Subject: Help with my bonehead modeling mistake. How do you remove overspray from vinyl flooring?

My gaming area is in my basement. I built a new gaming board upon a 4x8 piece of plywood. After I got everything done I needed to seal it. The problem was I'd never get it up the stairs without damaging it. So, I decided to open all the windows, place a box fan in one window as a vent, and used multiple cans of clear matte spray paint to seal everything. Not my brightest move. To make a long story short, mucho paint on the floor, and I mean ALL the floor. It's confined to the vinyl flooring. So far I've simply been scrubbing at it with a Scotchbrite pad and a solution of rubbing alcohol and nail polish remover. It's sort-of working. Eventually this will get everything off, but I have about 10 more hours of scrubbing at the rate I'm going.
Any ideas on how to speed up the recovery of the dumbest move of my married life? Preferably before the wife finds out.

You could try mineral spirits and see if that works (i'd try it in a tiny little corner to make sure it doesn't damage the vinyl flooring).

Ammonia would likely work. Be careful with the fumes though. Also, never, ever mix with bleach. That's mustard gas. I'm really surprised rubbing alcohol isn't working for you though.

Well, there may be a layer of spray glue in the mix too.

Whoops. You might also (probably what I would do) use gasoline. Of course, it goes without saying that extra caution should be taken in that case. Also, you might need to break out steel wool as opposed to the scotchbrite pad. Better cutting surfaces. One other possibility is to use grill cleaner.

If you want to fix it in a hurry and your budget allows, go to a big box hardware store or flooring store and get some laminate flooring (with the underlayment attached - it's much easier). It lays right on top of the vinyl and runs $2 - $3 per square foot. I mention this option because it's a no-brainer of a DIY project and you obviously have enough skills to build a table. Not only that, but unless you have to work around lots of weird corners 10 hours will be way more than enough time to install it. The end result will be a floor that looks much better than when you started and you'll have a happy wife.

Purple power. It comes right off.
Goes for couple of bucks at Walmart.
Website for reference. Strips models, it will clean easy on a floor.

At Games Workshop, we believe that how you behave does matter. We believe this so strongly that we have written it down in the Games Workshop Book. There is a section in the book where we talk about the values we expect all staff to demonstrate in their working lives. These values are Lawyers, Guns and Money. |

I found some good stuff at Walmart. It's called "Goof Off". It's specifically designed to dissolve adhesives. My god, spray a little on, wait 10 minutes, and wipe off with a paper towel. This could have saved me HOURS of scrubbing if I had known about it sooner.

This is an easy one. Simply spray the entire floor with the paint to match, and claim to your wife that it was always like that, it's the design of the tiles, and that was what you both liked about them when you bought them.

Goof Off and Super Clean would be my first two choices, but I haven't used either inside a room. Goof Off comes in different applications, so I guess start with the least volatile or whatever else is best for your situation. Super Clean is caustic and I've only used it when soaking mini's. Good luck!

Sticky stuff remover (stuff you use to kill sticky label residue) will kill the spray glue.
