...huh, must have missread that. Welp, then yeah you can't have the destruction bonus with an all Ironjawz army.

Yes you can. All Ironjawz units also have the Destruction keyword.

I am planning on getting into AoS soon. I want to play Stormcasts. Here's my reasoning as an oldschool (~15 years ago) 40k player:

1) They look awesome; yes, they are obviously Fantasy Space Marines, but is that really a bad thing? They are big dudes in Roman-looking armor with big hammers/axes/swords.

2) The fluff is actually pretty cool. Contrived in parts (especially about how uber-kewlzors they are and how Sigmar is the bestest most powerful God-King evar), but just the fact they are reborn from heroes who died, forged for battle and shoot down on freaking lightning bolts is awesome.

3) The models, especially the dragon ones and the winged guys. They look like, as the fluff says, avenging angels. And that's awesome.

For me I am very picky. I like Roman legion type of things, and I like dragons and lightning/thunder/storms. I do like how the new Sylvaneth things look, but they look incredibly fiddly for a clumsy oaf like me and also I was never a big fan of any Elf in Warhammer other than Dark Elves (which was my original army some... almost 20 years ago?). I don't doubt the models look awesome though, although a bit too forest-y for me (which is the point, just not for me). Orks/Orruks whatever they're called now I never liked at all, not in looks, not in their parodying soccer hooligans and OI LADZ LETZ BASH SUM EADZ WAAAGH cockney accent talk, so I would not play them although I think I might have fun doing it (because I would talk like an Ork during the game, part of the fun!).

So for me it was hands down Stormcasts. The looks, the fluff, the models, and the fact they are the "stars" of the show.

Except none of them are batteline unless you have the Ironjawz Allegiance, apparently, and you can't be both destruction and Ironjawz

Well right now there's no point being Ironjawz beside the battleline units. but what I'm saying is if an entire are has the keyword for two allegiances, you can always choose either.

Yes, but the original point was about pure ironjawz, which you can only do with their alligience, dissalowing you from using the movement bonus from the destruction Alignment.

Holy Terra.

Sylvaneth. I have a nice sized WE army from WHFB that I play mixed with my HEs, and just recently purchased numerous tree lords at a flea market (along with six Warhawks and ten wardancers for 30 bucks total, I think the guy was just really tired) and now have inspiration to reprint them all.

I have been pondering this decision for a while now and Im honestly no closer than i was before although that said I am reconsidering Ironjawz because I came up with an awesome colour scheme for the Fyreslayers that would cross over well. So it comes down to what I want more, Awesome looking short stacks with insane beards and firey tempers or Awesome looking brutish orks with killy goodness....!

Swampmist wrote:On the orruks, rumor is that the next AoS release is Bonesplittaz (based on some key differences in the GH from their current names/warscrolls.) So if you go Orruks, your options are probably about to expand

Really ? If thats the case I'd be very interested to see what new models they come up with. I will admit I like the Savage Ork range ( Bar the shaman, that pose is just horrible) and the concept is awesome and leaves a lotta room to work with

usernamesareannoying wrote:wow, im surprised to see fyreslayers so low on the list.
they have some great models and some cool fluff.

I love stormcast but given your criteria I would have placed them last simply due to the resemblance to space marines.

orruks are great but I definitely agree on the weak showing for different models.

having said all of that, the syvaneth are definitely shaping up to be very cool.

I do think fyreslayers have lots of potential though and that's what I voted for.

I will admit from what I heard I expected the 'Slayers to be much higher on the list as well. I agree the Stormcast are very much the Marines of Sigmar and thats the biggest down side for them, the main attractions to them are the Stardrake ( ) and the Paladins they look awesome. The fact they have a large range is very enticing however I just keep reminding myself that they were one of the First, the rest will have their day

I have ironjawz. If you want a low Orc model count then they are your boys. Ran a 1k point game last weekend. 30 ardboyz 5 brutes the war chanter and a mega boss. Formation for 40 points is if you loose a ardboyz squad and your chanter is alive in hero phase you summon another 10man unit. Gives its nice unending hordes feel with elite models. They have great armor all at least 2 wounds and they punched in a khorne demon army's face. While o range options they are one of the best melee army's. And as a or player it's fun to finally have a low model count

A low-model count Orc army that is effective????? Oh man you just made it really hard to resist for me....

They only melee but they melee very well.

In the game I mentioned above, I was against 50 blood letters 6 skull crushers and the herald on the chariot. I lost 1 brute and 4 ardboyz that game while nearly killing all of his army by turn 3

Waaagh forever

That is brutal....I havent read any of the Daemon AOS warscrolls but i'd have imagined theyd be extremely choppy particularly the Khorne lists... very suprising to hear this. I will admit ive wanted to re-launch an Ork army ( had a 40k one way back ) but was put off by many of the same models, the Brutes however in particular ( and even the black Orks ...or ard boys ) are just awesome models.

Grimgold wrote:Stormcast was number 1 for me, as soon as I saw the prosecutors I knew they were on to something special. I've always wanted to do a daemons of order army, and the stormcast look nearly spot on for what was described in the 40k fluff. Half avenging angel, half knight in shining armor, 100% up in chaos's grill. My one concern was that I didn't know if I'd like painting the gold armor, but with almost half of my army painted I'm kind of in love with it now. The GW paints and instructions make it very easy to get great results even at a middling level of skill like I have. The smooth mirror like finish of Auric Gold Armor and vibrant blue of the heraldry are really quite striking together.

Thats awesome to hear. Ill admit I have never heard of the Daemons of Order ? Name sounds like a cool concept though. Are you converting up your Stormcast models or painting them another way to show it ?

Tailessine wrote:Uh, no more bonesplitterz please. Thats a slightly offensive bunch that should have been left with the brettonians qnd tomb kings imo

Im on the opposite side of the fence. I loved the Savage Ork Boyz and Savage Boar Boyz I thought they looked awesome... much more dynamic and Orky than the regular fantasy ork line

You sound just as picky as I do only you have your stuff in order more so Thats awesome the Stormcasts seem to tick every box you have asked for, well done.

Ill admit I absolutely freaking detest your common Bogan/Hooligan/whateverscum you have insociety that just seeks to be a crap person and cause grief for grief's sake, but the orks I always admired the Purity in their actions. Not fighting for any god ( yeah Gork and Mork exist , but its not their main focus) or for any particular ideals.... They just fight because Fighting is what they are made for , and that's what they'll do

And of course you must yell WAAAAGH ! Thats half the fun !

There are no restrictions on what units you take in what army in AoS. Just use your favourite units from each army. I think it's usually better to stick to one or two armies from a competitive standpoint for key words but really you could just get whatever you like.

Sylvaneth. Quite literally, that one image they showed at Warhammer World of Alarielle was enough to convince me to take a look at the army and I've never seriously collected fantasy and was very skeptical of AoS.

My choice is Stormcast! I think that while the models my not be the individually glorious all the time, having a well painted large army of stormcast looks incredible on table. You are also free to paint them is any color scheme that you can possibly think of.

Now, of course anybody can paint any models anyway they want, but fluff-wise it feels wrong to paint an Orruk anything but green, or give a Fyreslayer blue skin with a pink beard. But Stormcast armor can be painted any way that the heart desires. Each Stormhost has its own heraldry.

The are also very versatile for creating your own personal fluff and background for your army since Sigmar created many, many Stormhosts for all different tasks across all realms. Whereas, currently, Sylvaneth are more or less just vengeful trees trying to take back the Realm of Life. (Led by a killer model truth be told).

Now that I got the Sylvaneth Battletome it's clearly them. This is the richest book we've had lore-wise so far.

Is the book worth the price tag? Or is it like 40k codexes where you need it for the rules but wouldn't otherwise get it?

Haha thanks guys !

I'll admit I bought a box of Auric Hearthguard and painting them is a little bit of a challenge ( Completely different to anything i've done before ) , however I'll be sure to post up a photo of them when they are done !

I may be working on my daemons for a little while for now, but they will be done

Update :

I'm about half way through the squad of Auric Hearthguard ( Base colours, washes, and started layering ) and holy crap. I must say these have been some of the most painful models to paint. I'm going cross eyed painstakingly layering the skin alone

Hey guys, im about to drop some finished pictures of the unit in the Showcase thread. ( Hate doubling up on pics since they all get automatically added to my gallery) if you are interested

Be warned, I didnt use the traditional pallet of colours as they are on the box. I was going for an Underworld hades theme.

@ Sparkmage You may not like these since they are DEFINITELY not painted as they are meant to be

I ended up choosing Ironjawz. I never fully got into fantasy while it was still in 7th-8th ed and I was always interested about the Black Orcs/Big Uns alongside the night goblins of the army, but the closest you could make a BO centric army was with Grimgor. After AoS came in it became a lot easier to start playing and although playing Night Goblins was really cool with their synergy and normal orcs with their mobs, I was really drawn to the Ironjawz Big Mob with their efficiency given how they keep hitting hard even after they take losses. Also the fact that I play 40K Orks as well means that I wanted to try something more elite after having played Green Tide and the various mob variants of Ork armies.

So when Ironjawz came out with that big honkin' megaboss (the proper size for an Orc leader!) and a fantasy army solely focussed on the biggest and 'ardest armoured of the Orruks I was immediately taken in. So far I haven't regretted it a bit since the Brutes have been my all stars in being big game hunters with all my opponents learning to fear them even with big hitters like Alarielle and Karl Franz. 'Ardboyz act as the anvil and the rest is history.

Also regarding the concerns of Ironjaws' movement, you really should try running an Ironfist battalion to make up for it, it doesn't apply (sadly) to the Megaboss or other heroes but it makes up for their slow movement and if you're really cunning, you can still take it in a destruction army so you can double dip with rampaging destroyers for them to move 2D6" in the hero phase on top of everything else.

I know nothing about how any of these lists play, but from a purely aesthetic or painting/collecting point of view:

Stormcast - Individually, I like the look of these guys. As an army they look a bit monotonous to me (all same figures with different weapons). The Dracolith Guard are a nice exception, but I'm not a fan of the Star Drake model. I wouldn't mind picking up a few to paint, but I'm not really interested in collecting a whole army.

Ironjawz - Objectively I can acknowledge that these are some nice sculpts overall. I was never a real fan of Orcs though, and these do nothing to change my opinion so I pass on these.

Sylvaneth - My favorite of the "new mini" factions. The miniatures look coherent but different enough not to be boring. I also like the concept of the army. I'm really tempted to start a collection of these.

Fyreslayers - Meh. These do nothing for me at all. The miniatures are even worse than the Stormcast for all looking the same. The Magmadroth isn't bad looking, but one model isn't enough to carry the whole army for me.
