grimdark there is no morale high ground anymore where people go "oooo I dont want to do that" you do it or YOU are the one shot in the head.

We can see how easy it is even in todays "civilised" planet where whole groups can be made to do absolutely anything for a belief, in the Grimdark reglious fanatisicm is the norm. Its the ultimate dictatorship where you comply or die.

Yes, sure. I'm just saying some regiments would certainly be more willing to carry out repression operations than others. In the end, any regiment would do it, thanks to indoctrinement or Commissar pistols.

I think the bigger point I was trying to make is that in general in the grimdark, almost ANYONE would do it. Not becuase they had specific indoctrination or had someone stood over them but simple becuase thats what its like.

The Guard would have no problem doing that especially since they're as scared of their own commanders as they are the enemy.

Ultra-Ultramarines are a great idea.

In the novel Imperial Glory, it explains that after guard regiments force a world to see the emperors glorious light, they settle down and become the PDF force. It even goes on to tell you the fates of the rebellion leaders (guard and local) at the hands of the commissars . The Brimlock Dragoons then get shipped off world again and everyone is... not happy about this . its an interesting read to say the least. It covers the topics here and even shows how much people love to murder the Brimlocks. the ending is kinda of putting though. And! Ork eye view on things, like birth, death and WAAAAAGGGGGG!

BLOOD FOR THE PLEASURE PUSS... Just as planned.
