Yeah, I was at the state legislature last night watching, and it was kind of disturbing. The republicans met behind closed doors, decided what they were going to do, and then immediately rushed through the vote without any debate. Cooper is going to be very limited in what he can do against a veto-proof majority, and the legislature is busy trying to remove as much of his power as possible before he even takes office. It probably comes down to just how much the republican party's lawyers think they can get away with.

On the good side, thanks to republican gerrymandering getting overturned by the courts, we have a special election coming up next year with new district boundaries. Hopefully that and some backlash over the republican party's blatant attempts to turn Raleigh into South Chicago will get rid of that majority.

That's honestly horrifying. I hope there isn't a single uncontested race in the state election next year (obviously uncontested Democrat is an exception). Even if literal random people off the street have to run, that would be better than the muppets we have now.

This is the problem when people get greedy for power, and can't accept when the lose. It's also the reason why I scoff when people say we should leave things to the states. As bad as the federal government can be at times, state governments are almost assured to be worse.

Thats how the Texas governor is. In Texas the Lt. Governor has more power. It was designed like that as our governor's were defacto appointed by the Feds for a few years after a short tiff that lasted about four years and Feds just held a grudge.

You're missing the irony in finding it "amazing" that someone as terrible as Ben Carson did as well as he did in the primaries when these are the same people (read: you and other Republicans) voted for someone as terrible as Donald Trump.

To get back to a more serious aspect of the general topic, it seems that Trump is having difficulty getting someone to play at his Inauguration Ball.

The statement that Sir Elton John was on the bill turned out to be another lie.

Except it isn't, because other states are free to do the same things. A strong federal government leaves less room for the states to gerrymander and manipulate the rules until one party gives itself power forever, since accomplishing the same exploits at the federal level requires you to get cooperation across a much larger group of competing interests and state borders can't be gerrymandered.

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices.

The power to take control of as much of the business of running the country as possible and minimize the damage state governments can do. It's hard to hurt people when the result of all your gerrymandering and vote rigging and rules changes is that your party has a veto-proof majority to decide what the state bird is going to be.

The audit identified old machines that were no longer performing their role in the audit effectively, and are now being replaced.

This guy has a really brain dead idea about how jurisprudence works.

Not really.

He's pining for the days where State's rights is a thing. Whereas today... we allow the Feds to trample them in many cases.

1) States Rights wasn't a thing until 1840 (the states didn't have rights in the Founder's conception, there were just things the Fed could do and everything else it couldn't)
2) Even then States Rights wasn't really a thing so much as an argument that started in the North about the expansion of Slavery in the territories that translated after 1867 into "bad fed govment rawr"
3) There will be a law whether the piece of paper says "no law" or not because the whole point of putting it on paper in the first place was because the Founders weren't dumb enough to think Congress would never try. And even then we've had to past protection laws anyway because the States keep trying.
4) The Supreme Court by definition is "supreme" and has full jurisdiction to rule on any law that comes in front of it
5) That whole thing basically reads out as a "damn government won't let me establish state sponsored religion to hell with the 14th" which is equally stupid because there is no good argument that its okay for the state legislature to trample my Civil Rights when the Federal government can't
