Subject: Generals Handbook Battlereport. How do points work?

One thing i am definitely confused about is the section under "Pitched Battle Profiles" that talks about Points-Only Games and says in that case ignore Battleline/Leader restrictions, and that you can take any unit you want as long as you don't exceed the points limit.
So what is the difference between that and regular matched play, is what I don't understand. Wouldn't adhering to the points value itself mean you are using "Points-Only Games"?

I think it's called a "points only game" because you use the points but none of the other rules for a pitched battle. Like unit roles, the triumph table or even the scenarios. It seems quite popular in my store to ignore battleline restrictions.

Yeah, we mix and match parts of matched play and pitched battle in the GW store. If the player wants MP and we throw out 2,000 for example there's a floating 20-80 points up or down because the points don't always add up nice to a 100s round number. So for example this past weekend:
Opponent has list, there's a cool model he just painted, so go ahead and add that in. OK, I realize my list must change upon opening my case and discovering some non- GW models (we are in their store so be respectful) so change around, it's a bit over 2000 so we are close, within 100 if each other and are both cool with just starting to play. Confirm with opponent, b2b or m2m? how do we interpret damage (agreed!), use the three rules of 1, pick scenario, decide to use mysterious terrain, decide to use allegiance battle, command traits and artifacts. And all this over the course of 30-45 seconds and we're off

So far we've actually always agreed but, of course, either side will claim it's clearly in the rules or FAQ to run it their way (endless, pointless argument)
So, we decide do we roll to save vs. a wound that does D3 (or 2 or 3dmg) and if we fail, take D3 result OR does one hit, see D3 hits and save vs, any of these that wound?
I always ask, but no problems or disagreements yet.

Oh I see, I thought the rules were quite clear - damage is calculated after a failed save throw (so only one save throw per hit), but if you have an ability to save "wounds inflicted" that is rolled for after damage.
So a group of Vulkite Beserkers gets shot by a cannon. Cannon makes two attacks, both hit, both wound, Vulkite Beserkers get to make 2 saving throws, fail both, damage is calculated (1D6 for each successful attack) - say it generates a 7, Vulkite Beserkers get to roll 7 dice for their special Ward Save against "wounds inflicted".
Maybe I'll meet someone who interprets it differently - I'd likely just explain to them they are wrong though

I was watching a game at warhammer world on the open day where the players were doing saves after damage adjustment, so 8 hits * 2 damage = 16 saves. Interesting as apart from that they clearly knew the rules.
Didn't say anything, so long as they were enjoying themselves it wasn't important enough for a spectator to interfere.

But you know, especially here on Dakka those 30-45 seconds are really precious and YOU SHOULDN'T HAVE TO DO THIS.
So glad and refreshing to see someone doesn't mind and encourages this sort of thing. I really like this post. I get lambasted in the 40K section for even suggesting something like this lol.

@Ninth - yay! it's weird playing in a GW store but wonderful. Any "problems" resolve with a 4+ or just ask the guy. But the attitude is one where saltiness just won't work out well here. Even when we play outside there are still no problems. I like a big cinematic battle so when something lame or anticlimactic happens like in a hero duel I'd much rather see rerolling for a better bout than whiff and whiff like the pillow fight my battles can become cuz I roll so $hi++y
@Davor - I don't get the drama but whatever, everyone has their own ideas and game atmosphere. 40K just starts with a few clarifications and I just trust my opponents. You can tell when someone is taking advantage. I don't care for competitive 40K and I hope it gets simplified or at least far less cluttered in the near future. Cool models and battles are my priority.

I just use PPC since it has pretty tight balance. I use GHB for mega battles (4k+ points per side), for games with casual/newcomer players who aren't optimizing at all, and for making OP armies in situations where PPC is unavailable.

Project Points Cost, it's a fan comp that's been providing points for AoS for over a year now, so it has had a lot of time to playtest and revise things for balance (link in my sig if you're interested).
