On a 2x2 there is no space for anything. Hell I don't know how you set up your armies. You should be on at least a 4x4 to make movement matter.
|
My Armies:
Orks about 15000-16000 mostly unpainted but slowly being worked on
Militarum Tempestus about 2000 points just built
Inquisition about 2000 points unpainted
Officio Assassinorum 570 unpainted

Its a small GW store so that's all that's available. There isn't a AoS playerbase at my local gaming club and frankly I'd probably get lynched if they ever found out I'd broke ranks over AoS; so that's not about to change anytime soon.
Edit: Sorry, it is a 4 by 4 board. I was counting board sections not feet.

Ok, then there you have your problem. The type of games you play, and the board you play on, give a distinct disadvantage since you are not able to utilize the strengths of your army. If you want to stand a chance, you need to play on a larger board and with other scenarios than a grindfest.
Regarding the Alarielle issue, the whole setup just disadvantaged you. Beginning in base contact is very good for him, and not good at all for you. In addition, he was adamant (and completely wrong) on the rules for Alarielle - you are allowed to heal yourself every turn with the Soul Amphorae every turn. In short, you played an unrealistic scenario that would never come up in a real game, that gave him advantages over you, and on top of that he interpreted the rules incorrectly and forced you to play in a way that was even worse for you. I don't think you can draw any conclusions whatsoever from the outcome, to be honest.

Agreed on both points. Sylvaneth are not a grind army, you need a scenario that enables you to use your movement and teleportation to actually stand a chance.
If this is not going to happen, how about looking at a different army? Ironjawz would be much more capable in the kind of game you are currently playing.

4x4 isn't bad for 1000 points actually. It is a little more difficult to avoid a head on battle though.

Well I don't know, he had more than 4 attacks and he was hitting on 3s. I can't really call him a liar and I am not going
to know the stats of an army I don't own.
Just out of curiosity do you not have a phone? You could easily pull up the rules for a model up off GW's site since the models are available to see there. Would make it easier to identify things as well as tell people what you are actually facing on the board.

also most of the scenarios are designed for a 6x4. Some of them would just be thrown off by the 4x4

Yeah, 4x4 is fine. I think the post originally said that they played 1000 points on 2x2. Hence all the comments on increasing the board size.

Further to what's already been said, Sylvaneth are a hit-and-run force.
If your opponent is trying to force a 'battleline', then summon wildwoods. Use shooting. Use AoEs. Jump around. Use revenants to pick off anything that gets too close to a board edge.
With a modicum of luck, a force with a treeman ancient can have 4 wildwoods on the board by the first movement phase, then treesong to get them where you want them.
Disrupt his line, pick him to pieces.
...you're going to need to make some terrain.

TFG shouldn't be getting games anyway. If you are willing to play with TFG then you deserve to have all citadel woods. Its easy enough to buy or cut a piece of mdf/hardboard in the same size or shape as the citadel wood and adding your own trees to it. I do believe there are companies out there that sell a "similar" size and shape.

I have gotten to the point where id rather just not play. I may be spoiled where I live there's tons of players. I understand your burden. Look for mdf boards the size of the citadel woods though. For a few $ each and another $20 at hobby lobby you can make plenty of them

The current issue is that the store manager has insisted that the TFG join a group game which nobodies happy about.

Roll out a 6x4 mat and play on the floor?
Why use Alarielle at 1000pts anyway? I see many issues not related to "is she worth the points" vs. "you are the punching bag for your group".
You have access to all the "rules" to every model in the game through the AoS app. You have a free copy of the game rules.

Honestly I think the player who fills up the board with Wyldwoods is a bit TFG... It's just not fun for the other player. A few Wyldwoods at key locations sure, but it can get excessive pretty easily.
Ultimately the point is that Sylvaneth have the tools for the job. Khorne hates hit penalties; utilize Dryads in Wyldwoods and stomping Treelords/Ancients to nerf his attacks.

I'd say it depends on what the wyldwood your using is like. If it's the same or close enough to the same size as a Citadel wood I'd call it TFG to complain. Personally I'd just demand they buy me the Citadel woods.
Edit: Oh I see what you did there. I'm using that. All kinds of joke can branch out from that.

We have run into this actually. For events, we have it written that forests block line of sight because you are not required to own citadel woods (which some disagree with because the thought process that if gw doesn't produce it then it shouldn't exist is actually more prevalent than people give credit to) and some people have made home made wooded sections full of trees to block line of sight like it used to do.
We have rules for hills, woods, rivers, swamps, and lakes (nothing major) but for some that chaffes because GW doesn't make any of these things save for citadel woods so some people think you shouldn't see any of those things on a table.

I doff my cap to the terrible punners present. You make us proud.
The way I see it, Wild woods aren't "terrain". They're a part of the Sylvaneth army you happen to be able to stand on.
There's a distinction in my mind between a cardboard flocked base and some pine trees on bases representing a group of trees, and the twisting, living terraformer of Ghyran.
That's why I'm not too worried about buying them because I see them as minis rather than terrain, and I'll be painting them to match my army.
It means you're also never going to run into the terrors of communal terrain collections being cleared out of woods before you get there.
