Hey Dakka,
as a 'enthusiastic' Crimson Slaughter player and lover of their Possessed and/or Formations, i can't help me but to think that some allies don't really work as good as
others with this, let's say very special (needs) army. As a very aggressive, assault focused army - at least is that my experience when it comes to the Slaughter - normal
chaos marines don't add much (asides that it is actually quite the same except 'fear' for the entire army and better possessed).
I tried quite a lot with this army and played them at least twice a week for the last month(s) and feel that the 'core units' for my specific army is now done i.e. the Brethren
of the Dark Covenant-Formation(Dark Apostle, Possessed & 5man CSM squad), Maulerfiend's, a Land Raider as transport for said formation, Spawn & cultists.
Aside of this core i tested only a few additions;
KDK Gorepack
Chaos Knight of Khorne
Cyclopia Cabal (which is illegal i think? Not quite sure if CS & BL can be in one army)
CSM-friends for Daemon-prince/named IC's (namely Khârn & Lucius)
Helbrute Mayhem Pack (before and after the errata)
Most of them are quite funny, especially the Mayhem pack. Even though Helbrutes are regarded as 'bad', i always had the feeling of them being quite good distractions, although
after the Errata these clumps of meat hit like freight-trains with broken brakes on the charge. The Gorepack is interesting to say at least but i have the feeling that it doesn't actually
add anything interesting to the army aside of the scout move and ablative wounds. Most of the army moves quite fast (1/3 chance the possessed are beasts) over the board, so
the bikes & Flesh Hounds fit really nice into this - but again, nothing to special.
The Knights is, who would've thought, a major distraction & enormous threat to 'most' opponents - it's fast, so it'll keep up with the rest. It can shoot and do, even on range, reliable
damage, it gets lots of bonus CC attacks (D3, which is brutal) but personally i actually feel bad to field Super-heavies & Gargantuan (same goes with flyers). I don't want to be
'That guy' if you know what i mean. All of my games are friendly, casual games - there are a handful of tournament players in my local meta; i don't want to play against their Wraithknights,
Gladius Strike forces & Necron shenanigans all the time - i'm glad they also have other stuff to play with. I doubt that CS is up to the task to kill either of those (although, my possessed
already ravaged some wraithknights in CC).
The Cabal, i'm not comfortable with them. I don't know how to utilize them correctly. Buff my units? Shriek around like a madman? Summoning is easier with a Possessed-Sorcerer
because of the Daemon USR, Divination is also possible with CS so it probably ends with Telepathy. On bikes they're surely fast enough & have jink, but aside from that. I'm probably
playing them, and bikes in general, really wrong. Same is true for CSM-friends; named IC's were almost always a major disappointment, only a Nurgle DP proved to be a valuable asset.
So, that's pretty much it what i've tested. I was thinking about Chaos Daemons though. They're, first and foremost, fluffy as can be. They could buff up a large proportion of my army with
their Artifacts. Giving a CS-Possessed unit, especially from the formation mentioned above, an even better Invulnerable safe. There's already a 1 in 3 chance of them becoming 3++ with
rending, adding a Grimoire of True Names would make them nigh unkillable (3+/4++ (with a chance of 2++) and FnP). Also, they could be taken as allies - so less 'useless' models and
they have lot's of awesome, large but not to large (i'm looking at you, Knight & Kytan) HQ choices. Taking something that's beefy but also a psyker for Cursed earth and summoning maybe.
The Kytan is the other thing - but it falls into the same niche as the Knight. So, probably a pass - But i will get one no matter what. The Model is just sick.
I've got no idea how to play Renegades & Heretics - fluffwise this is probably the way to go. Crimson Slaughter attracts myriads of mortal followers so a Renegade group is not to bad.
It probably adds range en masse, which isn't bad at all - maybe 'some' Demolisher Leman Russ', or some evil Medusa Artillery? Weaken the enemy before the Unholy Hammer hits.
Maybe you guys have some ideas, what about Orcs as allies or.. Necr.. No, no. No Soda Can soldiers.
