I'm currently reading The Hunt for Vulkan and I'm really enjoying it.

Spoiler:
I've arrived at the part where they have just found Vulkan and Vulkan is contemplating the situation "Father, don't you see what is happening? Why do you do nothing?". To me this seems like Vulkan believes the Emperor to be alive, or am I reading it wrong?

Just before Vulkan jumps out of the Thunderhawk, he also says to Koorland "Fight well, Son of Dorn" "Your actions honour his name, and I will tell him so". The IF believe that Dorn is dead, so is Vulkan implying that he's actually still alive?

Perhaps, or perhaps Vulkan can speak to dead people.

Or he's crazy. That's always possible. Primarch's aren't famed for mental stability.

He also alludes to the end time in multiple references. He could just be deluded, but his perception seem to be farther reaching than most characters in the 40k universe. It could be he believes that he will see his brothers in the end times, even the ones resumed dead.

I always thought Dorn was still alive somewhere, given that all they found was a hand, and that most of the 'confirmed dead-kaput-finite-not-coming-back-this-eon' primarchs have bodies (Such as Guilliman).

Not really. Of the Primarchs, the only ones that are dead dead dead never returning with no suggestion of return are Ferrus Manus (decapped), Sanguinius (crushed by Horus), Kurze (Instant Death sword) and Horus (soul nuked, body destroyed and clones destroyed). Alpharius, no confirmed kill. Dorn, no body, Russ disappeared, Khan disappeared, Lion disappeared, Vulkan is perpetual but missing, Corax disappeared. Guilliman is "alive" but locked at moment of death, and soon as time restarts he's dead but there is even suggestion of possibly potential return to live.

Well he is also a perpetual, so it could be that when he "dies" and is reconstituting he could be in the warp able to speak to them for a brief moment before coming back to the physical realm.

To many unpainted models to count.

Depending on the source, the IF either found two of Dorn's Hands OR they found his entire skeleton.

If it's the former then no biggie, people lose hands more than they lose keys in this universe. If it's the latter then Dorn is pretty dead and will likely come back with Ferrus if he can come back at all.

Hell, I'm not that bothered by the Stormraven. Why? Because, as it stands right now, it's "limited use".When it's shoehorned in to the Codex: Space Marines, then yeah. I'll be irked.

But nobody in Imperium knows that so for Imperium he is missing.

And it's less surprising Vulkan believes Emperor is alive because he is. He's kept alive in the golden throne and it is possible to communicate with him.

Or he's crazy. That's always possible. Primarch's aren't famed for mental stability.

Curze did a number on him making him watch people with forks instead of arms unable to feed themselves and blinded so they couldn't feed each other, watching people being tortured in front of him, being killed over and over again, hearing voices of Ferrus telling him he failed. Yea hes out of it.

Of course The Emperor is alive. Who else is doing the Soul Binding!

Dorn? Probably hiding in solitude with the Custodians is my guess. Probably contemplating not being able to "save" his Father.

Unless he really does get killed in a Black Crusade. I'm sure BL will confirm it in one of their Novels. They're very good at giving us definitive answers to every question we have.

I think dorns dead, simply as the character is portrayed I don't believe he would just wander off and hide, all of the others sure, even vulkan, but dorn has always been the "fight to the last breath"

If they wanted him still alive and in hiding you know they would wipe it away with something about how the Emperor in a vision told him he needed to go do X and only return when Y happened.

Gone into hiding because of the shame of not being able to defend his father.

Or being captive, trapped in stasis, wounded but healing somewhere.

GW can write it out in n+1 ways.

They boarded the Sword of Sacrilege before it could flee and recovered what remained of Rogal Dorn. His engraved skeletal hand continues to be maintained in stasis, their holiest icon, and serves as a constant reminder of the commitment expected of a Space Marine.

I think the skeleton fluff is from Ian Watsons Space Marine book.

I'm sure the authors will clear it all up in upcoming novels!

They are nice like that. Giving all the answers we want and need so desperately.
