Subject: 8th edition like AoS?
|

I've heard this a few times and it got me thinking.
The idea is that 40k 8th edition will be a lot like AoS AND that part of what GW is doing with fantasy is testing the idea to see how it goes before the apply it to 40k.
What do you think and do you think this would be good or bad for 40k, if true?

bad very bad, with all the special rules for each variant of space marine, doing an AoS style rule system would homogenize the forces of the imperium

As much as part of me thinks the game couldn't get much worse, I think AoSing would be bad. Don't get me wrong, there are some upsides. Rules with models and simpler core rules are nice, but to get those positives while throwing everything else out is not a good trade off.

A huge cull of rules and bloat is needed. I've been playing since the age of 13 and I'm 40 now and I cannot get over how stuffed up and cumbersome it's become.
If they do what I'm thinking and don't do away with rules, then I welcome a stripped down game that can be played as pick up, friendly or tourney. I would imagine '3 ways to play' might well carry over. It seems the best way to give everyone what they want.

So how pissed off is everyone going to be when 8.0 not only doesn't show up until 2018 or later, but also turns out to be nothing like AoS? I keep seeing these threads pop up like at least twice daily.

Another "40k will become AOS" thread. You can set your watch by how often these pop up.
Look OP, these rumors are largely just click bait and come up every few weeks. I wouldn't give them much credence.

Bad. I would not play without points. It's the only part of 40k that is remotely balancing, although it sometimes does a bad job of it. Looking at you Riptides, Wraithknights, and free transport formations!

40k's not getting Age of Sigmar'd, if the rumors are to be believed. Shaken up, yes, simplified, maybe, and the timeline will move slightly forward, but that's all rumors are pointing to. The reputable ones, anyway.

Turning it into Age of Sigmar would be going a few steps too far. I'm very much on board for a serious simplification of the rules and culling of USRs but Age of Sigmar did rather more than that. If they went back to something as light and tight as the 5th edition rulebook I would be very happy.

I think it is evident that a lot of decisions have been made recently. FAQ's, boxed games that are price reductions in disguise, getting started boxes etc. I'm not saying that that is all because someone noticed an internet full of gripes one lunchtime, but it will have contributed.

Good! 40K is too space-marine centric already. What's the point of having 30-odd factions when half of them are space marines? I know gamers love having those little unique touches that make each army a special snowflake, but the rest of us who don't play marines just can't see the difference. You already look homogeneous and you play that way too. 40K would be better off if they folded all of the marine factions into one book and gave each one maybe a single special rule or character to distinguish it. Enough space furry werewolf dogsled legions and Twilight marines who are somehow objectively inferior to all other marine chapters.
Too bad Space Marines are the cash cow. GW will just keep piling on more and more chapters and special rules, characters and formations even as the quantity and caliber of their fluff gets progressively worse, sucking all the life and flavour out of the Marine faction as a whole.

Well, we got an AoS league going last month. I played two games so far with my Khorne Bloodbound and I really enjoyed it. With some scenarios to play it is not that bad as people think.
Atm I guess an AoSification of 40k will not happen. But it would not be the end of the world for me.

It would not surprise me at all to learn that people at very senior levels of GW and design team (although I don't think such a term really exists any more) level types were frequent readers of Dakka and other forums/FB pages.
And yes, AoS is getting a point system. 3 ways to play. What has GW pointed towards again and again, openness in gaming, openness in style. I just think that the 3 ways settles a lot of argument on how to play, it allows the cake and eat it. Personally, of those 3 ways, I think they're going to find 1 way gets played ALOT, but if allowing 2 other ways facilitates others getting what they want, groovy.
And I could absolutely see them taking that 3 ways to play and applying it to 40k. And if the points system is done well, I see no issue with it.
If it is a dramatic change though, I do worry a great deal about 30k playing catchup...

Honestly, I've been enjoying AoS so much lately at tournaments, and found it such as easy game to learn the rules for, that I'd probably be up for this. Playing 40k by comparison is much slower, involves way more arguments over rules, and overall feels super bloated. And I started with 40k, before moving to 8th Fantasy!
In general, I doubt that this will happen. But I definitely think that they will try to apply parts of the AoS 'lesson' to 40k, and condensing unit rules onto the unit itself is very likely to be part of their attempts to do so. USRs were a clever idea originally, but there are now so many of them, and so many faction/unit specific special rules, that they have defeated their own purpose. I can have a Space Marine on a Bike fire a Grav weapon, and have to look in four separate parts of two rulebooks to find out what the rules for that interaction is. My Necropolis Knights in Age of Sigmar have a single page of rules, and that more than adequately handles their complex statline and game options.

I like a lot of elements of AOS over the horrible mess that 40k has become.
Heroscape like Keywords and synergy is great.
Simple stat blocks - WHY have they not done decks of army cards I have no idea.
Now they are doing points.
lot of good stuff and would def give a AOS version of 40k a go.
