Looks great, nice and clean. What did you use for the metallic red colour?

Very striking.
Has that much coveted "Candy Apple Red" gloss look.
Makes for an easier paint as well?
Paint all of him gold and then pick out areas in the red, has a nice "depth" to it... an elegant choice.

Yep! The video I originally saw had them spraying the gold, then the red on top of that, then picking out the gold. I had already painted the gold and washed the model, so figured it was better to just do it the other way for now.

Some more pics after painting the staff and shading the red, while touching up the gold. Virtually finished except the tubing on the backpack and base. Can't wait to get the whole squad done.

Looks fantastic, love the way the red came out and it's a beautiful throwback to the legions original colours.

How did you do the dread base or the red on the 1ksons?

They both look amazing. I'm in awe

The base was an ordered one that I bought through someone on facebook. I airbrushed the lava then painted the rock. The red on the 1ksons is Tamiya clear red on top of a gold base. I started with Duncan's Warhammer TV videon on painting Thousand Sons. You prime black, then prime the gold. I painted the red on top of that after washing the gold with Reikland Fleshshade and then drybrushing with Sigmarite. Then after the red dries, I used Nuln Oil gloss.

Trying my hand at a Scarab Occult Sorcerer but this time airbrushing the red and picking out the gold (there's much less gold than on the Rubrics so this seems a better idea for the terminators) I'm really liking how the robes came out on this one. I do think I need to do a small nuln oil wash over top of the scarabs on the robes. It's kinda hard to see the lines on the scarabs plus I need to separate the scarab itself from the robe and add a bit of depth

I usually find metallics rather transparent so I apply a similar non-metal colour underneath first.
I find they have poor edge definition so you usually have to apply the washes hoping they sharpen up the detail.
My first army was Black Legion and I was losing my mind trying to get the metallics to stop looking muddy.
That is why painting everything metallic first and then using a transparent red was such a winner in my mind.

Your brush control is awesome BTW, all those little silver highlights really define that gold edging very well.

For the robes:
Did you start off with a blue-grey colour and then drybrush up into the white OR did you do the opposite of starting with white and then applying a really thin white-blue along the edges and folds?

For the Scarabs I would probably hit it with blue shade (green just to look pretty, blue hinting at a "magic" glow).
It might need a couple layers so it is well defined.
I would be afraid to muddy them up with too much black: they are very striking and subduing their look would be a shame.

I really cannot say much about this other than I am very happy to see this kind of painting in progress.

But what is up with not drilling the bolter holes?
Please excuse my detailed instructions on this... it is a problem I have...
Take a very sharp but reasonably blunt (very wide angle) tip like a nail and poke a crater into the middle. Keep poking until you are sure you have center. Then get an appropriately sized drill bit and drill (I use a "pin vice", not trusting a drill under power). Do the front first, then the side vents last.

Awesome reply! I'll go over your questions, starting with the bolter hole.

I honestly just didnt do it, it's easy enough to fix, but I tend to fixate on things which is why I paint my models in sections instead of just doing it like a factory (all of one color, then all of another, etc) which means it takes me longer, but I dont get burnt out. When I get to the guns, I'll drill them out and abaddon black covers more than enough for the inside of the gun barrel and won't rub off.

For the robes, I followed Duncan's method for his painting magnus video. I started out Celestra Grey with a couple coats, then Eshin Grey, washed around the gold with Guillaman Blue (or whatever it's called), then washed the creases with Nihilakh Oxide. Then a final highlight, in streaks, with White Scar. I used no drybrushing this time, but did a streak method where you take the tip of your brush and you follow the curve of the cloth. Sort of like how you paint Tyranid Chitin, in streaks. If you zoom in really as close as you can get, you'll see them.

I like the advice about the scarabs, and since I washed the recesses around the gold in Guillaman Blue, maybe I'll do that on the scarabs and around them too.

As for the red, I did the following:

- Chaos Black Primer (expensive but wow GW primer is worth it)
- Retributor Gold Primer
- Airbrushed Tamiya Clear Red (tricky but worth it)
- Washed the red in Nuln Oil Gloss (the stuff is perfect and doesn't stick outside of recesses)

That's it for the red. Totally worth it.

*EDIT: I think I have my Black Legion on the first page? I had a tutorial on how I did the gold over on Warseer. I'll see if I can find it for you. It was my best gold ever, but I've since forgotten off the top of my head how I did it.

*EDIT: Google is amazing. Took me about 30 seconds. Here you go I wish I had the other pics of this, the backside really shows the gold off really well, but Warseer lost all my pics...

"I used to use tin as a base coat. I found out that applying Vallejo Old Gold directly over the black keeps it from becoming overbearing. Then I give it a thin wash of sepia of your choice. Then after that dries, a thin wash of badab/nuln oil black. Once thats dry, I mix a 75/25 of old gold and boltgun metal for the highlights and there you have it. Also, make sure that after you do the highlights, give the black parts a lining of straight nuln oil/badab black. Make sure you use a thin brush and get it into the deep cracks between the gold and black plates. That adds more depth and makes the gold stick out while keeping it crisp and clean.

Oh and one more thing. What really makes it seem to be deep and rich is I give it two coats of Pledge Floor Care with Future finish. I give it a thick coat (goes on like water), wait 24 hours and give it another coat. It really adds depth to the model."

*EDIT!: SCORE!! Turns out I couldn't see them on warseer because the hosting method I used for the pics is blocked by my work place. So here they are! The trick is once you get the model done, use Future Floor Care and give it a couple coats with a few hours to dry. This stuff is magic and makes metallics really pop out

Nintura, thanks for the guide/explanation, good stuff.
I would not argue the working one model at a time.
I agree that sometimes the assembly line method of painting takes too long to "pay off".
Good looking results and not appearing to be too fussy in method.
Thanks!

Thanks all! Yeah, I was wanting to make the Sorcs obviously stand out in the army so whoever I'm playing against can easily identify them, but I was concerned the red would stand out too much against the blue. But after painting them, I like the idea far to much to care even if they did. Can't wait to finish the army.

Thanks! Yeah, I wanted the Sorcs to stand out on the battlefield and make it easier to count my Psyker die when needed, so I let them keep their pre-heresy colors And I've already gotten to fight the Wolves of Fenris at least once with them It went as you'd expect

Ive actually finished the Termie sorc, need to get an updated pic of him though.

I've changed the method I paint my 1k Sons. On the left was the same way Duncan did in his video. On the right, I switched to using Nuln Oil Gloss wash over the blue which makes the paint go on much smoother and makes the lighter blue really stand out.

Here's another picture side by side.

A Helbrute for my team. I tried a new method, streak painting on the armor and muscle tissue. I really like it a lot. Still have a long ways to go on this big boy as well as to put the rest of the piping on him.

Still not sure on the piping on how I want it done though.

Finally, Ahriman which I started this morning. Sorry for the potato quality picture.

Doing some more work (I switch from model to model a lot). Here are some pics of my Sorcerer in Terminator armor, not 100% happy with the flame (for deep striking with the Scarab Occult Termies) and a couple pics of my army so far. I have 5 more Terminators on the way. Anything in Purple/Magenta robes are HQ choices. White Robes are lesser characters. Sorry for the fuzzy pics, I need to get better lighting.

Wanted to work on ways to paint my Scarab Occult Terminators. Finally on my third try, came up with this method:

1. Prime the model black
2. Base Coat Thousand Sons Blue
3. Heavy Drybrush of Ahriman Blue
4. Wash the model in Druuchi Violet mixed with water 1:1
5. Heavy Drybrush of Ahriman Blue

And here is what you get:

I showed a partial completion to show what the purple looks like at this step. I then proceeded to knock the gold out:

1. Retributor Gold
2. Light, controlled wash of Reikland Flesh focusing away from the light, into corners
3. 1:1 mix of Retributor Gold and Stormhost Silver starting where the light hits the gold and working my way halfway to any darker areas
4: 1:2 mix of Retributor Gold and Stormhost Silver starting where the light hits the gold and working my way halfway to where step 3 stops.
5: I havent done this yet in the following pic, but edge highlighting in Stormhost silver all the sharpest part.

I'll hopefully finish this guy up tonight so I can use him as a reference to the rest.

Taking a quick break and getting back to my Salamanders with some Primaris for funsies. I do like painting these models as the larger size gives room for error and more customization. This pic shows my first attempt to my latest model at learning to Pre-shade a model before painting using an airbrush. I'm really liking my latest results and can't wait to see an entire army painted to look like it.
