Hey guys, I'm starting to paint the first of my Crimson Fists Librarians and was just wondering about Librarians typical colours and markings. Is the blue they wear essentially Ultramarines blue? Is the entirety of their armour this colour or would they keep Chapter-specific differences such as CF's red left hand? Furthermore, when are Librarians marked out and/ or where are they drawn from? Is it possible for a veteran Marine to be made a Librarian? Would they ONLY be drawn from the 1st Company? If they were, would they retain things like different coloured helmets that they may have had before they joined the Librarius?

Firstly, Librarians are singled out during selection process due to their Psychic abilities, only in rare situations would they join the rank and file (like the Blood Ravens who have Codicer-Sergeants and Epistolary-Captains and the CM is the Chief Libby).
Second, there is no exact specific shade of blue, but most of what I see suggests a dark shade of blue than UM standard armour. Further, its not a requirement to paint the armour blue, some Libbies give preference to Chapter Colours and sport a blue shoulder pad. In all honesty you could paint your Libby your normal CF colours and call it a day.
Librarians are normally marked with blue armour, but their insignia is a Skull with horns curving downward. They also usually have robes, books and staffs, or swords with swirly bits on the blade, as well as Psychic Hood on their backpplate.
As for chapter specific bits, like red hands for CF, it would depend on the Librarian and Chapter. Apothecaries for example wear white, but some given preference to chapter colours and have a white shoulder, similarly librarians might only have a blue shoulder and robes. Even techmarines might only sport the Mechanicus red on the shoulder. The only one who seems to be locked in are Chaplains, as I have never seen or read about a Chaplain who does not wear black with a skull helmet.

In the Crimson Fist book the War for Rynn's World, I do believe that it was noted that the Chief Librarian's armour was very similar to the normal armour worn by the Captains. He also sported two red gauntlets, as he was the Chief Librarian. I am not sure if non Chief Librarians would have two red gauntlets or one, so I'd say do as you like. All my Librarians have two red gauntlets, as I think HQs would all be veterans anyway. Hope this helps a bit!

I paint my crimson fist librarians Caledor Sky, with Kantor blue pauldrons. Whether they are veterans or not is up to you, it would be a neat way of distinguishing between mastery lvls at a glance though.

They used to be Enchanted Blue blended up to Ultramarines Blue, but so were all Ultramarines at the time.

I think the best way to represent mastery level is backbanners (or shoulder pads) with the old rank iconography as the main detail.

Librarian with Freaky Familiar

Best way IMO, to signify rank, just strap more bits and bobs to him, like seals, a book things like that.

To many unpainted models to count. |

So I've got Altdorf Guard Blue and Alaitoc Blue. GW's site shows Alaitoc as the darker colour but my eyes are showing me the opposite. Can anyone confirm one way or the other?

It should be, alaitoc is the first layer colour for Kantor blue, which is the darkest blue blue (rather than green blue like incubi and stegadon) in the range.
