I'm yet to see a horde army played in AoS with behemoth heavy lists seen instead. Whether that's good or bad isn't the point of this thread, I'm asking have people seen many horde lists with mass infantry? And if so how did they fare? How does the community think horde lists would do in competitive play?

As someone who is only just getting into this game I can't offer the most qualified opinion, but I am a longtime 40K'er and sometime Warmahorder. I am creating a horde army, and I can say the two things that worry me the most are:
1. Battleshock. With only 1 unit getting Inspiring Presence per turn, it is a concern.
2. Weapon reach. What is the point of having a mass of bodies if the back row has to stand around and cheer their buddies? I think this will alleviate the more turns they are in combat, as they can pile in, but I want to have my wave of gobbos come crashing over my enemy, not slowly whittle them down.

What army are you running horde with?
Ah right Moonclan, spears tend to help in that regard, as well as things that can mass shoot, fanatics also help thin elite numbers too.

Oh man, I haven't see many behemoth lists. I play a horde I guess, fyreslayers infantry 70-80 models plus some heroes and a magmadroth or two. I've played vs. goblins and skaven and it's fun. Not sure if that's what you mean. The horde armies by my definition here do just fine. Automatically Appended Next Post: If I can get (or anyone with Order) the trait to use two inspiring presences this makes large infantry units even better. Gonna have general hang back and try that tomorrow instead of kamekazying him

Units that have benefits based on size (daemon battleline, goblins, vulkite berserkers, etc) tend to be competitive with behemoths if they are taken at max size. This is because models within the unit are worth more as the unit gets bigger. To use Moonclan Grots as an example, the first 20 models are worth less than models 21-30, which are in turn worth less than models 31-60. For that unit specifically they also get nets for free, which is huge. Basically eBay/convert as many netters as you can since they are three times more powerful on the attack than a regular grot, for free!

When Clash was the dominant comp in the UK - mass infantry listed dominated the scene. Jack Armstrong won the Bristol Smash tournament with 120 Saurus Guard put on the table.
The GHB puts the scene somewhere between SCGT and Clash in terms of monsters vs infantry - I think both are viable currently, which is good.

Hordes are good but a lot of units seem to cap at 30 model units, add in weapon range and how there's some stuff out there that would easily automatically hit such a unit as well as the price of large units and I can kind of see why they wouldn't be seen around so much.
That being said I think larger units are probably still a little better than monsters as they don't lose effectiveness as quickly, but I can't really think of a lot of big units I'd like to take over a monster. I'd rather try to find a good sized unit that's still efficient with their size and ranges than max out the squad number. It's a good thing it feels balanced between the two enough to go either way depending on how you feel.

Horde armies now have potential slaying monsters as those old Hit and Wound charts are gone, cheerfully Clanrats have almost same value as Empire Knights :3

An often forget rule that benefits horde armies is that every 10 models in a unit gives +1 bravery. As a previous poster said, everything can hurt everything with the flat to hit and wound in AoS so when built right horde armies can be quite scary.

But need to also keep in mind that rule only applies to battleshock tests, cause there's a few things that play off of bravery around.

I play a part-horde list with Night Goblins. Depending on the game size, I tend to bring 40 NG spearmen with both banners, musician, boss, and five netters. I'm yet to play a game where they're completely taken out. The +2 to wound rolls (wounding on 2+) is nice when there is 30 or more in the unit.
I also run 15 Squig Hoppers, which I suppose is quite large compared to a lot of mounted units, and they really pack a punch. Other than that, a few Heroes, six River Trolls, six Fanatics, and Mangler Squigs.
I think the issue I have with pure horde armies is that the game slows right down and it becomes a table of tarpits. For me, the game is fast moving and exciting, and I think this is lost with horde armies quite easily. That's not to say they can't work, but I think the emphasis on harding hitting units/characters/monsters is much more eventful.

It also looks damn cool. We had almost 250 models on the table in today's narrative game and it was rewarding. Go horde armies!
