So, this is some imaginative and truly mind blowing writing here. What say you? Can you really get PTSD from firing a rifle, or is this just more agenda pushing?

Well, first of all the article says:
"The explosions — loud like a bomb — gave me a temporary form of PTSD. For at least an hour after firing the gun just a few times, I was anxious and irritable."
So before we just rush into the whole notion of PTSD, let's keep in mind what the writer actually said. When it is in the context of 'I was jittery for an hour or so', it loses a lot of its clickbait outrage-generation. And yeah, I figure being jittery after firing a loud gun, especially with no experience and with such firearms so closely connotated to recent massive crimes is pretty understandable.

Our understanding of mental illness is limited.
It is possible that this guy has been traumatized to the point of genuine, lasting effect.
Does this journalist have an agenda to push? Does he have a history that shows he may be in the pocket of the anti-gun agenda?
To sum up, maybe. We genuinely don't really have a good handle on why or how mental illness happens or how to treat it long term.

“Anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that 'my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge.'” |
