As iconic as Sir Killalot is, his weapons are a bit wimpy. Matilda is excellent , and Shunt is pretty neat, but Dead Metal's pincer-buzzsaw thing is just too cool - especially against anything with exposed tires.
Killalot's problem is it's built more like a competitor than a House Robot, ie its weaponry only really works in the context of intentionally and consistently attacking another robot, being stuck in the CPZ with usually only a couple of seconds at a time to interact with a competitor just doesn't give it enough time to bring its weapons into play. Matilda and Dead Metal, by contrast, either have weapons that are very immediate(the former with its flipper & spinner) or a way to pin down a competitor that enters the CPZ long enough to let it attack properly(the latter's big ol' claws and circular saw combo).
The drill-lance and claw arm on Killalot will only ever really be effective if a competitor gets trapped between it and the CPZ corner wall.

I feel like the House Robots have always been there to put on a good show rather than be effective; Sgt Bash had to be one of the most ineffective House Robots in the show, but when anything covered in fluff entered the arena, we were guaranteed some great entertainment, and possibly some toxic fumes
That being said, I do agree that Sir Killalot mostly struggles to out competitors, but I wouldn't like it if the House Robots were built exclusively to drop foolish competitors; while Matilda and Dead Metal can easily write off a robot with their weapons, you can see that they don't try hard enough to do that, or else they'd be taking away from the fight.

So happy this is back. I loved watching as a kid, it blew my mind.
Does anyone remember an early robot that was a large green sphere? Its weapon was a shoving shelf that would pop out, iirc.
My favourite was I think "Pussycat", which was insane to watch.
Though I did really like the later series non destructive contests for smaller and smaller robots.

That was an odd episode last night. Some really good battles, and Jonathan Pearce was on top form with the ridiculous commentary, but this whole "focusing more on the teams" aspect is exactly as cringe-inducing as I thought it might end up as - it's like a mix of daytime TV sob stories and wrestling smacktalk with overweight middle aged teachers and children :/

Yeah that was pretty boring; I couldn't really care less about the teams themselves unless they get into the finals - show us who they are then. Plus I was definitely smelling a hint of American TV when all the smack talk was going around. Still, at least the smack talkers got ripped apart one by one
Overall, a much better episode in terms of the fights than some of last weeks stuff - Foxic had to be one of the cockiest and useless teams ever featured in Robot Wars

That was an interesting show today wasn't it? Beast had a nice but seriously flawed design. I thought ironside was the best overall, but it is what it is. And Gabriel was an interesting design too.

Yeah I was actually pretty tilted by Gabriel, at first glance it looks like garbage but they can get a fair whack in with the arm and it seems infuriatingly difficult to get any real hits in on its vitals. Impressive, I'd love to see the same design built with a bigger budget and more advanced materials, if you could make the wheels more resilient I actually can't think how you could stop it.
I was actually pleased Pulsar got a second chance, it's pish when a cool design gets knocked out by one lucky blow early on.
Ironside was OK, but that self-righting mechanism was pretty rubbish really, and the judges made the right call in their bout vs Pulsar - they were out of it for well over the 10 seconds until Killalot turned it over, and even then the weapon was dead and they drove themselves into the pit right after they pushed Pulsar in, so they would have lost it on Damage and Control IMO.

Yeah, bit lucky to get through but them's the breaks.
Gabriel was a novel concept -- an improvement on similar designs.
It's weaponry was never too deadly though IMO and the control/steering was a bit.... optimistic ....... at times perhaps.
Been a good series though, the new format helps.
Who do you reckon the judges will pick as their wildcard entry then ?
I reckon either Thor or Gabriel.

Brutal final overall, worthy winners in the end.
Some proper damage done to the machines this series.
Next season/series hasn't been 100% confirmed yet, but things are optimistic.
Be intriguing to see what people can come up with.
Discs do the damage but do seem more prone to malfunction.

Well, the issues with Pulsar were drive rather than disc related, for the most part.
Carbide's problem was really the chassis design, it was far too easy for a wee bump or flip to cause the spun-up bar to hit the floor.
If someone could construct a spinner assembly that was contained inside the armour shell while it spun up and only protruded out on command to attack an opponent that could be a game changer. Providing you could design it so that it didn't chew up your own bot's innards if it took a wee knock
Still, it was nice to see the flippers given a run for their money this series - by the end of the show's previous run they had it far too easy.
Here's hoping the BBC commission a second(longer, ideally) season, but don't get too excited by that possibility, Auntie can be completely wonko when choosing shows.

My first thought with Carbide was some sort of clutch so if there were too much resistance to the bar (ie the floor or other similar immovable) there was something that allows some slippage, rather than come to a crashing and often terminal halt.
NB Clutch might not be the exact right term, but I'm no engineer.

War Is Coming! Series 9 kicks off on Sunday 5th March on BBC Two!
Plus, this series there’s a menacing new twist. Hitting the Arena Tyre no longer automatically lowers The Pit. It can also activate a mode called Rogue House Robot. This releases a House Robot to attack the competitors for a period of ten seconds, anywhere in the arena.

A coupled of thoughts:
Aftershock is brutal. This was best demonstrated when they tore Sabretooth and Terrorhurtz a new donkey-cave. I'd say that they're definitely a contender for winning the finals. But Jellyfish...you suck. Your robot is bad and you should feel bad. You look like a child's lego experiment.

I would have liked to see what damage sabertooth could have done to jellyfish if it had been in working condition - If that drum had been spinning, and they'd had mobility, I reckon there'd have been bits of jellyfish all over the arena, woodchipper-style.
I'm glad Aftershock won, they did what I consider an acceptable level of damage - Bits of robots torn off, 25000 pound hardware turned to scrap... Lovely
Also, what do we all think of the new "Rogue house robot" thing? Personally, I'm always happy to see the House Robots get involved, so I like the idea. Hoping for some Dead Metal involvement next episode.
Which reminds me - my top moment of the episode was when Matilda hurled... Nuts, I think it was? Right out of the ring, that was great fun to watch!
