I have been out of the 40k gaming universe for a while. Looking at some of the newer stuff it seems marines are on 30 or 32mm bases now. Is this the new standard for marines? Are termies still on 40mm? Dreads still on 60? Thanks in advance.

To my knowledge, the only bases that changed in 40k are the 28mm changing to 32mm for pretty much all units in power armor.

Strictly speaking the rule is 'use the bases your models were shipped with'. That said a lot of Space Marines (especially newer models) and Daemons look much better on the 32mm bases and they put Eldar characters on them enough that you'd probably be forgiven for putting Scourges or Swooping Hawks on them.

Is it still alright to use 25's though? I've got a lot of marines I don't want to rebase :-(

It's still fine to use the old bases. The rule book states to use the bases the models came with.

Today I received a squad of Palatine Blades by FW: they didn't have any 32mm base, only 25mm.
Did you buy FW's Space Marines recently ? If yes, what bases did they have ?

I purchased some Ashen Circle relatively recently (3-4 months ago). They came with 32mm

With the Deathwatch release bikes are moved away from the nice little bike base to a more oval base. You can see them if you look at the Deathwatch bikers.

Shame, I liked the old bike bases, both visually and tactically. Those seem large and awkward for something the shape/size of a bike. Less lean and mean. It will also make moving the squad around, bringing guns to bear, etc. more difficult.

As you might be able to glean from how I called them "the nice bike bases" I 100% agree with you. I like that they are flush with the bike. Feels clean and functional.

Circle bases for bikes? Not sure how I feel about that. Personally I hate how Thunder Cav look on their giant round bases with so much "dead space" around them. Bikes fit so well on their long bases and it gives them a more unique footprint on the board. Far too much 50mm and 60mm bases use these days IMO.

32mm is the new base size for Spess Mahreens as well as a few other infantry models like Necron Warriors. GW sometimes makes it sound like which size you use for the base is up to the user but the general concensus is to use the base that came with the kits. There is definitely zero pressure by GW or most tournaments to force people to rebase from 25mm to 32mm.

It's not actually a circle base, it's an oval base. If you have any AoS cavalry, it's on those bases.

Some of the Daemon Cav got rebased on ovals as well. Seekers (which used to be on the long bike base) are now on the small ovals and BloodCrushers that used to be on 60mm rounds are now on slightly bigger ovals.

Personally I like they way they look now, same with the Marine bikers. It always bothered me that so much of the model hung off the edge of the base, or in the case of the 'Crushers, so much base was wasted. I anticipate TWC to be rebased on the ovals soon.

GW has 4 or 5 sizes of oval base that make much more sense with certain models that are either long or wide. It looks like they want all models (40K, AoS, etc) to be on rounds or ovals and I approve. It's also nice that GW doesn't require you to rebase if you don't want to.

Yes, it is ok, but there is one small drawback. Using 32 MM bases helps you to deal with plates, because you will have more space between the models.

There's less chance of many getting hit, but more chance of something getting hit as it has to deviate further to completely clear the unit. It's a wash really.
