Got taken apart by one in a game last weekend. I've been looking through warscrolls, and I can't even find another unit in the game that is comparable stat wise. Does anything else have access to -3 rend multiple attacks? It's stat line reads like a bad fan codex. Even the 700 point beasties in the Grand Alliance Order book can't come close to it. Is it really just the grossest unit out there or am I missing something obvious?

He's also close to 400pts? The game is fairly consistent with what units can rend and their point costs.

He also forces you to halve the wounds done too, correct?

Greenskin Wyvern is another good unit for the point costs.

No madam, 40,000 is the year that this game is set in. Not how much it costs. Though you may have a point. - GW Fulchester

Correct. It's durable, mobile and deals damage like nothing I've seen. It's killable, we played three games and I killed it twice, but I had no army left to speak of by the time it died. I can't for the life of me understand how it's only 400 points.

Not much of a consolation when you play against someone that already owns one (or Sigmar forbid, more).

It's considered one of the best units in the game, its mobility and damage output are second to none. It can reliably take down any of the "god-heroes" in a blink.

However, even with halving wounds, it can go down pretty quickly with only a 4+ save and no immunity/blocker to MWs or Rending. MSU is good against is, as is massed range or sources of lots of MWs. It's also pretty expensive, so if you can force it to charge against chaff like Guard/Skeletons/Grots/Plaguebearers, it loses some of its usage.

Cheap, effective blocker units are key in this game. There was a Frontline article on it, and I agree 100%. If you don't have dudes to stand in front of your important stuff and be blockers, you have no chances of winning against some of the stronger stuff out there.

Now I'm curious to plug in tomb kings to my data analysis (refer to thread for that discussion) to see just where the necro sphinx ranks up.

How is it being OOP going to matter? It has points and until said otherwise, is thus a legal unit that players can expect to have to deal with.

That said, as TK are still my primary army, Necrosphinx tends to get a lot of attention, but the less overtly powerful items are the real things to be afraid of. Things like Skeleton Chariots are sooo receptive to stacking buffs from the various support options TK have that they will do more, from further away, and be just as durable as any Necrosphinx. If somone puts a big gribblie on the table, along with two units of six chariots, the monster is the distraction. :-p

Pretty sure the Celestant Prime has a -3 rend and 3 damage hammer, and clocks in at 360 points. Probably has less wounds than the sphinx though.

If you can't believe in yourself, believe in me! Believe in the Dakka who believes in you!

Less wounds, no halving incoming wounds, less attacks (same amount of big R-3, 3D attacks, but no secondary stuff like the Sphinx has), and can't run + charge (though has DS to do that for him).

Completely different model and role, but yeah it's one of the few R-3 weapons I can think of outside of R-2 plus Rend boosting artifact on characters.

Like many monsters, it is overpowered. I suggest using the 'ole negotiate with your opponent method since that is still very relevant. Matched Play is not a replacement for discussing things to ensure a balanced enough game, it is simply a guideline for doing so.

I try to view Warhammer as more of a toolbox with examples than fully complete games.
