Personally, I'd avoid anything with the Ford badge.... As for what I'd actually suggest looking at, I like Subarus... Foresters are pretty nice, though the Outback is slightly larger. I'd also highly recommend the Toyota 4Runner, or if that's bit, maybe the Rav4 (they still make that one right?)
Add Honda's CRV, and Mazda's CX3 and CX5 to that mix.
Thanks guys. There is a Nissan Murano in my area that is decently affordable. The internet reviews for it are good, but I've never owned, nor know anyone who has owned a Nissan.

Is it at a Nissan dealership? Check the reviews on the dealership because my parents have owned one Nissan, I've owned one, and had coworkers who owned one, and every one I know who's dealt with a Nissan dealership in the US (You being in Canada may make a difference) has some horror stories or stories of less than legal practices going on.

My dad's van blew it's engine this week. The timing belt tensioner wasn't fitted properly by the sorry excuse of a mechanic who did its last service and the thing just literally fell off. With nothing giving it tension the belt failed and the pistons destroyed themselves. I had my car booked into this exact same garage for a full service tomorrow. I booked it in on Thursday and two hours later I got the news. Naturally I'm not going anywhere near them now.

No, it's used through a private seller. it's got less than 150k. What was your/ your parent's Nissan like? Reliable?

My parents had a 1996 Sentra... great little car, no problems that I can remember.
I owned an 09 Frontier. It was a pretty good truck... good traction in terrible conditions, no frills, no gimmicks. The reason I got rid of it was because of how much I was spending in fuel per month. The only problem I had with the truck was fairly easily traceable to a particular set of people, and not due to the truck itself (after I got it back from Germany, one of the battery leads had gone pear shaped due to over-tightening and thus, would occasionally lose its connection on the battery, thus resetting all my electronics)
Literally the thing that keeps me from looking at Nissan again whenever I'm in the market for a new ride, is dealing with Nissan dealerships.

Cars are my second hobby Makes wargaming look cheap lol.
Daily driver at the moment is an MG ZS which for those who don't know is basically a Honda civic shell with Type R suspension and a Land Rover 2.5 V6 thrown in, sounds nice, handles well and fairly rapid.
The fun car is a 1997 Mazda RX7 Type R. I have just finished swapping all the bushes, suspension arms, shocks and wheels. Over the Winter I will be putting a bigger intercooler in, radiator and swapping the ECU.
My previous cars:
TVR Tuscan Speed 6, weighed just over 1 ton and put out 400bhp it was stupidly fast. If we didn't need a bigger house I would still have it.
Toyota Supra Twin Turbo: This was my first performance car, it was running around 380bhp but due to its weight it really wasn't suited to the sort of driving I enjoy so it was sold for the TVR.....it also didn't help that my youth got the better of me and I put a silly body kit on it.
Before I went all Need for Speed.

I will admit that I think the Supra sans spoiler looks a bit odd, but the whole thing looks pretty good to me.

My insurance renewal was double what I'm currently paying. Clearly the insurers want me to move elsewhere.
I hope this doesn't force me to sell this car. Somebody here's got to be willing to insure me for a decent price. This is doubly frustrating because the accident that's put me here was the other side. Dozy old bat hit me whilst I'm parked at the lights.

Thanks dude,
It was a present from my Wife as she got some redundancy money and felt sad that I had to sell the TVR a few years ago.
Here are some pics of when we got it to where it is now.
I had just finished the suspension overhaul and slapped the new wheels on and found this old garage, perfect for some photos!
Then finally with the side steps on and ride height adjusted for better driving on our rubbish roads

I've got a blue 2015 Subaru Impreza. When my son was going to be born, it was time to get rid of the Miata and switch to something a little more family friendly. I love the car. It's quick, gets great mileage, has all the modern features (cell phone link, built in satallite radio, etc). I don't regret the change in vehicles one bit.
Well, except for when I wanna ride with the top down, which is no longer an option lol

Circumstances dictate I have a rather pedestrian 57 plate Vauxhall Vectra diesel, but my track record is much more interesting (if I do say so myself.)
When I was 25 (that being a watershed for insurance in the UK, both in terms of cost and actual availability of cover) I started with one of these..
3.0 V6, twin turbo, 4 wheel steer. My only regret was not getting a manual (they are exceedingly rare on a turbo) not only for driving reasons but the auto transmission failed and cost me a fortune to repair!
I then went onto one of these..
A 2.0l engine in a tiny car, with plastic body panels for weight distribution and a chassis tuned by an F1 team, this little thing could humiliate almost anything, especially on a twisty road. Sadly, I had an accident all too soon and wrote it off after a few months.
A few years later, I got hold of this..
The picture is of the actual car I owned. Well known by the owners club at the time, it had once been owned by an engineer and fettled to within an inch of its life, as well as the more obvious stuff like the wheels and the leather recaros. The 20v 5cyl 2.0l turbo engine was all original though, other than having most bits replaced by stainless steel alternatives, and it remains comfortably the quickest thing I've owned in a straight line (it didn't weigh much either!)
Thow in the odd Saab convertible and 4x4, and I've had quite the car history!
Stupid Vectra.

2010 Subaru Outback. Not a single problem yet after 85,000 miles. Handles windy snow-covered roads real well, which I need a car to do because of my work. Pretty pleased with the car, I think I'd consider another Subaru next time around.

I'm currently new car shopping for my wife. She's got her heart set on a Toyota RAV4. It looks pretty cool, Toyota is super reliable, but for some reason, every time I've been on a dealer lot looking at inventory and talking with salesmen I feel like I need a shower afterwards.
Me: "Here's some money."
Dealer: "Thanks, here's your depreciating asset, enjoy!"

First and only car, it had enough guts to get me out of trouble when i screwed up while learning to drive but didn't let me get too far past the triple digits to really, seriously endager my saftey too frequently.
Gets to 60 in 8.5s when on my own (~9.2s with stereo installed) and the ecotec engine has a pleasing 'buzzy' sound at the top end of the rev range - i'm one of those people who like to drive solo without music on, so i like that (and it).

I just traded up from a 2012 Dodge Challenger SXT SST+ (v6 with every option and same suspension as the R/T) that I purchased because I loved the car but wanted decent gas mileage, to a 2016 Dodge Challenger R/T.
The new one was my first actual new car with only 56 miles on it at purchase (I put 40 of them on it during the test drive) and its a very low optioned car with a 6 speed. I actually wanted to go with a low option car because I enjoy the simplicity, and being this was based off the Challengers of the 70's I think it brings me a little closer to the simplicity of those cars.
I don't have any pictures hosted on the internet so I cant tag one in the post but it is pitch black with metallic red-brown stripes (they look burgundy until the sun hits them then they go from a darker pink to a brilliant red).
Funny thing is, with how much harder I had to push the v6 in the old challenger to go, I get roughly the same mileage with the new v8 car...

For daily driving I have a 2008 Nissan Altima Coupe in crimson black I bought brand new. Its a simple v4 that gets me from A to B safely with great gas millage.
My beat around town car is a 1999 police Crown Victoria with a 4.6L V8 I had repainted solid black. It has some issues mainly electrical from having wires hanging out everywhere from where the police removed all their equipment. Its rusty and looks plain ugly but I love Crown Victorias and I cant think of a safer vehicle, they are built like tanks.
My "fun" car is a 2004 Mustang Mach 1. My Mach has the performance 4.6L V8 with an aluminum block and 4 valves per cylinder along with cold air intake and a Shaker Scoop. Weighing way less than my Crown this thing can really pick up and move! The 2003-2004 Mach 1s are pretty much 2001-2002 Mustang Cobras with a few tweaks to make them unique. Currently it is having some problems running at idle, giving me an engine code for lower then expected rpms. I'm pretty sure all I need to do is remove the throttle body and give it a good cleaning but I've been too lazy and its not giving me too many problems right now so I'll save that for a later date.

I'm trying to figure out if it's worth fixing my car or not. It needs a lot; suspension, brakes, tyres, window motor, under tray, timing belt. But these are all just parts lost to regular wear and tear. The things that really matter; the engine, clutch, gearbox body etc, are all good. And it's a beautiful car with low mileage for its age.
Yes I could go buy a new car for the same cost of the repairs, but I can guarantee that it won't be as nice as mine. Also, a new second hand car means new problems to deal with. At least with this one I know exactly where the car is.
I'm going to park it up and decide what to do.

More often than not I've found it better to just bite the expense and get your car fixed. Over here in America I've been noticing a huge decline in over all quality in newer vehicles. The old term "they don't make 'em like they used to" really shows these days. So many cars now days are stuffed full with electric everything making more and more things that can go wrong. Plus so many of these new cars are so cramped they make it impossible to work on them yourself. That's why I really don't want to ever get rid of my old 99 Crown Victoria, parts are cheap, not much can go wrong with it and everything is easy to get to. I'm pretty sure the body will fall apart on my Crown before it wont run anymore.
